It is said that ceramic arts which reflects the sprit of the age and culture is one of the representative cultural assets in Korea. Ceramic arts has the longest tradition and it has been used in our everyday life from a historical perspective. Unfortunately, most textbooks we use nowadays just show some art works for appreciation. It is impossible to teach unique techniques of ceramic arts with those textbooks. Traditional culture is not considered as a main part of educational contents but surrounding elements. Therefore it is hard for students to learn about our traditional culture deeply and it is also difficult to know the importance of the ceramic arts in secondary schools. Through the education of ceramic arts students can understand our traditional culture and they can also experience the formative arts by using plane and dimensional techniques. Teachers have to focus on historical background, types, functions, and sense of beauty of ceramic arts when they teach students in school. Students can use the knowledge in their daily lives. The education of ceramic arts encourage students to create new culture for ceramic arts.

Glass base sealant is required as a ceramic-ceramic joining material between α-alumina insulation cap and β-alumina electrolyte tube in the development of NaS battery cell package for electrical energy storage system. The fabrication of glass frit by thermal quenching method, phase analysis, particle size analysis, coefficient of thermal expansion and surface roughness according to the glass compositions were analyzed for the fabrication of glass sealing paste for ceramic-ceramic joining. Also, a new evaluation method of the adhesion strength of glass sealant at the small area in ceramic-ceramic joining component was proposed using conventional Dage bond tester that was used to measure the adhesion of solder ball joint.
Considerable research efforts have been explored attempting to enhance the thermal durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) at the high operating temperatures of gas turbines. In this study, the suspension plasma spray (SPS) process was applied to produce TBCs with a segmented structure by using an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) suspension. Four different experiment sets were carried out by controlling the ratio between surface roughness of the bond coat and feed stock size ($R_a/D_{50}$) in order to examine the effect of $R_a/D_{50}$ ratio on the microstructure of SPS-prepared coatings. When the $R_a/D_{50}$ had a high value of 11.8, a deposited thick coating turned out to have a cone-type columnar microstructure. In contrast, at the low $R_a/D_{50}$ values of 2.9 and 0.18, a deposited thick coating appeared to have a dense, vertically-cracked microstructure. However, with the very low $R_a/D_{50}$ value of 0.05 the coating was delaminated.
Three-dimensional(3D) printing is a process for producing complex-shaped 3D objects by repeatedly stacking thin layers according to digital information designed in 3D structures. 3D printing can be classified based on the method and material of additive manufacturing process. Among the various 3D printing methods, digital light processing is an additive manufacturing technique which can fabricate complex 3D structures with high accuracy. Recently, there have been many efforts to use ceramic material for an additive manufacturing process. Generally, ceramic material shows low processability due to its high hardness and strength. The introduction of additive manufacturing techniques into the fabrication of ceramics will improve the low processability and enable the fabrication of complex shapes and parts. In this study, we synthesize silica composite material that can be applied to digital light processing. The rheological and photopolymeric properties of the synthesized silica composite are investigated in detail. 3D objects are also successfully produced using the silica composite and digital light processing.

Statement of problem: All-ceramic restorations have been advocated for superior esthetics. Various post and core systems have been used to improve the strength of damaged teeth, but it is unclear whether they affect the final shade of finished all-ceramic restorations. Purpose: The influence of different types of post and core systems on light transmission through all-ceramic crowns was assessed by spectrophotometric analysis. Also the masking effect of different thickness of ceramic ingot was evaluated. Material and Methods : Forty-five sample disks (15mm in diameter) at several thickness(1.0, 1.5, 2.0mm) and value(shade 100, 200, 300) were made in heat pressed ceramic(IPS-Empress). Background specimens simulating gold-alloy cast posts(Type III casting gold alloy), metal posts(Ni-Cr casting alloy) and ceramic posts(CosmoPost) were fabrica-ted. Resin composite(Z250, A3 shade) was used as a tooth substrate reference. For each combination, the change in color was measured with a spectrophotometer. Readings were performed for 2 conditions (1) ability of ceramic to mask the core in relation to its thickness(1.0, 1.5, or 2.0mm) ; (2) influence of post and core types on the final color of the ceramic. Data were recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ systems and color difference($\Delta$E) was calculated. Results: 100 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post larger than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 2. 200 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, $\Delta$E value for ceramic post was smaller than 1 but $\Delta$E value for metal and gold post was larger than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5 mm, only the $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2, and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. 300 shade ingot: when ceramic thickness was 1.0mm, only $\Delta$E value for metal was larger than 2 and the other samples' $\Delta$E value was smaller than 2. For ceramic thickness of 1.5mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. For ceramic thickness of 2.0mm, $\Delta$E values for all specimens was smaller than 1. Conclusion: The final esthetic result of the IPS-Empress glass-ceramic restoration was not affected by the presence of different core materials when the thickness was more than 2.0 mm. When ceramic thickness decreases to 1.5mm, it is advised to take the substrate aspects into consideration. If the ceramic thickness is less than 1.0mm, using the tooth color matched substrate is strongly recommended.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumetric change of teeth after preparation for various designs and margin locations through Micro CT analysis (Skyscan 1076: SKYSCAN, Konitch, Belgium). Materials and methods: The 36 artificial teeth were used to determine reduction volume of upper central incisor. According to the restorative design these 36 teeth were divided into 4 groups and according to the marginal location each group was divided into 3 subgroups. The volume of unprepared teeth was obtained by using Micro CT and the volume of prepared teeth was obtained in the same method. The CT scanned images before and after preparation were superimposed. Results: The volume difference was significantly increased as follows: traditional laminate veneer < full laminate veneer < all ceramic crown < metal ceramic crown. One-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison analyses were used to analyze the data in this study. In each group the volume difference was significantly increased as follows: 1 mm above CEJ < CEJ < 1 mm below CEJ (P<.05). The % volume difference of all ceramic crown and metal ceramic crown was 31 - 48% and that of laminate veneer was 14 - 30%. The volume difference of the traditional laminate veneer was 1/3 of that of metal ceramic crown. The full laminate (1 mm below CEJ) and all ceramic crown (1 mm above CEJ) showed a similar volume difference. Metal ceramic crown showed 13.7% more volume difference than all ceramic crown. Conclusion: There exists the difference in volumetric change according to designs of restoration and margin locations of preparation.

Si(Al)ON precursor was synthesized by formation of new Si-N bond using organoaluminum imine and liquid type poly(phenyl carbosilane). It was decomposed between $200-600^{\circ}C$, and the ceramic yield was 51% after pyrolysis. 150 - 200 nm in thickness of coating film was obtained by spin coating method. The precursor was easily oxidized during process because it was unstable in air. However the oxygen content was limited to 0.5 - 0.7 to silicon in heat treatment step. Even though the content of nitrogen was decreased by pyrolysis, Al-N and Si-N bonds were formed in ammonia atmosphere, and Si(Al)ON film was formed with 0.2 in content to silicon.
Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber mats generate large amounts of heat through microwave interactions and are used as heating elements in rapid heat treatment furnaces. However, SiC fibers cool immediately when the microwave power is turned off. Therefore, ceramic layers are inserted between the SiC fiber layers to improve the heat conservation performance of SiC fiber mats. In this study, we fabricated SiC fiber mat composites (SMCs) with ceramic layers under various pressures. The SMC fabricated under 0.007 kPa showed the lowest heat-generating temperature and deviation because less necking was observed between the materials. On the other hand, the SMC fabricated under 0.375 kPa showed the highest heat-generating temperature of 1532.33℃. The SMCs prepared in this study using ceramic powder not only showed heat-generating temperatures comparable to those of conventional SiC fiber mats but also exhibited excellent heat-preserving ability.

Ceramic tool has to equip with not only high toughness and strength but also low thermal expansion and good thermal conductivity which leads to the high thermal shock resistance. These characteristics make it have longer tool life under thermal stress condition. In this study, commercial Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic cutting tool and home-made SiC based ceramic cutting tools which have different sintering time and chemical composition are tested under various cutting speed and the feed rate increase, the cutting force and the flank wear growth ratio increase, too. The performance of home-made SiC based ceramic cutting tool shows the possibility to be a new ceramic tool.
