  • Kochujang, fermented hot pepper soybean paste, was prepared by traditional method, and irradiated with gamma ray of $^{60}Co{\;}up{\;}to{\;}15{\pm}1.5{\;}kGy$ for confirming main factor of kochujang fermentation. Nonirradiated (control) and irradiated samples kochujang were fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ and analyzed biochemical properties including enzyme activities and viable cell count during fermentation for 60 days. The total viable count in irradiated kochujang decreased to $10^4{\;}CFU/g$ which was $10^8{\;}CFU/g$ in the control. Because of a little changing enzyme activities of ${\alpha}{\cdot}{\beta}{\;}amylase$ and acid neutral protease by irradiation at the above level, amino type nitrogen which is the main quality reference of kochujang was comparable to the control. By irradiation, gas production was completely stopped which is one of biggest problems during distribution of kochujang. Total volume of gas produced at $25^{\circ}C$ from the control kochujang was 453 mL/100 g which was composed of over 90% of $CO_2$. The odor of irradiated kochujang was inferior to the control which seemed to be related to reduced microbial populations.

  • The analysis of traditional process for a Korean puffed rice snack (Yukwa) is needed to develop an advanced process for Yukwa-making. Steeping and punching (Koarichigi) processes, consume time and labor in Yukwa-making, were analyzed on this study. Steeping of waxy rice at $15^{\circ}C$ for 3 days was required to equilibrate moisture absorption in waxy rice kernel. However, steeping for more than 6 days was required soft texture and small air cell distribution of Yukwa. Protein content at pericarp on endosperm of waxy rice kernel was decreased and starch granule was damaged during steeping. RVA paste viscosity was the highest at 6 day steeping after than decreased. Expansion ratio of Yukwa was increased with the increase in steeping time. Air bubbles in dough after punching were uniformly distributed and kneading energy input was decreased with the increase in steeping time. Soft texture, unique texture of Yukwa could be controlled by controlling steeping time and kneading energy input during punching process.

  • The role of short fibre pulp - Mixed Harwood, Eucalyptus, Aspen, Birch, etc for the manufacture of different grades of paper is very well recognized. At the same time, lots of efforts are in progress to maximize the advantages while preserving their own special property. Bleached Acacia Kraft Pulp (BAKP) is comparatively new entry but gained quick recognition. BAKP was introduced to the world market by South East Asian suppliers in the late 1990's. This paper discusses in detail the role and opportunities of use of short fibre pulps. A logical technical comparison has been made between BAKP and another short fibre grades. BAKP being a short, thin-walled fibre shows several similarities with Eucalyptus pulp in terms of good bulk and stiffness. Refining energy and strength properties are very similar, but the shorter fibres and thinner cell walls give an outstanding opacity and formation compared to other commercial short fibre pulps. The collapsed and band-shaped nature gives a matchless smoothness, enabling less calendaring and exceptional printing properties. BAKP is shown to give several advantages to fine paper manufactures, compared with a number of established short fibre pulps such as Brazilian and Chilean Eucalyptus, Canadian Aspen and Indonesian Mixed Hardwood. It is important to consider refining and calendaring conditions to achieve optimum performance. For outer layers of multiply board, Acacia gives excellent coverage due to its high opacity and uniform fibre distribution. Its low roughness property gives improved printability. For tissue products, Acacia gives unique property of superior softness both in terms of hand feel and bulk softness. The high fibre population gives an impression of much higher quality due to the higher opacity and good formation.

  • A comparative micromorphology of petal and sepal of 15 species of Lycopus was undertaken to assess their usefulness in species identification and to evaluate their significance in the taxonomy using scanning electron microscope and stereo microscope. Five types of trichome are found within the genus: unicellular cylindrical trichome, unicellular trichome with papillae, simple multicellular trichome, capitate glandular trichome, and peltate glandular trichome. The types, distribution, and density of the trichomes show considerable variation among the taxa. The distributional pattern of the unicellular cylindrical trichomes on inner side of corolla is differed among the investigated taxa, and can be classified into four patterns. The apex shape of sepal and the incised position of calyx are also various and be recognizedas four patterns. The shape of cell composing in both outer and inner sides of petal and sepal are shown variously. Finally, the taxonomic significance of micromorphology of the petal and sepal in identification and elucidation of the genus Lycopus, especially among the species is also briefly discussed.

  • The cellular rubber products for industrial purpose have been applied in many fields such as auto-motive parts, ship-building, machinery, sports goods, diving suit or interior housings etc. The purpose of this dissertation is to study the physical properties of celluar rubber products particulary for those elastomers such as EPDM, CR and NBR with heat resistance property, weather proofness, and oil resistance characteristics respectively, aiming at improving their quality, and renovating the manufacturing know-how which is beyond our technical power at the present time in Korea. In order to meet this requirement an ideal recipe is being shown for the three elastomers, and also a practical recipe which is easily available in terms of compounding ingredients in domestic market has set up as shown in Table 1. for the investigation of vulcanization characteristics by means of Rheometer. The optimum Mooney viscosity of compounded rubber was found to be approximately $ML_{1+4}(100^{\circ}C)$ $30\sim45$. Excess mustication makes a dispersion of ingredients worse, consequently it causes deformation of shapes and heterogenous cell distribution. In other words the articles are rejected because of its insufficient workmanship. The results of physical properties of the products are indicated in Table 3. It has shown that the quality meet requirement when tested in accordance with ASTM D572, 573 and D 395. The test results o CR/IR blends in terms of hardness, volume change by blowing, tensile strength and elongation have been shown.

  • In this study, after the target basin was divided into both overland and channel grids, the travel time from center of each grid cell to watershed's outlet was calculated based on the manning equation. Through this process, volumetric discharge was calculated according to the isochrones and finally, the direct runoff hydrograph was estimated considering watershed's hydrodynamic characteristics. Sanseong subwatershed located in main stream of Bocheong basin was selected as a target basin. The model parameters are only two: area threshold and channel velocity correction factor; the optimized values were estimated at 3,800 and 3.3, respectively. The developed model based on the tuned parameters led to well-matching results between observed and calculated hydrographs (mean of absolute error of peak discharge: 3.41%, mean of absolute error of peak time: 0.67 hr). Moreover, the analysis results regarding histogram of travel time-contribution area demonstrates that the proposed model characterizes relatively well hydrodynamic characteristics of the catchment due to effective rainfall.

  • Portal vein provides about three-fourths of liver's blood supply. Portal vein is formed behind the neck of pancreas, at the level of the second lumbar vertebra and formed from the convergence of superior mesenteric and splenic veins. The purpose of this study is to review the normal distribution and variation, morphometry of portal vein and its branches for their implication in liver surgery and preoperative portal vein embolization. It is also helpful for radiologists while performing radiological procedures. A total of fresh 40 livers with intact splenic and superior mesenteric vein were collected from the mortuary of Forensic Department, JSS Medical College and Mysuru Medical College. The silicone gel was injected into the portal vein and different segments were identified and portal vein variants were noted. The morphometry of portal vein was measured by using digital sliding calipers. The different types of portal vein segmental variants were observed. The present study showed predominant type I in 90% cases, type II 7.5% cases, and type III 2.5% cases. Mean and standard deviation (SD) of length of right portal vein among males and females were $2.096{\pm}0.602cm$ and $1.706{\pm}0.297cm$, respectively. Mean and SD of length of left portal vein among males and females were $3.450{\pm}0.661cm$ and $3.075{\pm}0.632cm$, respectively. The difference in the Mean among the males and females with respect to length of right portal vein and left portal vein was found to be statistically significant (P=0.010). Prior knowledge of variations regarding the formation, termination and tributaries of portal vein are very helpful and important for surgeons to perform liver surgeries like liver transplantation, segmentectomy and for Interventional Radiologists.

  • The dog frontal sinus may represent an alternative model dental implant research; its topographical resemblance to the maxillary sinus renders it a potentially favorable experimental environment. The aim of this study was thus to elucidate the anatomical configuration of the canine frontal sinus and histological characteristics, and to determine whether it could be a new canine experimental model for dental implant research. Twenty-four sides of canine frontal bones were harvested. The distance from the nasion to the emerging point of the lateral aspect of the canine frontal sinus was measured with the aid of Lucion software. The thicknesses of the canine frontal sinus wall were measured, and the two specimens stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The mean distance from the nasion to the emerging point of the lateral aspect of the canine frontal sinus was 16.0 mm. The mean thicknesses of the canine frontal bone at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 mm lateral to the midsagittal plane were 2.3, 2.7, 3.2, 3.8, and 3.7 mm, respectively. The canine frontal sinus was lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. These data suggest that the canine frontal sinus is a suitable alternative to the canine maxillary sinus as a model for studying various sinus augmentation protocols.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of Hataedock treatment using Coptidis Rhizome and Glycyrrhiza Uralensis (CG) mixed extract in allergic rhinitis induced NC/Nga mice. We divided NC/Nga mice into 3 groups as follows; allergic rhinitis-induced group after CG Hataedock treatment (CGT, n=10), no treatment group (Ctrl), allergic rhinitis elicited group (ARE). To induce allergic rhinitis, NC/Nga mice of 3 weeks age were sensitized on 7, 8 and 9week by Ovalbumin (OVA) antigen in intranasal space. Hataedock using CG extract was administered on week 3 in allergic rhinitis-induced group (CGT) after Hataedock treatment. To identify distribution of Interlukin (IL)-4, Cluster of differentiation 40 (CD40), high-affinity IgE receptor ($Fc{\varepsilon}RI$), substance P, Matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP-9), Nuclear $factor-{\kappa}B$ ($NF-{\kappa}B$) p65, Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and Cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2), we used histological examination. CGT significantly inhibited IL-4 and CD40 response compared with ARE. The reduction of Th2 cytokine expression decreased inflammatory mediators such as $Fc{\varepsilon}RI$, substance P, MMP-9, $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65, iNOS and COX-2. Such immunological improvement induced reduction of respiratory epithelial damage and mucin secretion in goblet cell. These results indicate that Hataedock treatment suppresses allergic rhinitis through modulating of Th2 responses and diminishing various inflammatory mediators in nasal mucosal tissue. It might have potential applications for prevention and treatment of allergic rhinitis.

  • The microencapsulation of nifedipine (NF) with 4 wt% of poly(${\varepsilon}-caprolactone$) (PCL)/polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP) or PCL/polyethylene glycol (PEG) was carried out by solvent evaporation method in oil in water emulsion system to investigate the effect of PVP and PEG addition on drug release behavior of the microcapsules. The PVA (emulsifier) concentration of 1.0 wt% was chosen for the formation of PCL capsule having an average size of $154{\pm}25{\mu}m$ due to nearly spherical shape with a narrow size distribution. As PCL/PVP and PCL/PEG ratios were raised from 10/0 to 6/4, the capsule size increased gradually from $154{\pm}25{\mu}m$ to $236{\pm}32{\mu}m$ and $248{\pm}56{\mu}m$, respectively. The drug release rate of PCL/PVP and PCL/PEG capsules increased dramatically from 0 to 4 h at the beginning and then reached the plateau region from 20 h. As the concentration of PVP or PEG increased, the amount of drug release increased, suggesting that the larger capsule size was attributed to the higher drug content. However, the drug release behavior remained almost constant. The PCL capsules exhibited no evidence of causing cell lysis or toxicity regardless of NF loading, implying that the microcapsules are clinically suitable for use as drug delivery systems.
