There are two ways to reduce cement content for a given quality level(strength, workability etc.) in concrete. First, reducing the required paste volume by varying the shape or the grading of aggregates. Secondly, holding the paste volume constant while replacing cement volume with mineral admixtures or mineral fillers. And It will also be proved that the required minimum paste volume is independent of the paste composition, provided the paste composition is in a reasonable range. In this study, therefore, we have an object to determine the required minimum paste volume for a given workability level. For this purpose, we tried the following experiments: vary the paste volume for the three different grading of aggregates and determine the minimum paste volume to achieve a certain level of workability with high-range water reducing admixture.
For this study, the semi-adiabatic temperature rising test is accomplished by using ternary system cement (OPC, BFS, FA) reducing temperature crack. Two tests are conducted; one is for the paste test, and the other is for the concrete test. As the results of paste tests, using fly ash is better to reduce hydration temperature than doing blast furnace slag. In the case of the paste mixed ternary system cement, the more fly ash is mixed and the less blast furnace slag is used, the lower the temperature is. The less the mixture ratio of blast furnace slag is and the more the mixture ratio of fly ash is, the later the temperature rising velocity and descending velocity are. Besides, the temperature is lower if water/binder ratio is high. The use of ternary system cement has the retardation effect of temperature rising because the time to reach the maximum temperature is in the order of OPC100, binary system cement, and ternary system cement. From the test, the maximum temperature of concrete used ternary system cement is $8{\sim}11^{\circ}C$ lower than that of concrete used OPC100. Moreover, temperatures rising velocity and descending velocity of ternary system cement range $47{\sim}51%$ and $37{\sim}42%$ compared with OPC100. The specimen of concrete shows remarkable low internal temperature and slow temperature rising velocity and descending velocity compared with the specimen of paste because it is that temperature loss of concrete is much more than paste specimen according to aggregates.

Some amount of cements can be added into the soil with high water content to improve the engineering properties. In such a case, it is difficult to predict and figure out the phase changes of the soil-cement mixture which is closely associated with workability of the soil-cement mixture. Changes in heat of hydration and hardness of the cement pastes are known to provide the useful information about the phase changes of the soil-cement mixtures. In this study, heat of hydration and cone penetration depth were measured from the specimens of cement paste and 3 soil-cement mixtures. From the experimental results, it was found that the phase changes of the soil-cement mixtures are the same as those of cement paste, and that shear strength of the mixtures abruptly increases when the heat of hydration is minimum. Initial setting time of the mixtures coincides with the state when fall cone penetration depth was 1.0 mm and it is defined as plastic limit of the mixtures. Initial setting time of the mixtures is retarded as soil/cement ratio is increased. Measurements of heat of hydration and fall cone apparatus could be the useful tools to predict the phase changes of tile soil-cement mixtures.

Theoretical models for prediction of the mechanical properties of cement mortar are developed based on the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products, capillary pores and microcracks. The models account for intermolecular interactions involving the nano-scale calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) constituents of hydration products, and consider the effects of capillary pores as well as the microcracks within the hydrated cement paste and at the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Cement mortar was modeled as a three-phase material composed of hydrated cement paste, fine aggregates and ITZ. The Hashin's bound model was used to predict the elastic modulus of mortar as a three-phase composite. Theoretical evaluation of fracture toughness indicated that the frictional pullout of fine aggregates makes major contribution to the fracture energy of cement mortar. Linear fracture mechanics principles were used to model the tensile strength of mortar. The predictions of theoretical models compared reasonably with empirical values.

A comparative study on the effects of mean particle diameter and substitutional ratio of II-anhydrite on the fluidity of cement paste has been conducted. Three different mean particle diameters(4, 14 and $35{\mu}m$) and four different substitution ratios(3, 5, 10, 15wt%) have been tested while the dosage of two superplasticizers - naphtalenic(NSF) and polycarboxylic(NT-2) - has been varied from 0 to 2.0wt%. To investigate the effects of those parameters, the variation in fluidity and apparent viscosity of the cement paste has been observed as a function of the elapsed time. The initial fluidity of the cement paste is more affected by the increase in substitution ratio than by the mean particle size of the II-anhydrite. When the substitution ratio of the II-anhydrite is fixed at 10wt%, addition of 1.0wt% NT-2 improves the fluidity of paste cement more than that for NSF. This case has showed the best improvement of the fluidity in the range of parameters investigated. At the addition of 1.0wt% NT-2, apparent viscosity of the cement paste has been noticeably decreased as substitutional ratio of II-anhydrite increases. It was found that it would be more effective to substitute II-anhydrite at a certain ratio to improve the fluidity of the cement paste, in addition to adding NT-2.
Experiments were designed to investigate the flow behavior of portland cement paste and concrete incorporating superplasticizers. The paste and concrete mixtures were subjected to prolonged mixing for up to 110 min at high temperature. The yield stress values of concrete and that of the corresponding cement paste were measured using a rotating rheometer and viscometer, respectively. The results reveal a weak linear correlation between the yield stress of concrete mixtures and that of the corresponding cement pastes. Results also indicate that the yield stress of concrete varies in a linear fashion with the elapsed time, while its variations with the temperature and superplasticizer dosage follow power and inverse power functions, respectively. In this study, the genetic algorithms (GA) technique was used to predict the yield stress of concrete considering various parameters, such as the mixing time, ambient temperature, and superplasticizer dosage. A sensitivity study was conducted to evaluate the ability of the GA equations thus developed to capture the effects of test parameters on the yield stress of concrete. It was found that the GA equations were sensitive to the effects of test parameters and provided yield stress predictions that compared well with corresponding experimental data.
Recently, a variety of special concrete structures have been designed in domestic and overseas construction markets and more advanced construction technology is required. Therefore, it is necessary to secure quantitative construction technology. For this purpose, it is essential to develop a standard reference material having a constant flow performance and quality to evaluate quantitative performance. On the other hand, the flowability of the concrete is greatly influenced by the flowability of the cement paste. Also, in consideration of design strength and workability, mix design is carried out at various mixing ratios according to the purpose of the site. Therefore, in this study, based on the derived components of standard reference materials for cement paste, we suggested mixing ratio of standard reference materials that can uniformly simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste according to W/C. As a result, it was found that the yield stress was determined by the ratio of water and glycerol but plastic viscosity was controled by limestone content. Finally, the ratio of standard reference materials to simulate the rheological range of cement paste by W/C was suggested.
Hydration characteristics of cement containing zeolite mined at Daepo in Gyeongbuk province were studied for use as a mineral admixture. The cement paste containing zeolite was characterized by the measurement of heat evolution, XRD, EDS, nitrogen adsorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The cement paste containing zeolite exhibited tendencies toward acceleration of paste setting and promotion of cement hydration with the increase of zeolite content. The flow of mortar containing zeolite strongly reduced with increase of zeolite content. Compressive strength of the mortar containing zeolite increased very rapidly at an early age in comparison with plain mortar. These results would be related to aluminum species escaped from zeolite particles during the alkali dealumination of zeolite by the hydration process of cement.
