Filling materials poured into precast member joint are subjected to restraint stress by the precast member and joint reinforcement. The induced stress will likely cause cracks at early ages and performance degradation of the entire structure. To prevent these issues and design reasonable joints, it is very important to analyze and evaluate the restrained shrinkage cracks of filling materials at various restraint conditions. In this study, a new time zero-that defines the shrinkage development time of a filling material-is proposed to calculate the accurate amount of shrinkage. The tensile stresses and strengths at different ages were compared through the ring test (AASHTO PP34) to evaluate the crack potential of the restrained filling materials at various restraint conditions. The mixture which contained an expansive additive and a shrinkage reducing agent exhibited high resistance to shrinkage cracking owing to the high-drying shrinkage compensation effect. The high-performance, fiber-reinforced cement composite, and ultra-high-performance, fiber-reinforced cement composite yielded very high resistance to shrinkage and cracking owing to the pull-out property of steel fibers. To this end, multiple nonlinear regression analyses were conducted based on the test results. Accordingly, a modified tensile stress equation that considered both the geometric shape of the specimen and the intrinsic properties of the material is proposed.
This study investigates the field application, Songdo the # 1st WORLD, on zero-crack construction of the fundamental mass concrete using double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture. Experimental results of hydration heat analysis showed that crack modulus of concrete incorporating 20% of blast furnace slag cement was 1.0 in 120 hours, representing 50% probability of crack occurrence, thus requiring additional measures. As for a curing method, a specimen insulating two layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets exhibited only $16.5^{\circ}C$ difference between upper and lower sections, and it also showed favorable workability as well as competitive economic side. Therefore it was determined to use it for curing method in this field. For the curing results of practical field, using 2 layers of vinyl chloride+double bubble sheets and applying low heat mixture on the fundamental mass concrete in 3A residential building exhibited less than only $15^{\circ}C$ difference between surface and center section of that in 5 days elapse and less than $20^{\circ}C$ in 9 days. This means that the crack by hydration heat was prevented, and other fields structures also resisted the plastic shrinkage by insulating the vinyl, sinking crack by second temping, even drying shrinkage by the mixture of low unit water. Therefore the crack on the placement has not been found so far, since the construction was started before 6 month.
Background: A behavior-based safety initiative card-issuing system was introduced at a cement-manufacturing company in Zimbabwe in 2008 to try and curb accident occurrence. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Behaviour Based Safety Initiative card system as a tool used for reducing accident frequencies. Methods: A mixed-method approach that involving administering piloted questionnaires to 40 out of 244 randomly selected employees, making observations, and reviewing secondary data were done to collect data from different sources in the organization in 2013. A paired t-test was conducted to test whether there was significant difference in accident occurrence before and after the implementation of the BBSI. Scatterplots were also used to establish the correlation between the issuance of cards and the accident and injury occurrence. Results: The findings suggest that the introduction of the card system brought a significant decrease in accident and injury occurrence. A negative correlation between card issuance and accident occurrence was observed, i.e., the greater the number of cards issued, the fewer the number of accidents. It was also noted that the card system positively influenced the mindset of workers towards safe work practices. Conclusion: The card system had an influence on the reduction of accidents and injuries. The organization should leverage on issuing more cards to further reduce the number of accidents and injuries to zero.
This paper has presented an effective and accurate meso-scale finite element model for simulating the fracture process of concrete under compression-shear loading. In the proposed model, concrete is parted into four important phases: aggregates, cement matrix, interfacial transition zone (ITZ), and the initial defects. Aggregate particles were modelled as randomly distributed polygons with a varying size according to the sieve curve developed by Fuller and Thompson. With regard to initial defects, only voids are considered. Cohesive elements with zero thickness are inserted into the initial mesh of cement matrix and along the interface between aggregate and cement matrix to simulate the cracking process of concrete. The constitutive model provided by ABAQUS is modified based on Wang's experiment and used to describe the failure behaviour of cohesive elements. User defined programs for aggregate delivery, cohesive element insertion and modified facture constitutive model are developed based on Python language, and embedded into the commercial FEM package ABAQUS. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed model are firstly identified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones, and then it is used to investigate the effect of meso-structure on the macro behavior of concrete. The shear strength of concrete under different pressures is also involved in this study, which could provide a reference for the macroscopic simulation of concrete component under shear force.
This experimental investigation was aimed at gathering information on the flexural properties, including ductility, of high-strength lightweight concrete members(concrete with a dry unit weight of approximately 1.85t/$\textrm{m}^3$ and with compressive strength approaching 630kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 56days) under reversed cyclic loading. Two sets of six specimens each were manufactured using lightweght aggregate concrete having compressive strength of 350kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 28days and 630kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 56days. The test variables were the concrete strength, the amount of longitudinal reinforcement, and the spacing of ties. The test results, including hysteretic load-deflection curves, for the specimens representing columns under zero axial load are reported in this paper.
Blast furnace slag is one kind of industrial by-product and was utilized with recycled fine aggregates for the manufacture of zero cement mortar. As the blast furnace slag was from different areas, the strength of the specimen using blast furnace slag showed different performances. In this study, blast furnace slag generated in different areas in Korea has been chosen, fundamental performances of the blast furnace slag blended mortar has been tested to evaluate the quality of the blast furnace slag. Results showed that difference for flowability is limited. As the alkali activation of the blast furnace slag, the compressive strength showed different results. The flexural strength showed little difference when the aggregates and types of blast furnace slag changed.
