  • A centrifugal atomization process for uranium fuel was developed in order to fabricate high uranium density dispersion fuel for advanced research reactors. Spherical powders of $U_3Si$ and U-Mo were successfully fabricated and dispersed in aluminum matrices. Thermal and mechanical properties of dispersion fuel meat were characterized. Irradiation tests at the research reactor HANARO confirm the excellent performance of high uranium density dispersion fuel.

  • Hybrid atomization is a new atomization technique that combines gas atomization with centrifugal atomization. This process can produce fine, spherical powders economically with a mean size of about 10 m diameter and a tight size distribution.

  • Based on theoretical analysis, a new general equation of mean particle size applicable to both conventional atomization methods and new atomization processes is presented. In gas atomization, it is equivalent with and can be changed into Lubanska Equation. In centrifugal atomization, it can be changed into the equations that are currently the most widely used. In water atomization, it is similar to the equation proposed by Grandzol and Tallmadge. According to the universal equation, new correlations for mean particle size in novel atomization processes such as Hybrid Atomization and Multistage Atomization were proposed and agreed with our experimental data well.

  • The evolution of microstructures in two rapidly solidfied niobium microalloyed steels was studied. These alloys were rapidly solidified by two powder process techniques: nitrogen gas atomization and centrifugal atomization. It was found that in both powder processes, powder particles larger than $20{\mu}m$in diameter were martensitic, and that the nitrogen gas atomized particles solidified cellularly while those that were centrifugally atomized tended to solidify dendritically. Particles smaller than $1{\mu}m$ were not completely characterized because of wide variation in composition.

  • A nozzle with vortex generator was used to develop the low pressure nozzle with high atomization performance and the nozzle atomized the liquid by centrifugal shear forces. In order to analyze the atomization characteristics, a shadowgraphy method was used and the measurement of droplet size was performed by using laser diffraction analyzer. The liquid injection pressure was fixed as 0.03 bar which is very low pressure and the gas injection pressures were changed from 0 bar to 2.0 bar. As a result, the breakup was achieved at the air injection pressure of 0.25 bar and over. The nozzle with the orifice diameter of 0.4 mm and the orifice gap of 0.25 mm presented small droplet diameters under 50 at the air injection pressure of 0.75 bar.

  • The atomization phenomena and spray characteristics of drum type rotary atomizer using centrifugal force from high rotational speed of gas turbine engine shaft were studied through rotary atomizer modeling analysis and experimental method. A test rig for rotary atomization that has range of $5,000{\sim}40,000\;rpm$ was used to make similarity for high speed rotating shaft. Spray visualization methodology and Phase Doppler Anemometry were also used to investigate the atomization mechanism and spray characteristics. We found that the rotating fuel spray has unique breakup process and we have to make breakup point earlier through increasing rotating speed to improve atomization performance.

  • Characteristics of high density U-Mo alloy powder prepared by centrifugal atomization have been examined. The results indicate that the majority of the atomized U-Mo alloy particles has a smooth surface and frequently near-perfect spheroidal shape with few satellites attached. The size distribution of atomized U-Mo alloy powder shows the mono-modal size distribution seen in ligament disintegration mechanism. All phases of atomized alloy powder below 150$\mu\textrm{m}$ irrespectively to particle size are found to be ${\gamma}$-U (cubic structure) phases with isotropic structure and not to be U$_2$Mo phase at all. The microstructure of atomized U-Mo alloy particulates has micro-crystalline structure with non-dendritic gram supersaturated with Mo element. Also the grain size of ${\gamma}$ -U tends to decrease with the decrease of the powder diameter.

  • In order to obtain high quality products in powder metallurgy, it is important to control and understand the densification behavior of metal powders. The effect of the characters of powders on the compaction behavior was studied in this study by using three types of powders produced by the gas atomization, the centrifugal atomization and the twin roll-pulverization. The shape of the powders was a major factor in the apparent or tap density, and the deformation resistance of the matrix of the powders was a major factor in compactibility. Han's yield function (eq.2) for metal powders was simplified from the relationship based on the experimental results of copper powders. In spite of some assumptions, the calculated compaction curves using a new yield functionw was in accordance with the experimental results.
