The ubiquitin-proteasome system and the autophagy lysosome system are the two major protein degradation machineries in eukaryotic cells. These two systems coordinate the removal of unwanted intracellular materials, but the mechanism by which they achieve this synchronization is largely unknown. The ubiquitination of substrates serves as a universal degradation signal for both systems. Our study revealed that the amino-terminal Arg, a canonical N-degron in the ubiquitin-proteasome system, also acts as a degradation signal in autophagy. We showed that many ER residents, such as BiP, contain evolutionally conserved arginylation permissive pro-N-degrons, and that certain inducers like dsDNA or proteasome inhibitors cause their translocation into the cytoplasm where they bind misfolded proteins and undergo amino-terminal arginylation by arginyl transferase 1 (ATE1). The amino-terminal Arg of BiP binds p62, which triggers p62 oligomerization and enhances p62-LC3 interaction, thereby stimulating autophagic delivery and degradation of misfolded proteins, promoting cell survival. This study reveals a novel ubiquitin-independent mechanism for the selective autophagy pathway, and provides an insight into how these two major protein degradation pathways communicate in cells to dispose the unwanted proteins. If ranging processes are not frequent in an uplink OFDMA system, the timing synchronization between base and mobile stations may not be maintained. Especially in the case of infrequent random accesses in a large cell, timing offsets can be considerable and the destroyed orthogonality of OFDMA signals may result in the degraded performance. This paper proposes a novel random access scheme for uplink OFDMA systems, which support the orthogonality of OFDMA signals with timing offsets by allowing a random access OFDMA symbol shorter than a normal one. In order to make uplink OFDMA systems robust to timing offsets, the proposed scheme inserts a zero-padding region in an OFDMA symbol.

An analog / digital mixed mode frequency multiplication and distribution ASIC for switch link or network synchronization of ATM switching system for B-ISDN has designed. This ASIC generates 234-7 MHz system clock and 77.76 MHz, 19.44 MHz user clocks using 46.94 MHz external clock. It also includes digital circuits for checking and selecting between the two external clocks. For effective ASIC design, full custom technique is used in analog PLL circuit and standard cell based technique is used in digital circuit. Resistors and capacitors are specially designed so the chip can be implemented in 0.8$\mu\textrm{m}$ digital CMOS technology.
We have been studying application of electrochemical noise (Fluctuation) analysis for localized corrosion. Foils of Zinc, Aluminum and Magnesium were used as specimens for electrochemical cell simulating localized corrosion. These specimens were dipped in sodium chloride solutions adjusted to each exponent of Hydrogen ion concentration (pH) condition of 5.5, 10, 12 respectively. Time variations of potential and current were measured in those solutions, and simultaneously the surfaces of specimens were observed using microscope with television monitor. Two types of electrochemical cells were arranged for experiments simulated localized corrosion. The fluctuations on trendy component of short-circuited potential and short-circuited current were appeared in synchronization. It was seemed that these fluctuations result from hydrogen evolution on the aluminum active site in the crevice from the microscopic observation. In the case of zinc and magnesium, fluctuations appeared on the trendy component of the corrosion potential. Two types fluctuation were detected. First one is the fluctuation varied periodically. The second one is the random fluctuation. It was seemed that these fluctuations result from generation of corrosion products and hydrogen evolution on the active site in the crevice of zinc and magnesium from the microscopic observation.

Globally-Asynchronous Locally-Synchronous (GALS) systems are worthy of notice as an adequate architecture for a large scaled chip design with guaranteeing easy designs and functional confidence. In this paper, we suggest an advanced structure of the interface unit which is indispensable for GALS systems by using stoppable clocks. The proposed interface unit is composed of a sender module and a receiver module. The sender module can carry out data transmission partially without the relation to an internal clock. We have designed it with 0.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ standard cell library at the gate level and simulated its operation to show performance improvement. Finally, we constructed all example circuit with the interface unit and proved the correct operation of it.
Echinacoside, an active compound in the herb Herba Cistanche, has been reported to inhibit glutamate release. In this study, we investigated the effects of echinacoside on spontaneous excitatory synaptic transmission changes induced by 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), by using the in vitro rat hippocampal slice technique and whole-cell patch clamp recordings from CA3 pyramidal neurons. Perfusion with echinacoside significantly suppressed the 4-AP-induced epileptiform activity in a concentration-dependent manner. Echinacoside reduced 4-AP-induced increase in frequency of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) but it did not affect the amplitude of sEPSCs or glutamate-activated currents, implicating a presynaptic mechanism of action. Echinacoside also potently blocked sustained repetitive firing, which is a basic mechanism of antiepileptic drugs. These results suggest that echinacoside exerts an antiepileptic effect on hippocampal CA3 pyramidal neurons by simultaneously decreasing glutamate release and blocking abnormal firing synchronization. Accordingly, our study provides experimental evidence that echinacoside may represent an effective pharmacological agent for treating epilepsy.

Pigs are genetically, anatomically, and physiologically similar to humans. Recently, pigs are in the spotlight as a suitable source animal for xenotransplantation. However, to use pigs as source animals, pigs should be raised in designated pathogen-free facilities. There is abundant data from embryo transfer (ET) experiments using farm pigs as surrogates, but data on ET experiments using minipigs are scarce. Eighty minipigs were used for ET experiments and after transplantation, the implantation and delivery rates were investigated. It was also confirmed whether the pregnancy rate could be increased by changing the condition or surgical method of the surrogate. In the case of minipigs that gave birth, the size of the fetal sac on the 28th day of ET was also measured. The factors that can affect the pregnancy rate such as estrus synchronization program, ovulation status at the time of ET, the number of repeated ET surgeries, and the ET sites, were changed, and the differences on the pregnancy rate were observed. However there were no significant differences in pregnancy rate in minipigs. The diameter of the implanted fetal sac on the 28th day after ET in the minipigs whose delivery was confirmed was calculated to be 4.7 ± 0.5 cm. In conclusion, there were no significant differences in pregnancy rate of minipigs in the comparative experiment on various factors affecting the pregnancy rate. However, additional experiments and analyses are needed due to the large individual differences of the minipigs.
In this study, the system was composed of the booster chopper and the power converter, which is a pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage inverter using a hybrid power generation system solar cell energy and wind force, Furthermore, in order to compensate the PWM voltage type inverter was linked with the general commercial power source, and through a normal operation of energy storage system (ESS), the system operated the LED Taxi Light by Wavelength according to Meteorological Changes at the airport in an efficient manner. The performance of the system was compared with the solar cell characteristics specification. In addition, for phase synchronization with the PWM voltage type inverter, the grid voltage was detected so as to operate the grid voltage and inverter output in the same phase and to connect the surplus electric power with the system. Finally, by developing a control circuit at the same time from which an excellent dynamic characteristics can be obtained through applying to the airport runway taxi light, it was concluded that a variety of taxi light can be pursued.

Microdrive with high precision and light mass enough to install on mouse head was fabricated for recording the reliable signal of neuron cell to understand the brain study. The proposed microdrive has three H-form PZT actuators and its guide structure. The microdrive operation principle is based on the well known inchworm principle. The synchronization of three PZT actuators is able to produce the linear motion along the guide structure. Our proposed microdrive has a precise accuracy of about 100nm and a long stroke of about 5mm. The electrode which is used for the recording of the action potential of the neuron cell was fixed at one of PZT actuators. The proposed microdrive was suited to acquisition of signals from in vivo extra-cellular single-unit recoding. On the condition of the anesthetized mouse, the single-unit signals could be recorded by using the proposed microdrive. In addition, applying the PZT microdrive to an alert mouse, we try to implant it on a mouse brain skull to explore single neuron firing.

The goal of this research was (1) to describe the conditions and parameters required for the cell cycle synchronization and the accumulation of large number of metaphase cells in maize and other cereal root tips, (2) to isolate intact metaphase chromosomes from root tips suitable for characterization by flow cytometry, and (3) to construct chromosome-specific libraries from maize. Plant metaphase chromosomes have been successfully synchronized and isolated from many cereal root-tips. DNA synthesis inhibitor (hydroxyurea) was used to synchronize cell cycle, follwed by treatement with trifluralin to accumulate metaphase chromosomes. Maize flow karyotypes show substantial variation among inbred lines. thish variation should be sueful in isolating individual chromosome types. In addition, flow cytometry is a useful method to measure DNA content of individual chromosomes in a genotyps, and to detect chromosomal variations. Individual chromosome peaks have been sorted from the maize hybrid B73/Mol7. Libraries were generated form the DOP-PCR amplification product from each peak. To date, we have analyzed clones from a library constructed from the maize chromosome 1 peak. Hybridization of labeled genomic DNA to clone inserts indicated that $24\%,\;18\%,\;and\;58\%$ of the clones were highly repetitive, medium repetitive, and low copy, respectively. Fifty percent of putative low cpoy clones showed single bands on inbred screening, blots, and the remaining $50\%$ were low copy repeats. Single copy clones showing polymorphism will be mapped using recombinant inbred mapping populations. Repetitive clones are being characterized by Southern blot analysis, and will be screened by in situ hybridization for their potential utility as chromosome specific markers.
