Concentration and Geochemical Phases of Heavy Metals in Marine Sediments in the Vicinity of the Coal-fired Power Plant of Korea (석탄화력발전소 주변해역 퇴적물 내의 중금속원소의 함량과 지화학적 존재형태)

  • Marine surface sediments in the vicinity of Samcheonpo coal-fired power plant were analyzed by a total analysis($HF+HNO_3+HClO_4$) and sequential extraction procedure for heavy metals in order to investigate the total concentrations and geochemical phases of heavy metals. The result showed that the concentrations of Cr, Cu, Fe and Zn were within ranges typical for coastal areas, which reflected the mineralogical composition of the sediments in the studied area. However, the distributions of Cd, Co, Mn, Ni and Pb were rather different from the former, indicating that these heavy metals had a different origin, or that they were affected by a different geochemical mechanism. Chemical partitioning of heavy metals using sequential extraction procedure revealed that Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn were significantly bound to the residual phases of the sediments, whereas carbonate phases contained considerable amounts of Mn. The significant association of Pb with the exchangeable fraction also indicated that Pb was more mobile and bioavailable than Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn.

[$Ca^{2+}-activated\;Cl^-$ Current in Gastric Antral Myocytes

  • The whole-cell mode of the patch clamp technique was used to study $Ca^{2+}-activated\;Cl^-\;current$ $(I_{Cl_{Ca}})$ in gastric antral myocytes. Extracellular application of caffeine evoked $Ca^{2+}-activated\;current$. In order to isolate the chloride current from background current, all known systems were blocked with specific blockers. The current-voltage relationship of caffeine-induced current showed outward rectification and it reversed at around $E_{Cl^-}$. The shift of reversal potential upon the alteration of external and internal chloride concentrations was well fitted with results which were calculated by the Nernst equation. Extracellular addition of N-phenylanthranilic acid and niflumic acid which are known anion channel blockers abolished the caffeine induced current. Intracellular application of a high concentration of EGTA also abolished this current. Application of c-AMP, c-GMP, heparin, or $AIF^-_4$ made no remarkable changes to this current. Sodium replacement with the impermeable cation N-methylglucamine or with $Cd^{2+}$ rarely affected this current. From the above results it is suggested that the caffeine induced current was a $Cl^-$ current and it was activated by intracellular $Ca^{2+}$.

  • Natural zeolites have exhibited high sorption capacity for inorganic cations including heavy metals and ammonium. Moreover, they were proven to be effective for environmental applications such as permeable barriers for controlling the spread of cation-contaminated groundwater. However zeolites have little or no affinity for anionic species like chromium, as they possess a net negative structural charge. To achieve the simultaneous sorption for anionic contaminants, surfactant-modified zeolite (SMZ) has been employed as the possible sorbents. Current study focuses on simultaneous removal of heavy metals having different ionic form in aqueous solution, cadmium (C $d^{2+}$) and chromium (Cr $O_{4}$$^{2-}$), using newly developed materials, ZanF. ZanF, a potential alternative to SMZ, was derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed to estimate the removal efficiency of ZanF at different conditions. Under different pH ranging from 2 to 6, removal efficiency was investigated. And C $d^{2+}$ removal efficiency was estimated by varying background concentration of Cr $O_{4}$$^{2-}$, and vice versa. With the test results, ZanF was expected to be a possible reactive materials alternative to SMZ in permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) for treating the contaminated groundwater with cationic and anionic heavy metals.als.

Estimated Toxic Metal Concentrations in Riverbank Soil of the Han and Anyang Rivers (서울한강 둔치 및 안양천 하류부 둔치주변 토양오염 조사연구)

  • Heavy metal contamination of soil and water from industrial sources remains a worldwide environmental concern. Concentrations of toxic metals were measured in soil from banks of the Han and Anyang rivers. Pre-monsoon samples contained the highest heavy metal concentrations (Cu > As > Pb > Cd > $Cr^{6+}$; up to 57.80, 38.23, 25.43, 2.21, 0.32 mg/kg, respectively), but concentrations decreased at all sites during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. Higher heavy metal concentrations in pre-monsoon samples may be attributed to dust pollution, especially from roads near the river. A gradual reduction in heavy metal concentrations during the rainy season may be due to washing out. The high concentration of metals could cause health problems, especially in residential areas.

Evaluation of Stored Rainwater Quality at Galmoe Middle School Rainwater Harvesting System (갈뫼중학교 빗물이용시설에서의 저장 빗물수질평가)

  • One of the major obstacles confronted in promoting the rainwater harvesting is the concerns of acid rain and heavy metals. Although there are many data concerning the quality of rainwater precipitation for the study of acid rain, the study on the quality of stored rainwater has been limited. In this study, we monitored the quality of stored rainwater at Galmoe middle school, where a rainwater harvesting system is installed and in use for more than two years. We measured water quality parameters such as pH, Electro Conductivity(EC), Dissolved Oxygen(DO), and some metals (aluminium (Al), chromium(Cr), manganese(Mn), zinc(Zn), copper(Cu), arsenic(As), cadmium(Cd), lead(Pb)). The monitoring period was during one year from September 9th 2003 to August 5th 2004. It was observed that the average pH of stored rainwater is neutral. DO is similar to tap water and EC is lower than tap water. Metal Concentrations are within the concentration specified in Drinking Water Quality Standard. Overall, the stored rainwater quality is good enough for sundry use and there's no threat of acid rain and air pollution, if the rainwater harvesting system is well designed and maintained.

Analysis of Heavy Metal Concentration on Working Clothes for Waste Incinerating Workers (생활폐기물 소각장 작업복의 중금속 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of an experimental protective clothing material with regard to comfort and isolation from the hazardous heavy metals produced in municipal waste incineration. An analysis was conducted on the total concentrations of heavy metals in some parts such as surface, middle layer, and interior for the treated fabric, and the untreated one, and working clothes. We conclude that the processed fabric with charcoal for working clothes showed the least exposure to heavy metals of the three. Working clothes worn by workers during waste incineration were much more contaminated than the untreated and treated materials. The material of working clothes could be chosen according to the function with regard to its original chemical characteristics, which are the proper results of the dyeing process. The processed fabric material has high degrees of moisture regain, thermal insulation, water vapor penetration, and antibacterial function; consequently, it is much more comfortable to wear. The fabric material proposed in this research contributed much more to blocking heavy metal concentrations (such as Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn) than did the fabric of working clothes at present. Consequently, we strongly suggest that the material of working clothes be upgraded by adopting the above-mentioned charcoal-processed fabric. Materials of working clothes must be improved to increase comfort and prevent harmful gas, flying dust, and heavy metals from permeating the fabrics.

Purification and Characterization of Mouse Liver Rhodanese

  • Rhodanese from mouse liver was purified to near homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation, CM-Sephadex ion exchange, hydroxyapatite and Sephacryl S-200-HR gel filtration chromatographies with a purification of 776 folds. The molecular weight was determined by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration and found to be 34.8 KDa. SOS-PAGE showed molecular weight 34 KDa and two identical subunits splitting by aging for 3 weeks at $-70^{\circ}C$ the molecular weight of which was 17 KDa. The optimal pH of enzyme activity was 9.4 and the pI value of the enzyme was 6.6. Rhodanese showed the optimal reaction temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and near linear increasing pattern until 10 min. incubation. $K_m$ values of rhodanese for KCN and $Na_{2}S_{2}O_{3}$ as substrates were 12.5 mM and 8.3 mM, respectively. Rhodanese activity was inhibited by more than 70% at a concentration of 100 ${\mu}M$ of $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. Other metal ions, such as $Mn^{2+}$, $Mg^{2-}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}$ showed no effect on rhodanese activity.

The removal of heavy metals by crab shell in aqueous solution (게 껍질을 이용한 수중의 중금속 제거)

  • In order to examine the availability and effectiveness of crab shell for the removal of heavy metals in aqueous solution the crab shell was compared with cation exchange resin(CER), zeolite granular activated carbon (GAC) and powdered activated carbon(PAC) on aspects of heavy metal removal capacity rate and efficiency. In the removal of Pb, Cd and Cr, the heavy metal removal capacity of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents (CER, zeolite, GAC, PAC) and the order of heavy metal removal capacity was crab shell>CER>zeolite>PAC GAC. However in the removal of Cu, the result of crab shell was slightly lower than that of CER. The initial heavy metal removal rate was affected by the sorts of sorbents and metals. In all heavy metals the heavy metal removal rate of crab shell was higher than those of any other sorbents. Under the heavy metal concentration of 1.0 mmole/$\ell$ the heavy metal removal efficiency of crab shell was maintained as 93~100% which was much higher than those of any other sorbents.

  • A study of stream pollution caused by construction of the Industrial Complex in Agricultural Area of Chung Chong Nam Do were descrived here. The five main results of this studies are summerized. First, since 1988, among the companies moved in the industrial complex area, the number of electric and electronic companies have increased compared with food companies requiring much BOD. This Is very desirable to reduce the water pollution. Second, the average Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) of Masan stream was the highest and it was decreased in the order of Yudug, Jo and Jungan stream. Third, although the concentration of heavy metals such as Cd and C $r^{6+}$ are not off the limit and the amount of it is small, it is desirable to introduce a chemical process to remove these metals. Fourth, since the wastewater from industrial complex area is the major factor in stream pollution, the laws associated with environmental protection should be enforced even then if the Industrial complex area with food and chemical companies produce wastewater less than 500ton/day. Fifth, it is required to improve a facilities which separete living wastewater from inderstrial wastewater In Kaya-gok and Nojang industrial complex areas.

Characteristics of Heavy Metals and Benthic Foraminifera on Surface Sediments in Masan Bay and Gadeog Channel, Korea (마산만과 가덕수로 표층퇴적물의 중금속 원소와 저서성 유공충 특성)

  • Nine surface sediments from Masan Bay and Gadeog Channel were taken for grain size and geochemical and foraminiferal analyses in August 2002. The sediments consist of mud with 7.29-8.54 $\phi$ in mean grain size. Average concentrations of Al, Fe and Mn are higher in Gadeog Channel than those in Masan Bay. On the other hand, average concentrations of Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni and V are higher in Masan Bay than those in the channel. The latter group of elements show the highest concentration at station M4, off the outfall of treated wastewater disposal. Eighty-one foraminiferal species are identified in total assemblages, including 21 species of living populations. The number of individuals, species number, species diversity and equitability in Masan Bay have lower values than those in Gadeog Channel. The foraminiferal fauna off the outfall is relatively poor. Compared to geochemical and foraminiferal data obtained in 1996, heavy metals are more enriched, and the characteristics of foraminifera are little changed. These features indicate that the pollution of Masan Bay has not been reduced.
