The oxygen electrode of a biosensor needs enzyme immobilized membrane and a dialysis membrane to measure the oxygen concentration that remains after an enzyme reacts with its substrate. Accodingly, a single-layer PVA laminated CTA/PCL membrane was developed as an oxygen biosensor electrode. The enzymes were immobilized on a cellulose triacetate/polycarprolactone membrane using the 1,1'-carbonyl diimidazole(CDI) method, and then laminated with polyvinyl alcohol, aldehyde and acid. The alcohol oxidase and PVA laminated CTA/PCL membrane was tested with various concentration of enzyme substrates using a Yellow Springs Instrument(YSI) oxygen sensor. Under 5-10mmol substrates produced $0.37{\sim}0.83{\mu}A$(r=0.995) currents, and ater 8 weeks the glucose oxidase activity remained at about 56%, while the other activities remained very low. A SEM indicated a smooth surface and tightly attached PVA on the enzyme-immobilized CTA/PCL membranes.
The present work proposes a simple electrochemical method applicable to any immobilization processes of oxidase using a Clark type oxygen electrode as a base transducer. The present work suggests an optimal immobilization technique among three different methods of glucose oxidase(GOD) onto one side of $37[\mu}$mthick blend membranes, composed o 80% of cellulose triacetate and 20% of polycaprolactone, on the basis of the maximum Michaelis-Menten parameter(Vm) determined by either steady state or transient analyses. The electrode system was made of disk type gold cathode(4mm diameter) and Ag/AgCl anode. One side of the blend membrane was in contact with the cathode surface while the other side was immobilized with GOD either in covalent-bond or cross-linked forms, the latter being covered by $25{\mu}$m thick dialysis membrane of cellulose acetate. The resultant current density was on-line monitored by a potentiostat while glucose level was varied from 1 to 20 mM. The present study shows that direct cross-linking of GOD with glutaraldehyde was mostly preferred for fabrication of glucose sensor, on the basis of resultant kinetic parameters from either steady state or transient analyses.
The presented research is about characterization of Cellulose Triacetate (CTA) based Polymer Inclusion Membranes (PIMs) which incorporated the commercial extractant Aliquat 336, Tributylphosphate (TBP) as modifier and 2-Nitro Phenyl Pentyl Ether (NPPE) as plasticizer, for the preparation of the membranes. Chemical and physical characteristics of the synthesized membranes especially membrane thickness and side difference effects were investigated. Different surface structures and membrane thickness affect the extraction efficiency of membranes. Membrane extraction experiments were studied where the glass-facing surface of the membranes placed next to feed phase and the air-facing surface to stripping phase. The membrane was characterized by means of AFM, FT-IR and SEM.

The large quantity of liquid wastes from nuclear industries such as nuclear power plants would become a serious storage problem in view point of the environmental safety. The liquid wastes should be concentrated to a smallest possible volume before the storage. The use of supported liquid membranes (SLMs) for this purpose is very attractive [1,2], however loss of solvent and carrier in the surrounding solutions limits the stability of SLMs and hinders their commercial application in the industries.(omitted)
In the process of pervaporation separation for aqueous ethanol solution through cellulose tai-acetate(CTA) membrane, the modelling on the solution-diffusion permeation mechanism was built up on the basis of sorption and permeation experimental results. Also its function type and parameter were examined. The composition of sorption equilibrium in three component system(Ethanol/Water/CTA) were compared with the calculated value by Flory-Huggins' equation using the pure component sorption data. In order to apply the thermodynamic equilibrium relationship between the membrane free composition in the membrane and the equilibrium composition in the liquid phase, the apparent activity this system, however, the results were not satisfied. Diffusion equations were expressed with the concentration gradient considering permeate alone, and a concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient which includes a parameter was used. And this model was fitted with the measured permeation rates. If the permeation rate and the amount of sorption of one component were much larger than those of the other, the bulk flow term could not be negligible. The flux and selectivity were increased with increasing temperature, and with decreasing downstream pressure.

Glycerol triacetate(triacetin) is the currently used common plasticizer in the making filters from cellulose acetate tow. For the mono acetate filter, the determination of triacetin contents is already established by CORESTA recommended method (No. 59). But unfortunately, the analytical method of triacetin in the activated carbon filter have not reported so far. In this study, it was established the analytical method of carbon filter's triacetin contents at various extraction conditions, bath ratio and internal standard materials. The confidential level appeared above $95\%$ when the extraction time, ISTD material and bath ratio was 3 hours, tripropionin and below 500 mg activated carbon / 50 $m\ell$ ethanol, respectively. Also, in the distribution of triacetin with filter materials in activated carbon filters, the triacetin amount was the most contained in activated carbon. Therefore, this method can be applied to the determination of triacetin contents in the activated carbon filter.
This paper is a continuation of our previous $paper,^1$ and deals with Eq.(1) (see the text), which was theoretically derived in the $paper,^1$$ [{\eta}]^f\; and\; [{\eta}]^0$ is the intrinsic viscosity at stress f and f = O, respectively. Equation (1) predicts how $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ changes with stress f, relaxation time ${\beta}_2$ of flow unit 2 and a constant $c_2$ related with the elasticity of molecular spring of flow unit 2. In this paper, Eq.(1) is applied to a biopolymer, e.g., poly (${\gamma}$-benzyl L-glutamate), and nonbiopolymers, e.g., polyisobutylene, polystyrene, polydimethylsiloxane and cellulose triacetate. It was found that the $c_2$ factor is zero for non-biopolymers while $c_2{\neq}0$ for biopolymers as found $previously.^1$ Because of the non-Newtonian nature of the solutions, the ratio $[{{\eta}}]^f / [{\eta}]^0$ drops from its unity with increasing f. We found that the smaller the ${\beta}_2,$ the larger the $f_c$ at which the viscosity ratio drops from the unity, vice versa.

Desalination by reverse osmosis (RO), which first entered commercial use in the 1970s, was initially mainly used for treating brackish water. Technological progress led to the development of an RO membrane enabling single-pass seawater desalination. Toyobo succeeded in developing a single-pass seawater desalination RO module composed of hollow fiber type membranes made of cellulose triacetate in 1978, and then in 1979 began production of the first commercially available double-element module. This double-element module has many advantages suitable for seawater desalination. It has high chlorine tolerance and high salt rejection, derived from the properties of the membrane material, and it is highly resistant to fouling and scaling matters due to the unique flow pattern and fiber bundle configuration. These advantages help to explain why the Toyobo double-element module has been used so successfully at the many seawater desalination plants around the world. Since the 1980s, large plants capable of desalinating several tens of thousands of cubic meters a day have sprung up around the Mediterranean and In the Middle East. The Jeddah RO Phase I Plant, which has a capacity of 56, 800m$^3$/day, went into operation in 1989. In 1994, the same sized Phase II Plant came on stream, giving the plant a huge total capacity of 113, 600m$^3$/day. The plant constructor Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), and the RO membrane manufacturer Toyobo Co., Ltd. In 1998, the world's largest RO seawater desalination plant in operation, which has a capacity of 128, 000m$^3$/day and is run by Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), went into operation at Yanbu. RO seawater desalination technology has thus already reached the stage of full-scale commercial use. In order to encourage its wider use, however, RO desalination needs to be made more economical by lowering construction and water treatment costs. Toyobo has therefore developed a new economical RO desalination system by a recovery ratio of 60% using a high-pressure module with a high product flow rate. In 2000, Toyobo high recovery membrane module was selected for the largest seawater desalination plant in Japan, which has a capacity of 50, 000m$^3$/day.

Silver nanoparticles were attached by chemical reduction after synthesizing a porous PVK-CTA complex. The PVK-CTA complex was synthesized by polymerizing N-vinylcarbazole in a CTA-chloroform solution using iron(III) chloride as an oxidizing agent and a honeycomb-pattern with uniformly formed macropores was formed by applying steam to the complex surface soaked with a volatile solvent under humid conditions. Using TTF as a reducing agent and PVP as a dispersant, silver nanoparticles were attached on the Honeycomb-pattern complex surface through chemical reduction. The formation of the complex was confirmed by FT-IR and UV-Vis spectrometry, and the degree of thermal decomposition of the complexes was analyzed after N-vinylcarbazole was polymerized by varying its concentration. The uniformity of the pores on the composite surface and the dispersibility of the attached silver nanoparticles were investigated by SEM. The dispersibility of the silver nanoparticles was also analyzed by varying the concentrations of reducing agent and dispersant and precursor.
Feasibility of simultaneous removal of organic materials and nitrogen in the wastewater from fisheries processing plant was evaluated using entrapped mixed microbial cell (EMMC) process. The experiment was performed using activated sludge from municipal sewage treatment plant which was immobilized with gel matrix by cellulose triacetate. It was found the stable operation at the treatment system which is composed of anoxic and oxic tank, was possible when the organic and nitrogen loading rates were increased stepwise. The organic and nitrogen loading rates were conducted from 0.65 to $1.72kgCOD/m^3/d$ and from 0.119 to $0.317kg\;T-N/m^3/d$ with four steps, respectively. The maximum nitrogen loading rate which could satisfy the regulated effluent standard of nitrogen concentration, was $0.3kg\;T-N/m^3/d$. The removal efficiency of total nitrogen was decreased apparently as increasing nitrogen loading rates, whereas the removal efficiency of ammonium nitrogen was effective at the all tested nitrogen loading rates. Therefore, it was concluded that nitrification was efficient at the system. Nitrate was removed efficiently at the anoxic tank. whereas the nitrification efficiency at the oxic tank ranged 94.0% to 96.9% at the tested loading rates. The removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and those of total nitrogen at the entire system ranged from 94.2% to 96.6% and 73.4% to 83.4%, respectively.
