In order to investigate the influence of thru holes near leading edge of model propeller on cavitation behavior, a model propeller with thru holes was manufactured and tested at Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT). The pressure distribution around the thru hole on propeller blade was numerically calculated to help understand the local flow characteristics related to cavitation behavior. The model propeller is a five bladed propeller which has 2 blades with thru holes and 3 blades with smooth surface. The cavitation observation tests were conducted at angles of $0^{\circ}$ & $6^{\circ}$ using an inclined-shaft dynamometer in LCT. There are big difference on the suction side cavitation behavior each other due to the existence of thru hole. While the blades with thou holes start generation of the sheet cavitation from the leading edge on the suction side, the blades with smooth surface generate the cloud cavitation from the mid-chord. Cavitation on the blades with thru holes shows more similar behavior to those of the full-scale propeller of which the pipe line for air injection is closed. The numerical analysis result shows that the sharp pressure drop occurs around thru holes on the blade. Consequently, the thru hole around leading edge stimulates the cavitation occurrence and stabilizes the cavitation behavior. Based on these results, the effect of thru holes on propeller cavitation behavior behind a model ship should be studied in the future.

In order to investigate cavitation performance for the azimuth thruster in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the cavitation test apparatus was designed and manufactured. Generally the model scale is determined by the pod dynamometer with about 70mm diameter. Recently as ships with azimuth thruster have become bigger, the problem of the model ship installation was occurred. The model ship with pod dynamometer couldn't be installed in the LCT test section. The cavitation test apparatus and technique which can conduct the cavitation test without pod dynamometer were developed. The cavitation tests were conducted in torque identity method instead of thrust identity method. The target ship with azimuth thruster is 18K LNG bunkering vessel. As the full-scale ship test was conducted, the model cavitation tests were conducted at the same operating conditions. The fluctuating pressure levels of the full-scale ship were compared to those of the model tests. Another model cavitation test was conducted in the foreign institute and the cavitation observation results were compared to those of LCT. Through the comparison with the existing results, it is thought that the cavitation test for the azimuth thruster can be conducted in torque identity method.

We developed a 'multi-point vibration acceleration method' for accurately predicting the cavitation intensity in pumps. Pressure wave generated by cavitation bubble collapse propagates and causes pump vibration. We measured vibration accelerations at several points on a casing, suction and discharge pipes of centrifugal and mixed-flow pumps. The measured vibration accelerations scattered because the pressure wave damped differently between the bubble collapse location and each sensor. In a conventional method, experimental constants are proposed without evaluating pressure propagation paths, then, the scattered vibration accelerations cause the inaccurate cavitation intensity. In our method, we formulated damping rate, transmittance of the pressure wave, and energy conversion from the pressure wave to the vibration along assumed pressure propagation paths. In the formulation, we theoretically defined a 'pressure propagation coefficient,' which is a correlation coefficient between the vibration acceleration and the bubble collapse pressure. With the pressure propagation coefficient, we can predict the cavitation intensity without experimental constants as proposed in a conventional method. The prediction accuracy of cavitation intensity is improved based on a statistical analysis of the multi-point vibration accelerations. The predicted cavitation intensity was verified with the plastic deformation rate of an aluminum sheet in the cavitation erosion area of the impeller blade. The cavitation intensities were proportional to the measured plastic deformation rates for three kinds of pumps. This suggests that our method is effective for estimating the cavitation intensity in pumps. We can make a cavitation intensity map by conducting this method and varying the flow rate and the net positive suction head (NPSH). The map is useful for avoiding the operating conditions having high risk of cavitation erosion.
Pumps are essential machinery in the various industries. With the development of high-speed and large-scale pumps, especially high energy density, high requirements have been imposed on the vibration and noise performance of pumps, and cavitation is an important source of vibration and noise excitation in pumps, so it is necessary to improve pumps cavitation performance. The modern pump optimization design method mainly adopts parameterization and artificial intelligence coupling optimization, which requires direct correlation between geometric parameters and pump performance. The existing cavitation performance calculation method is difficult to be integrated into multi-objective automatic coupling optimization. Therefore, a fast prediction method for pump cavitation performance is urgently needed. This paper proposes a novel cavitation prediction method based on impeller pressure isosurface at single-phase media. When the cavitation occurs, the area of pressure isosurface Siso increases linearly with the NPSHa decrease. This demonstrates that with the development of cavitation, the variation law of the head with the NPSHa and the variation law of the head with the area of pressure isosurface are consistent. Therefore, the area of pressure isosurface Siso can be used to predict cavitation performance. For a certain impeller blade, since the area ratio Rs is proportional to the area of pressure isosurface Siso, the cavitation performance can be predicted by the Rs. In this paper, a new cavitation performance prediction method is proposed, and the feasibility of this method is demonstrated in combination with experiments, which will greatly accelerate the pump hydraulic optimization design.
Stainless steel is generally known to have characteristics of excellent corrosion resistance and durability, but in a marine environment it can suffer from localized corrosion due to the breakdown of passivity film due to chloride ion in seawater. Furthermore, the damage behaviors are sped up under a cavitation environment because of complex damage from electrochemical corrosion and cavitation-erosion. In this study the characteristics of electrochemical corrosion and cavitation erosion behavior were evaluated on 16.7Cr-10Ni-2Mo stainless steel under a cavitation environment in natural seawater. The electrochemical experiments have been conducted at both static conditions and dynamic conditions inducing cavitation with different current density parameters. The surface morphology and damage behaviors were compared after the experiment. After the cavitation test with time variables morphological examinations on damaged specimens were analyzed by using a scanning electron microscope and a 3D microscope. the galvanostatic experiment gave a cleaner surface morphology presented with less damage depth at high current density regions. It is due to the effect of water cavitation peening under the cavitation condition. In the cavitation experiment, with amplitude of $30{\mu}m$ and seawater temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, weight loss and cavitation-erosion damage depth were dramatically increased after 5 hours inducing cavitation.

In this study, the amount and frequency characteristics of cloud cavitation formed on a navy ship rudder were investigated through cavitation image processing technique and cavitation noise analysis. A high-speed camera with high time resolution was used to observe the cavitation on a full-spade rudder. The deflection angle range of the full-spade rudder was set to 8 to 15 degrees so that cloud cavitation was generated on the rudder surface. For images taken at 104 fps (frame per second), reference values for detecting cavitation were defined and detected in Red, Green, Blue and Hue, Saturation, Lightness color spaces to quantitatively analyze the amount of cavitation. Intrinsic frequency characteristics of cloud cavitation were detected from the time series data of the amount of cavitation. The frequency characteristics of cloud cavitation obtained by using the image processing technique were found to be the same through the analysis of the noise signal measured by the hydrophone installed on the hull above the rudder, and its peak value was in the frequency band of 30~60Hz.

The pumped storage plant operates with quick change of the discharge as well as quick changes between pump mode and turbine mode. This study focuses on the cavitation analysis of a pump-turbine model because in turbo-machinery, cavitation can reduce the performance and shorten service life. The pump-turbine model system consists of 7 blades, 20 stay vanes (including tongue) and 20 guide vanes. This study adopts the Rayleigh-Plesset model as a cavitation model, which illustrates cavitation by using the air volume fraction method. The pump mode and turbine mode at the operating condition of partial loading, normal and excessive loading are analyzed to investigate the cavitation performance of the pump-turbine. It was observed that this pump-turbine design showed very good cavitation characteristics with no cavitation bubbles in all operating conditions. Overall value of air volume fraction of both mode at different operating condition are lower than 1, which confirms low possibility of cavitation occurrence at current situation.

To investigate the influence of blade profiles on cavitation behavior in impeller of centrifugal pump, a centrifugal pump with five different blade profiles impellers are studied numerically. The impellers with five different blade profiles (single arc, double arcs, triple arcs, logarithmic spiral and linear-variable angle spiral) were designed by the in-house hydraulic design code using geometric parameters of IS 150-125-125 centrifugal pump. The experiments of the centrifugal pump have been conducted to verify numerical simulation model. The numerical results show that the blade profile lines has a weak effect on cavitation inception near blade inlet edge position, however it has the key effect on the development of sheet cavitation in impeller, and also influences the distribution of sheet cavitation in impeller channels. A slight changing of blade setting angle will induce significant difference of cavitation in impeller. The sharp changing of impeller blade setting angle causes obvious cavitation region separation near the impeller inlet close to blade suction surface and much more flow loss. The centrifugal pump with blade profile of setting angle gently changing (logarithmic spiral) has the super cavitation performance, which means smaller critical cavitation number and lower vapor cavity volume fraction at the same conditions.

This study is mainly concerned with phenomenon of cavitation-erosion on the several materials and corrosive liquids which were applied with vibrator(suggested by ASTM G 32, 20KHz, 50$mu extrm{m}$). The maximum erosion rate by cavitation erosion in both of distilled water and sea water appeared to be proportioned to their hardness and tensile strength. Cavitation weight loss and rate of cast iron in sea water condition were greater(approximately 3 times) than that in distilled water condition, however in case of stainless steel and brass the cavitation weight loss of composite materials were not so different in both of their conditions. Cavitation weight loss of composite materials were shown as below on this test, Duratough DL : Weight loss in sea-water condition were greater (approximately 2.3 times) than it's distilled water condition. The main tendency of cavitation erosion for metals appeared that small damaged holes causing by cavitation erosion was observed with radial pattern. On the other hand, the tendency for composites appeared that small damaged holes were observed randomly.
