Objectives: Medical students represent a primary target for tobacco cessation training. This study assessed the prevalence of medical students' tobacco use, attitudes, clinical skills, and tobacco-related curricula in two countries, the US and Italy, with known baseline disparities in hopes of identifying potential corrective interventions. Methods: From September to December 2013, medical students enrolled at the University of Bologna and at Brown University were recruited via email to answer survey questions assessing the prevalence of medical students' tobacco use, attitudes and clinical skills related to patients' smoking, and elements of medical school curricula related to tobacco use. Results: Of the 449 medical students enrolled at Brown and the 1426 enrolled at Bologna, 174 Brown students (38.7%) and 527 Bologna students (36.9%) participated in this study. Italian students were more likely to smoke (29.5% vs. 6.1%; p<0.001) and less likely to receive smoking cessation training (9.4% vs. 80.3%; p<0.001) than their American counterparts, even though the majority of students in both countries desired smoking cessation training (98.6% at Brown, 85.4% at Bologna; p<0.001). Additionally, negative beliefs regarding tobacco usage, the absence of formal training in smoking cessation counseling, and a negative interest in receiving specific training on smoking cessation were associated with a higher risk of not investigating a patient's smoking status during a routine history and not offering tobacco cessation treatment to patients. Conclusions: Medical curricula on tobacco-related health hazards and on smoking cessation should be mandatory in order to reduce smoking among medical students, physicians, and patients, thereby improving tobacco-related global health.
Four hundred and thirty-five Chinese smokers who had attended the first smoking cessation clinic and received stage-matched individualized cessation counseling in Hong Kong during the period of August 2000 to January 2002 were successfully followed-up between February and August 2008. Some 38% of the participants (165/495) had stopped smoking during the 12-month follow-up after treatment. Participants with higher conscientiousness score (OR = 1.65, 95% CI: 1.09 - 2.48) and lower openness to experience score (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.45 - 0.92) showed a greater likelihood of quitting smoking after controlling the effect of daily cigarettes smoked and stage of readiness at baseline. The study suggests an important role of conscientiousness and openness to experience on long-term quitting behaviors following treatment, and provides useful information for the development of matched intervention for smoking cessation among Chinese smokers.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a smoking cessation program on processes of change, situational temptation, and decisional balance in male university student smokers. Method: Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, 78 male university students consisted of an experimental group (n=48) and a control group (n=30). A smoking cessation program was applied to the experimental group for a period of 6 months while no program was given to the control group. Study questionnaires were used to measure outcome variables before and after the program. Descriptive analysis, $\chi^2$-test, t-test, and ANCOVA were used with SPSS 18.0 program for data analysis. Results: After treatment with this program, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for processes of change (experiential and behavioral processes of change) than the control group. The experimental group also showed significantly lower scores for situational temptation (positive social, negative affect, and habit strength). Conclusion: The smoking cessation program may have positive effects on process of change and smoking temptation for male university student smokers.
Background: Prisoners represent a population group that is disadvantaged, socially deprived and underprivileged, needing particular attention with regard to provision of necessary oral health care, health promotion and motivation and tobacco cessation. Considering the situation in prisons, smoking and tobacco chewing are burning issues related to health deterioration and economic loss that seem to be overlooked by the public health sectors. Aim: To assess prisoners' perception of tobacco use and cessation in Chhatisgarh, India. Materials and Methods: A pre-tested, close ended questionnaire was administered in the form of extensive face to face interviews, to assess perceptions regarding tobacco use and cessation in the central jail of Durg District of Chhattisgarh state, India. Results: Prevalence of tobacco usage amongst the prisoners was found to be 61%. Some 27% reported smoking, 44% used tobacco in the chewable form and 29% indulged in consuming tobacco in both forms i.e. smoked as well as chewed. Results suggest several recommendations for policy relevance such as provision of a prison dentist, a tobacco cessation counseling program and targeted eradication of oral cancer by educating the prisoners. Conclusions: Health is a fundamental human "right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental well-being". This applies to prisoners just as it does to every other human being. The alarming findings in the study suggest the need for dental treatment facilities and tobacco cessation counseling in prisons.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of an auricular acupressure (AA) program for smoking cessation in high school students from 2015 to 2017. Methods: The study investigated 12 high school students who had been smokers. Subjects were treated for three years. Each program was composed of five AA treatments. Average daily smoking and adverse reactions were checked for one week before each procedure. The AA was administered weekly at the endocrine point, lung point, throat point, nasal fossae point, bronchial tube point, and mouth point. Results: The mean number of cigarettes smoked per day after each year of treatment significantly decreased from 5.33±3.58 to 3.54±2.08 in 2015 (p=0.046). However, it increased from 5.75±2.30 to 6.00±3.61 in 2017 (p=0.80). The number of cigarettes smoked before treatment was found to be higher than the number of cigarettes after treatment in the previous year. No significant results were obtained from analysis of the change in the amount of smoking within each year. Conclusion: Social influence, such as the subject's academic stress and peer relationships, may have been a major factor in the change in the amount of smoking. Although the AA did not show a strong effect in smoking cessation, it appears to have value as a supplementary means of stopping smoking.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of motivational counseling program for improving knowledge and attitude of smoking cessation and smoking cessation behaviors of middle school students. The research design was nonequivalent control group pre- and post-test design. The subjects were 42 third grade students of M and D middle school in G city (experiment group 21, control group 21). The treatment of this study, motivational counseling program was modified by author based on Lim(2010), developed by Valasquez(2001). The effects of this study were evaluated with the scales for smoking knowledge, smoking attitude, daily cigarette consumption, and the scales of stage of change. The data were analyzed with percentage and t-test using SPSS 21.0. The results of this study were summarized as follows: The experiment group who participated in the motivation counseling program had higher scores in knowledge(t=8.99, p=.000) and attitude(t=2.77, p=.008) of smoking cessation and stage of change(t=3.85, p=.000), and lesser daily cigarette consumption(t=-3.68, p=.001) than those of the control group. Based on these results, it was verified that the motivational counseling program may be effective in improving smoking cessation of middle school students. It is recommended that the motivational counseling program will be used as useful psychiatric nursing intervention for smoking prevention, smoking cessation, and mental health promotion for middle school students.
Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a five-week auricular acupressure (AA) program on smoking cessation for male high school students. Methods: From May 27 2015 to November 18 2015, this study investigated 66 high school students who had been smoking. More than four sessions of AA were given to participants, and surveys were conducted before each treatment. Once a week, the AA was administered at the endocrine point, lung point, throat point, nasal fossae point, bronchial tube point, and mouth point.Result: Thirty-four (51.5%) students reduced their number of cigarettes smoked per day, while 17 (25.7%) students complained of side effects. Conclusions: Results show that AA is generally effective, and side effects occur less often than with anti-smoking acupuncture. So AA could be preferred on smoking cessation for students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of public health center smoking cessation counseling program using the transtheoretical model on the process of change, smoking temptation, decisional balance and stage change transition. Methods: A nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used for this study. The study population was 115 adult smokers. The counseling program was administered to the experimental group and a smoking cessation program from the Korean Ministry of Health & Welfare was administered to the control group. Descriptive analysis, $\chi^2-test$, t-test, and ANCOVA were used with the SPSS 12.0 program to analyze the data. Results: After treatment with this program, the experimental group showed significantly higher scores for process of change (t=4.148, p<.001), smoking temptation (t=-2.988, p=.003), and stage change transition ($\chi^2=5.871$, p=.031) compared to the control group. Experimental group members also showed significantly lower score for Pros of smoking (t=-3.151, p=.002). Conclusion: The findings indicate that this program could have positive effect on process of change, smoking temptation, decisional balance and stage transition for adult smokers. Based on these findings, the authors suggest additional counseling program focusing on smokers in specific stages.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of auricular acupressure therapy on smoking cessation for female university students. Method. The research design was a nonequivalent control group nonsynchronized design. Subjects were 60 (Experimental: 30, Control: 30) smoking female university students. The measuring tools were the number of cigarettes smoked per day, dependency on nicotine, and need for smoking. Auricular acupressure therapy, an experimental treatment, was applied 3 times a day, 2 days a week, for 2 weeks. Data was collected from March 2006 to October 2006. Data was analyzed using the SPSS PC+ 12 version. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, $x^2$-test, and Fisher's exact test were used for each aim of this study. Result: The number of cigarettes smoked per day (t=8.63, p=.00), dependency on nicotine (t=18.15, p=.00), and need for smoking (t=14.23, p=.00) significantly decreased in the experimental group by application of auricular acupressure therapy. Conclusion: Auricular acupressure therapy can be a better effective primary nursing intervention on smoking cessation for female university students shown through studies of repetition.
Purpose: This study is to examine the effect of auricular acupressure therapy on smoking cessation for male adult in rural areas. Method: Research design was nonequivalent control pretest-posttest design. The samples were 90 male adults(Experimental: 40, Control: 40) in a community. Measures were the number of cigarette smoking per day, dependency on nicotine, and need for smoking. Auricular acupressure therapy, experimental treatment was applied for 2 weeks, 2 times/week, 3 day/time. Data were collected from June 2005 to December 2005. Data were analyzed using SPSS PC+ 12 version. Descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ${\chi}^2-test$, were used for each aim of this study. Results: The number of cigarette smoking per day (t= 13.230, p=.000), dependency on nicotine (t=-29.743, p=.000), and need for smoking (t=-19.799, p=.000) were significantly decreased in the experimental group by application of the auricular acupressure therapy. Conclusion: Auricular Acupressure Therapy can be a better effective primary nursing intervention on smoking cessation for male adults in rural areas through reverification by a study of repetition.
