Cutting characteristics of in situ toughened $SiC-Si_3N_4$ composite (현장인화 $SiC-Si_3N_4$ 복합재료의 절삭성능 평가)

  • It is known that Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic insert has less hardness than A1$_2$O$_3$ceramic insert. But Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic insert has not only high toughness and strength but also low thermal expansion coefficient, which makes it has longer tool life under thermal stress condition. In this study, commercial Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic insert and home-made SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic insert which has different sintering time and chemical composition is tested under various cutting conditions. The experimental result is compared in terms of tool life and cutting force. Generally, As the cutting speed and the feed rate increased, the cutting force and the flank wear increased too. The performance of SiC-Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic insert shows the possibility to be a new ceramic tool.

  • In this study, we fabricated tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) by using MAO(MgAl-stabilized ) as main material and activated carbon as pore former. Thermal expansion properties of ceramic support with different amounts of activated carbon were analyzed by using dilatometer to decide a suitable sintering temperature. The tubular ceramic supports with different amounts of activated carbon (15, 20, 30wt.%) were fabricated by the extrusion technique. After sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h, cross section and surface morphology of tubular ceramic support were analyzed by using SEM image. Also, the porosity, mechanical property, gas permeability of tubular ceramic supports was measured. Based on these results, we established the suitable fabrication technique of tubular ceramic support for segmented-in-series SOFC.

  • Compositional design and optimization of processing parameters are key factors for controlling and improving the properties of SiC-based electroconductive ceramic composites. Compare economic estimation of SiC ceramic heater with sheathe heater are as followings. (1) Temperature rising time of sheath heater is 1.1 times faster than SiC ceramic heater. (2) Heating insulation of SiC ceramic heater is 2.7 times larger than sheath heater. If SiC ceramic heater is one body type of a product application, contact resistance will decrease. I think that temperature initial rising time is faster than now. The more SiC ceramic heater is used for a long time, the more economic benefit is larger in the view point of heat insulation.

  • Objectives : Ceramic based intra-red Therapy has been effective on dermatitis and immune system. The purpose of this study was to know the clinical effect of ceramic based infra-red therapy on Atopic Dermatitis(AD). Methods: For 3 months from Dec. 2003 to Feb. 2004, we treated ceramic based intra-red therapy to 21 outpatients with AD who visited Hana Oriental hospital. Ceramic based infra-red therapy using GI-2000 system was lighted to undressed outpatients for 15 minutes, three times a week. Results and Conclusions: Ceramic based intra-red therapy showed useful effect on AD, especially itching sign.

  • Sintered alumina ceramic substrate has been used for the insulating substrate for thick Hybrid IC owing to its cheapness and good insulating properties. Some of thick HIC's are important to eliminate the heat emitted from the parts that are mounted on the ceramic substrate. Sintered ceramic substrate can not transfer and emit the heat efficiently. It's been tried to do plasma spray coating of alumina ceramic on the metal substrates that have a good heat emission property. The most important properties to commercialize this ceramic coated metal substrate are surface roughness and deposition efficiency. In this study, plasma spray coating parameters are optimized to minimize the surface roughness and to maximize the deposition efficiency using Taguchi experimental method. By this optimization, the deposition efficiency was greatly improved from 35% at the frist time to 75% finally.

Application of Weifull강s Theory to Evaluation of Strength for Ceramic Fibers (Ceramic 섬유의 강도 평가에 대한 Weibll 이론의 적용)

  • In this work, strength of ceramic fibers and monofilament composites were evaluated on the basis of Weibull's theory. The fibers used were β-SiC and γ-Al2O3 monofilament composites was fabricated by coating Al on the fiber surface by the use of vacuum evaporation method. Average tensile strength of ceramic fibers showed the tendency to linearly decrease with increasing gauge length. Also, Weibull moduli of ceramic fibers were decreased with increasing gauge length, Weibull modulus of β-SiC was 3.5 for 6-50mm, 2.8 for 100-200mm. Weibull modulus of γ-Al2O3 was 6.5 for 20-50mm, 6 for 100mm. Fibers in monofilament retained their original as-produced strength to exposure temperature of 400℃. However, tensile strength of both monofilament composites approved to remarkably degrade due to interfacial reaction-induced flaws on the fiber surface after thermal exposure of 600℃. In this case, Weibull modulus of monofilament composites was 2.7 for β-SiC and 5.2 for γ-Al2O3 respectively.

  • Langasite(La3Ga5SiO14) is a new piezoelectric material which is similar to quartz, LN(LiNbO3) and LT(LiTaO3) in its acoustic behavior. In this study, pure Langasite and Langasite family groups were synthesized by the solid state reactions in air. For the synthesis process, diffusion species were investigated and sintered body of synthesized powders were studied on dielectric property according to surface microstructures.

  • This study aims to evaluate the humidity control performance of low-priced generic ceramic panels that are used to control humidity. Temperature and humidity are monitored by using 'Living Lab' and the change of indoor relative humidity is measured and analyzed. According to the results of the study, the indoor relative humidity of rooms installed with ceramic panels was found to be low compared to that of living rooms by 2.2%RH (test period) and 3.2%RH (daily). In the case of maximum relative humidity, rooms installed with ceramic panels were found to be low by 6.9%RH. The results are attributable to the humidity absorption of ceramic panels. Accordingly, future ceramic panels need the improvement of performance and an appropriate construction area should be derived depending on indoor space.

$MoSi_2$/SiC Ceramic Composites Prepared by Polymer Pyrolysis (고분자 열분해에 의한 $MoSi_2$/SiC 세라믹 복합체)

  • The formation, microstructure and properties of MoSi2/SiC ceramic composites by polymer pyrolysis were investigated for the application of heating element material. Polymethylsiloxanes were mixed with Si, SiC, MoSi2 as filler and ceramic composites prepared by pyrolysis in N2 atmosphere at 1320~145$0^{\circ}C$ were studied. Dimensional change, density variation and phases were analyzed and correlated to the resulting material properties. Microstructures of ceramic composite prepared by polymer pyrolysis were composed of MoSi2, SiC and silicon oxycarbide glass matrix. Depending on the pyrolysis conditions, ceramic composites with a density of 86~90 TD%, a fracture strength of 213~284 MPa, a thermal expansion coefficient of 4~7$\times$10-6 were obtained. The electrical resistivity of the specimen decreased with increasing of temperature up to 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • 표면 윤활층을 가진 나노 알루미나를 진공중에서 가압성형함으로써 결함발생없이 높은 충전압력을 가할 수 있었으며, 높은 밀도, 미세기공, 좁은 기공경 분포를 가지는 성형체를 제조할 수 있었다. 윤활제의 화학 및 기계적 특성에 의하여 변하는 모세관 현상을 조정함으로써 충전효율을 증대하고 결함발생을 억제할 수 있다. 나노분말의 소결에서도 성형 미세구조의 균일도가 치밀화 거동에 여전히 지배적인 역할을 하였다.
