  • Most of the recent for the flow field hydrofoil in partially cavitating condition are the ones which are linearized, and the problem of cavity end region for hydrofoil is not verified. This paper deals with a study on characteristics of end region flow field for partially cavitating hydrofoil by using a characteristics of shear turbulence flow and nonlinear cavity flow theory. The results obtained as follows : 1) Shear layer thickness is decreased gradually going to the end section of hydrofoil. When attack angle is large, it is appeared largely at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing. 2) The fluctuation velocity of a second-degree relative direction have minimum value at the front of hydrofoil or at the end of hydrofoil. The difference for the validity of attack angle is appeared largely at the surrounding of .chi.$_{e}$ point. 3) The fluctuation velocity of transverse direction decrease from the maximum thickness of cavitation to the end of hydrofoil, but it undergoes largely the effect of pressure recovery. The difference is larger at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing than at the of hydrofoil. 4) The distribution of Reynolds stress have maximum values at the region of partial cavitation after its collapsing and the end of foil, and the larger attack angle, the larger the distribution of value.e.

  • The cavity oscillation with swirling flow in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation. Several types of fluctuation were observed in the experiment, including the cavitation surge caused by the diffuser effect and the vortex precession by the swirling flow. Both cavitation surge and vortex precession were simulated by CFD. Detailed flow structure was examined through flow visualization and CFD.

  • In practice, cavitation phenomena occur in unbounded flows. However, the wall effect is unavoidable during experiments at a closed section such as a cavitation tunnel. Especially, supercavity generated behind a cavitator is relatively large and thick, so that geometric and dynamic characteristics of the cavity are affected by the tunnel wall. In order to apply experimental results into the unbounded flow field, physical correlations are necessary. In this paper, we proposed an image method based on a potential flow to simulate the wall effect. Considering two-dimensional wedge-shaped bodies, configurations and drag characteristics of the cavity were examined according to the distance ratio to the wall surface. The results were compared and verified with existing theoretical and experimental results.

  • The research performed in this paper was carried out to investigate the numerical analysis of the sheet cavitation on marine propeller. The method is boundary element method (BEM). Using the Green's theorem, the velocity potential is expressed as an integral equation on the surface of the propeller by hyperboloid-shaped elements. Employing the boundary conditions, the potential is determined via solving the resulting system of equations. For the case study, a DTMB4119 propeller is analyzed with and without cavitating conditions. The pressure distribution and hydrodynamic performance curves of the propellers as well as cavity thickness obtained by numerical method are calculated and compared by the experimental results. Specifically in this article cavitation changes are investigate in both the radial and chord direction. Thus, cross flow variation has been studied in the formation and growth of sheet cavitation. According to the data obtained it can be seen that there is a better agreement and less error between the numerical results gained from the present method and Fluent results than Hong Sun method. This confirms the accurate estimation of the detachment point and the cavity change in radial direction.

  • The spray characteristics and drop size measurements have been experimentally studied in liquid jets injected into subsonic crossflow. With water as fuel injection velocity, injection angle and atomize. internal flows were varied to provide of jet operation conditions. The injector internal flow was classified as three modes such as a non-cavitation flow, cavitation, and hydraulic flip flows. Pulsed Shadowgraph Photography measurement was used to determine the spatial distribution of the spray droplet diameter in a subsonic crossflow of air. And this study also obtains the SMD (Sauter Mean Diameters) distribution by using Planar Liquid Laser Induced Fluorescence technique. The objectives of this research are get a droplet distributions and drop size measurements of each condition and compare with the other flow effects. As the result, This research has been showned that droplet size were spatially dependent on air-stream velocity, fuel injection velocity, injection angle effects, and normalized distance from the injector exit length(x/d, y/d). There are also different droplet size characteristics between cavitation, hydraulic flip and the non-cavitation flows.

  • This study highlights especially the mechanism of vortex cavitation occurrence from the end of the suction duct in a double-suction volute pump and pump oscillation which causes cavitation noise from the pump. In this study, full 3D numerical simulations have been performed using a commercial code inside the pump from the inlet of suction duct to the outlet of delivery duct. The numerical model is based on a combination of multiphase flow equations with the truncated version of the Rayleigh-Plesset model predicting the complicated growth and collapse process of cavity bubbles. The experimental investigations have also been performed on the cavitating flow with flow visualization to evaluate the numerical results.

  • The horn and movable parts around the gap of the conventional semi-spade rudder are visualized by high speed CCD camera with the frame rate of 4000 fps (frame per second) to study the unsteady cavity pattern on the rudder surface and gap. In addition, the pressure measurements are conducted on the rudder surface and inside the gap to find out the characteristics of the flow behavior. The rudder without propeller wake is tested at the range of $1.0{\leq}{\sigma}_v\;1.6$ and at the rudder deflection angle of $-8{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}10^{\circ}$. The time resolved cavity images are captured and show strong cavitation around the rudder gap in all deflection angles. As the deflection angle gets larger, the flow separated from the horn surface increases the strength of cavitation. The accelerated flow along the horn decreases its pressure and the separated flow from the horn increases the pressure abruptly. The pressure distribution inside the gap reveals the flow moving from the pressure to suction side. In the negative deflection angle, the turning area on the movable part initiates the flow separation and cavitation on it.

  • Recently, as container ships become larger and faster, rudder cavitations are more frequently observed near the gap between the horn and rudder plates of the ships to cause serious damages to the rudder surface of the ship. The authors already have suggested through a series of model experiments and numerical computations that employment of an appropriate blocking device for gap flow may retard the gap cavitation. For examples, a cam device installed near the outer edges of the vertical gap or a water-injection device combined with a pair of half-round bars installed inside the gap can considerably reduce the gap cavitation. However, it is also found that effective blocking of the flow through the vertical gap results in growth of the cavitation near the horizontal gap instead. In the present study, effectiveness of the simultaneous blocking of the flow through the horizontal and vertical gaps of a horn type rudder in minimizing the damage by gap cavitation is studied. Additional blocking disks are inserted inside the horizontal gaps on the top and bottom of the pintle block and numerical computations are carried out to confirm the combined effect of the blocking devices.
