  • High temperature electrical conductivity of Aluminum Nitride (AlN) ceramics sintered with $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid has been investigated with respect to various sintering conditions and MgO-dopant. When magnesium oxide is added as a dopant, liquid glass-film and crystalline phases such as spinel, perovskite are formed as second phases, which affects their electrical properties. According to high temperature impedance analysis, MgO doping leads to reduction of activation energy and electrical resistivity due to AlN grains. On the other hand, the activation energy and electrical resistivity due to grain boundary were increased by MgO doping. This is a result of the formation of liquid glass film in the grain boundary, which contains Mg ions, or the elevation of schottky barrier due to the precipitation of Mg in the grain boundary. For the annealed sample of MgO doped AlN, the electrical resistivity and activation energy were increased further compared to MgO doped AlN, which results from diffusion of Mg in the grains from grain boundary as shown in the microstructure.

  • This paper presents the fabrication of ceramic insulation layer on metallic heat spreading substrate, i.e. an insulated metal substrate, for planar type heater. Aluminum alloy substrate is preferred as a heat spreading panel due to its high thermal conductivity, machinability and the light weight for the planar type heater which is used at the thermal treatment process of semiconductor device and display component manufacturing. An insulating layer made of ceramic dielectric film that is stable at high temperature has to be coated on the metallic substrate to form a heating element circuit. Two technical issues are raised at the forming of ceramic insulation layer on the metallic substrate; one is delamination and crack between metal and ceramic interface due to their large differences in thermal expansion coefficient, and the other is electrical breakdown due to intrinsic weakness in dielectric or structural defects. In this work, to overcome those problem, selected metal oxide buffer layers were introduced between metal and ceramic layer for mechanical matching, enhancing the adhesion strength, and multi-coating method was applied to improve the film quality and the dielectric breakdown property.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of different self-adhesive resin cements and their shear bond strength on dentin and lithium disilicate ceramic and compare these result with that of conventional resin cement. For this study, four self-adhesive resin cements (Rely-X Unicem, Embrace Wetbond, Mexcem, BisCem), one conventional resin cement (Rely-X ARC) and one restorative resin composite (Z-350) were used. In order to evaluate the physical properties, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and flexural strength were measured. To evaluate the shear bond strength on dentin, each cement was adhered to buccal dentinal surface of extracted human lower molars. Dentin bonding agent was applied after acid etching for groups of Rely-X ARC and Z-350. In order to evaluate the shear bond strength on ceramic, lithium disilicate glass ceramic (IPS Empress 2) disks were prepared. Only Rely-X ARC and Z-350 groups were pretreated with hydrofluoric acid and silane. And then each resin cement was adhered to ceramic surface in 2 mm diameter. Physical properties and shear bond strengths were measured using a universal testing machine. Results were as follows 1. BisCem showed the lowest compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and flexural strength. (P<0.05) 2. Self-adhesive resin cements showed significantly lower shear bond strength on the dentin and lithium disilicate ceramic than Rely-X ARC and Z-350 (P<0.05) In conclusion, self-adhesive resin cements represent the lower physical properties and shear bond strength than a conventional resin cement.

  • Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.

  • Boron-phoshor-silicate glass was fabricated on Si substrates by FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) The microstructrue of silica soot deposited at various conditon such as composition and substrate temperature was analysed by SEM. After consolidation the refractive index and composition of the silica layer were in-vestigated. For refractive index control B, P and Ge were used as additive elements while B and Ge oxides are easily mixed into $SiO_2$, P oxide($B_2O_3$) doping is difficult because of the volatile property due to low melt-ing point. Boron-phosphorous-silicate glass (BPSG) layer were fabricated using bertical torch and optimized flame temperature substrate temperature and distance of torch and substrate. P concentration of BPSG lay-er measured 3.3 Wt% and the consolidation temperature was lower than $1180^{\circ}C$. The measured refractive index of BPSG silica layer in $1.55\;\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength was $1.4480{\pm}1{\times}10^{-1}$ and the thickness was $22{\pm}1\;\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • To reduce noise in high frequency and distortion of signal, the composition of $(Ca_{0.7}Sr_{0.3})(Zr_{0.97}Ti_{0.03})O_3$ and $(Ba_{0.2}Ca_{0.4}Sr_{0.4})TiO_3$ was developed. The composition was not solid solution, but mixtures of various phases composed of Ca, Sr, Zr, Ti and Ba oxides. The dielectric constant increased, the quality factor and the insulation resistance decreased with $(Ba_{0.2}Ca_{0.4}Sr_{0.4})TiO_3$ content. The composition of $0.4(Ba_{0.2}Ca_{0.4}Sr_{0.4})TiO_3$ satisfied the electric characteristics and the temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TCC). In addition, the glass frit and $MnO_2$ also affected the electric characteristics. From the result of the best fit simulation, $MnO_2$ 0.3 mol%, the glass frit 0.6 wt% showed the insulation resistance $906{\Omega}{\cdot}F$, the quality factor 821, and the dielectric constant 92. With the selected composition, MLCC capacitors sized $4.5{\times}3.2{\times}2.5mm$ were manufactured with 105 layered of the dielectric thickness $16{\mu}m$ using Ni inner electrode, They represented the capacitance $98{\sim}102$ nF, the quality factor 1,200 and the insulation resistance $1,500{\Omega}{\cdot}F$. Also, they had high break-down voltage with $107{\sim}115V/{\mu}m$, and satisfied the SL TCC characteristics.

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated marginal fit of glass infiltrated alumina cores fabricated using two techniques and their marginal stability after firing cycles of veneering porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fifteen standardized all-ceramic crowns were fabricated on a metal die using each technique: slip cast technique of VITA In-Ceram sprint Alumina (Group A as control) and plastic foil matrix technique of Turkom-Cera fused alumina core system (Group B). Copings were compared between groups and within groups at coping stage and after firing each layer of veneering porcelain. A device was used to standardize seating of copings on the metal die and positioning of the specimens under the microscope after each stage of fabrication. The specimens were not cemented and marginal gap was measured using an image analyzing software (Imagepro Express) on the photographs captured under an optical microscope. Two tailed unpaired 't test' was used to compare marginal gaps in two groups and one way ANOVA was used to analyze marginal distortion within each group at 95% confidence interval. RESULTS. The marginal gap was smaller at the coping stage in group B ($60+30{\mu}M$) than group A ($81+21{\mu}M$) with statistical significance. After firing of veneering porcelain the difference was insignificant. At the final stage, both groups exhibited lower mean marginal gaps than at the initial coping stage with the difference of $11.75{\mu}M$ for group A and $11.94{\mu}M$ for group B, but it was statistically insignificant due to high value of standard deviation. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that both techniques produced copings with comparable and acceptable marginal fit and marginal stability on firing veneering porcelain.

  • Current study was undertaken to explain the structural evolution and corresponding changes in the properties of calcium aluminate glasses with the variation of SiO2 doping concentration. Calcium aluminate glasses in the compositional ranges of (100-x)(0.6CaO+0.4Al2O3)+xSiO2(where x=0~60) were fabricated. DTA analysis confirmed an anomalous behavior in glass transition temperature (Tg) with the maximum of 887$^{\circ}C$ and minimum of 859$^{\circ}C$ when x=5 and 50, respectively. densities and refractive indices monotonically decreased with increasing SiO2 content and IR transmitting cutoff shifted to shorter wavelength side when the amount of added SiO2 exceeded 5 mole%. IR fundamental vibration absorption peaks showed the change that NBOs were inclined to SiO4 tetrahedron in the low-silica region and NBO per SiO4 tetrahedra changed from 2 to 0 with increasing silica content. Based on the analysis of IR fundamental vibration absorption peaks, the model of the structural change can be proposed in three step: 1) SiO4 scavenged the NBOs located at AlO4-tetrahedra, which resulted in the increased of Tg values, 2) NBOs located in the main network again with a decrease in Tg, and 3) dominated by the decrease in the relative amount of NBOs in the glass system, where Tg re-increased.

  • In order to simultaneously vitrify the ton Exchange Resin(IER) and Dry Active Waste(DAW) generated from the Nuclear Power Plants, a vitrification pilot test was conducted using an induction cold crucible melter. The PCT result evaluating the chemical durability of the vitrified from showed that the final glass was more durable than the benchmark glass. Liquidus temperature for the final vitrified form was 1048 K(775$\^{C}$) fur heat treatment experiments. The value of the compressive strength for the vitrified form was ninety times higher than the regulation limit, 34 kg/㎠. The glasses on bottom, middle and top of the CCM were homogeneous with no secondary phase. The precipitation of the magnetic metal phase was able to be avoided by simultaneously fEeding of DAW with IER containing strongly reducing organics. Volume reduction factor of 74 was achieved through the vitrification Pilot test for mixed waste.

  • Membrane structures which can be used large spatial structure are being expanded because of various advantages. However, despite the diverse membrane structure buildings and materials, the standard for membrane material performance that considering fire safety is still inadequate. Therefore, this study applied basalt or glass woven fabric with flame resistance on architectural membrane, and report the fire safety for architectural membrane using the strength properties, flammability and incombustibility. From the test result, the architectural membrane using basalt or glass woven fabric showed a low heat release rate and total heat release. Therefore, it was confirmed that the fire safety is relatively high.
