Wetlands often function as a nutrient sink. It is well known that increased input of nutrient increases the primary productivity but it is not well understood what is the fate of produced biomass in wetland ecosystem. Water and sediment quality, decomposition rate of cellulose, and sediment accumulation rate in 11 montane marshes in northern Sierra Nevada, California were analyzed to trace the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus content in water on nutrient dynamics. Concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in water were in the range of 27 to 607, 8 to 73, and 6 to 109 ppb, respectively. Concentrations of ammonium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium in water were the highest in Markleeville, which has been impacted by animal farming. Nitrate and SRP concentrations in water were the highest in Snow Creek, which has been impacted by human residence and a golf course. Cellulose decomposition rates ranged from 4 to 75 % per 90 days and the highest values were measured in Snow Creek. Concentrations of total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in sediment ranged from 8.0 to 42.8, 0.5 to 3.0, and 0.076 to 0.162 %, respectively. Accumulation rates of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluctuated between 32.7 to 97.1, 2.4 to 9.0, and 0.08 to $1.14gm^{-2}yr{-1}$, respectively. Accumulation rates of carbon and nitrogen were highest in Markleeville and that of phosphorus was highest in Lake Van Norden. Correlation analysis showed that decay rate is correlated with ammonium, nitrate, and SRP in water. There was no correlation between element content in sediment and water quality. Nitrogen accumulation rate was correlated with ammonium in water. These results showed that element accumulation rates in montane wetland ecosystems are determined by decomposition rate rather than nutrient input. This study stresses a need for eco-physiological researches on the response of microbial community to increased nutrient input and environmental change because the microbial community is responsible for the decomposition process.
Rice, the staple food in Korea, is deficient to some extent in protein, lipid and vitamins. This study was carried out in order to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation to the rice diet of cellulose, ginseng, and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol on lead toxicity in rats. Using male rats fed the rice diet with the distilled drinking water containing 750mg of lead as nitrate per liter, for 11 weeks, organ weights, hemoglobin levels, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity and accumulation of lead in liver, blood and kidney were observed. Supplementation of cellulose, ginseng and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol to the lead groups showed the protective effect significantly in the weight of liver but no influence in hemoglobin levels. Ginseng especially decreased the serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase activity to normal level. The three supplemented diets reduced the lead accumulation in kidney and blood, but not in liver.

This paper reports a customized silver ink and its inkjet printing process on a cellulose electro-active paper (EAPap). To synthesize a silver ink, silver nanoparticle is synthesized from silver nitrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone and ethylene glycol, followed by adding a viscosifier, hydroxyethyl-cellulose solution, and a surfactant, diethylene glycol. The silver ink is used in an inkjet printer (Fujifilm Dimatix DMP-2800 series) to print silver electrodes on cellulose EAPap. After printing, the electrodes are heat treated at $200^{\circ}C$. The sintered electrodes show that the thickness of the electrodes linearly increases as the number of printing layers increases. The electrical resistivity of the printed electrodes is $23.5{\mu}{\Omega}-cm$. This customized ink can be used in inkjet printer to print complex electrode patterns on cellulose EAPap to fabricate flexible smart actuators, flexible electronics and sensors.
Asp. usumii IAM 2185 was selected as a strain producing the powerful raw starch digesting glucoamylase. The optimum initial pH, the optimum temperature and the optimum cultural time for the enzyme production on wheat bran medium were pH 6-8,25-$30^{\circ}C$ and 72 hrs, respectively. The addition of ammonium nitrate and albumin on wheat bran medium, respectively, increase slightly the enzyme production. The enzyme was purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation, CM-cellulose and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The specific activity of the purified enzyme was 34.3 U/mg protein and the yield of enzyme activity was 10.3%. The purified enzyme showed a single band on polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis and its molecular weight was estimated to be 67,000 by SDS polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. The isoelectric point for the purified enzyme was pR 3.7. The optimum temperature and optimum pH were $60^{\circ}C$and pH 3.0 and the purified enzyme was stable in the pH range of 1.0-11.0. The purified enzyme was stable below $50^{\circ}C$ and its thermostability was greatly increased by the addition of $Ca^{2+}$. The purified enzyme showed a high hydrolysis rate on various raw starches such as corn, rice, yam, arrow root, sweet potato and glutinous rice.

Cellulose nitrate (CN) composite membranes, containing cobalt porphyrin (CoP) complexes self-assembled within nanometer-sized rhenium clusters (ReCoP), have been prepared and their oxygen and nitrogen gas permeabilities were analyzed. The solubility of ReCoP and the characteristics of the corresponding composite membranes were analyzed using a Cahn microbalance, FT-IR spectroscopy, wide-angle X-ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry. The nitrogen permeability through the CN composite membranes decreased upon addition of ReCoP and CoP, which implies that the presence of these oxygen carrier complexes affects the structure of the polymer matrix. The oxygen permeability through the composite membranes containing small quantities of ReCoP decreased, but it increased upon increasing the concentration. The oxygen gas transport was affected by the matrix at low ReCoP concentrations, but higher concentrations of ReCoP increased the oxygen permeability as a result of its reversible and specific interactions with oxygen, effectively realizing ReCoP carrier-mediated oxygen transport.
Cellulose nanoparticles loaded with vitamin I acetate were prepared by modified spantaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. After cellulose derivatives were dissolved in mixed acetone/ethanol organic solvent with vitamin E acetate, cellulose nanoparticle suspensions were dispersed in poly(oxyethylene sorbitane monooleate) solution using ultrasonicator. Particle size and loading amount of vitamin I acetate were measured by particle size analyser and UV-spectrometer, respectively. The stability of nanoparticle was determined by measuring the change of the particle size at room temperature for 30 days and the morphology was observed by SEM. Morphology of cellulose nanoparticles was spherical and particle size was not changed at room temperature for 30 days. The optimum condition for the preparation of cellulose nanoparticles was 1% w/v cellulose nitrate with 8% w/v poly(oxyethylene sorbitane monooleate) solution. It showed that particle size and loading amount of vitamin E acetate was 65nm and 71%, respectively.
A denitrification bacterium was isolated from riverbed soil and identified as Ochrobactrum sp., whose specific enzymes for denitrification metabolism were biochemically assayed or confirmed with specific coding genes. The denitrification activity of strain G3-1 was proportional to glucose/nitrate balance, which was consistent with the theoretical balance (0.5). The modified graphite felt cathode with neutral red, which functions as a solid electron mediator, enhanced the electron transfer from electrode to bacterial cell. The porous carbon anode was coated with a ceramic membrane and cellulose acetate film in order to permit the penetration of water molecules from the catholyte to the outside through anode, which functions as an air anode. A non-compartmented electrochemical bioreactor (NCEB) comprised of a solid electron mediator and an air anode was employed for cultivation of G3-1 cells. The intact G3-1 cells were immobilized in the solid electron mediator, by which denitrification activity was greatly increased at the lower glucose/nitrate balance than the theoretical balance (0.5). Metabolic stability of the intact G3-1 cells immobilized in the solid electron mediator was extended to 20 days, even at a glucose/nitrate balance of 0.1.
This study was conducted to determine the potential applicability of slowly released molasses (SRM) to treat nitratecontaminated groundwater. SRM was made by dispersing molasses in hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose-silicamicrocrystalline cellulose matrix. Column test indicated that SRM could continuously release molasses with slowly decreasing release rates of $64.6mg-COD/L{\cdot}h$ up to 65 hrs, $12.1mg-COD/L{\cdot}h$ up to 215 hrs, and $4.4mg-COD/L{\cdot}h$up to 361 hrs. A batch test using an isolated indigenous heterotrophic denitrifier Pseudomonas sp. KY1 having nitrite reductase (nirK) and liquid molasses demonstrated that the bacterium decreased 100 mg-N/L of nitrate to less than 10 mg-N/L at the C/N ratio of 10/1 in 48 hours. In a Pseudomonas sp. KY1-attached Ottawa sand column which continuously received molasses from a SRM-containing reservoir, the bacterium successfully removed nitrate from 20 mg-N/L to 3 mg-N/L during the 361 hours of column operation. The results showed the possibility that SRM can be used as a reliable, longterm extra carbon source for indigenous heterotrophic denitrifiers.

Variance of whiteness after graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile, methylmethacrylate and acrylamide onto bleached cellulose using Ce(IV) salt as initiators and the effect of homopolymer on the grafted fibers by photo-irradiation were studied. Also, the development of Yellowing were determined after carbon-arc radiation in a Fade-o-meter. The results were as follows: (1) Variation of whiteness of grafted cellulose fibers were influenced by graft-ratio, Inorganic-Organic Balance (IOB) of functional group in used monomers and adhering homopolymers on the grafed fibers. (2) Yellowing was not affected by the concentration of Ceric Ammonium Nitrate directly during reaction (eg. 0.008>0.006>0.014 M).
Sixty three species and 5 varieties belonging to 30 fungal genera were collected from 75 soil samples. Cultivated (29 genera and 58 species + 5 var.), desert (22 and 35 + 2 var.) and saline soil (21 and 41 + 1 var.) fungi were recovered on glucose-, cellulose- and 50% sucrose-Czapek's agar at $28^{\circ}C$. The most common genera were Alternaria, Aspergillus, Emerieella, Fusarium, Mycosphaerella, Nectria and Penicillium. The most prevalent species from the three types of soils on the three types of media were Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, A. terreus, Emerieella nidulans, Fusarium oxysporum, Myeosphaerella tassiana, Nectria haematococca and Penicillium ehrysogenum. Chaetomium globosum was in the top of fungi in producing endo-$\beta$-1,4-glucanases among the 42 tested isolates obtained from soils on cellulose-Czapek's agar. Maximum production of this enzyme by C. globosum obtained after 6 days of incubation at $30^{\circ}C$ with culture medium containing maltose as a carbon source and ammonium nitrate as a nitrogen source and pH initially adjusted to 6.
