  • Fire is a continuous threat to FPSO topside modules as large amounts of oil and gas are passing through the modules. As a conventional measure to mitigate structural failure under fire, passive fire protection (PFP) coatings are widely used on main structural members. However, an excessive use of PFP coatings can cause considerable cost for material purchase, installation, inspection and maintenance. Long installation time can be a risk since the work should be done nearly at the last fabrication stage. Thus, the minimal use of PFP can be beneficial to the reduction of construction cost and the avoidance of schedule delay. This paper presents a few case studies on how different applications of PFP have influence on collapse time of a FPSO module structure. A series of heat analysis and thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis are performed for different PFP coatings and the resultant collapse time and the amount of PFP coatings are compared with each other.

  • Forest fire can cause a serious damage to overhead conductors. Therefore, detailed investigation on the changes of mechanical and electrical properties of damaged conductors should be carried out to understand the effect of forest fires on conductors. This is of critical importance in maintaining transmission line safely. This paper examines the changes of mechanical and electrical properties of flame exposed conductor. Tensile strength (TS) decreased according to increase of forest fire temperature and conductivity changed according to forest fire temperature. Specimens were aluminum conductors of aluminium conductor steel reinforced (ACSR) 410, 240, 480 $mm^2$. In this paper, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of forest fires exposed overhead conductors depending on the diameter of aluminum conductors are presented. It was possible to estimate the degree of deterioration caused by forest fires. The detailed results are given in the paper.

  • Oil tank fires need to be suppressed differently from other oil-related fires, due to the high-temperature flames and hot updraft above the tank, in the former case, that cause the destruction of large amounts of foam. We studied high-capacity foam discharge systems based on the standards of the American Petroleum Institute (API), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), British Standard European Norm (BS EN), and the laws of Japan. The performance of a high-capacity foam discharge system was measured by conducting real fire experiments with model oil tanks. We concluded that lightweight and easily movable high-capacity foam discharge systems should be urgently introduced in domestic operations. Additionally, the obstacles faced by major tanks, such as long-distance installation of large-diameter fire hoses and narrowing of firefighting spaces, should be resolved depending on the conditions of the site.

  • The fact that the smoke hinders evacuation and fire-fighting activities as well as becomes the major cause of life casualty emphasizes the importance of smoke control system. As one of the fire safety standards designed to secure the smoke safety, NFSC501A (Design Guide for Smoke Control System of Special Evacuation Stairwell and Lobby) has been proposed, preventing smoke from penetrating into the smoke-free escape route by raising the pressure of the smoke control zone higher than fire area. For model building of 20 stories, pressurization system was designed according to standard and pressure field of compartments in whole building induced by pressurization system was analyzed using the network model.

  • The modern trend for high-rise buildings makes the application of fire protection systems difficult and the current systems have a limitation to provide appropriate functions. Indoor hydrant systems are fire suppression systems installed in most buildings that require valves, hoses, and nozzles to be manually operated in the event of a fire. Therefore, high discharge pressure can cause difficulty in the operation of indoor fire hydrant systems and damage to hoses due to a high reaction force. To prevent these problems, the pressure is reduced and decompression valves are commonly installed at angle valves which are the discharge points of indoor hydrants. In the case of high-rise buildings, however, there are cases where stable operation is difficult even with the installation of decompression valves. To verify this, we have measured the decompression performance by the orifice diameter and calculated the reaction force. Results of the study showed that decompression valves need to be produced in different sizes to provide stable decompression where high pressure is required as in high-rise buildings.

  • As usage of electric power is increased, the electric fire accident occurrences are growing, too. According to statistics it can be known that electric fire occupies the most weight. However, the method that can detect electric fire accurately is not being developed yet. This paper analyzes the cause of electric fire and the characteristics of Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter(AFCI). First this paper compares AFCI with existing molded-case circuit breaker and finds the hazards caused by arc through power calculation and compares with danger by short circuit. And we suggest the necessity of AFCI through studying relationship of AFCI installation and societal cost.

  • ESS refers to a device that can store electrical energy produced by renewable energy generation, etc. and use it when necessary. Lithium-ion batteries are composed of high energy density and combustible electrolyte, so once ignited, it is difficult to extinguish. Many studies have been conducted to solve the problem of the battery itself as the cause of the fire. However, there is also a problem with the structure in which ESS(hereinafter referred to as ESS storage) is installed itself. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide data to solve the problems related to ignition and fire spread due to the problem of ESS storage. In summer, the internal temperature of the ESS storage rises due to solar radiation to trigger a fire, so it is necessary to prevent an internal temperature rise due to solar radiation. Research on standards, materials used, structures, etc. for ESS storage and new regulations are required.

  • This paper is a purpose to study the failure example for heavy-duty vehicle fire. The first example, the researcher found the engine over-heating phenomenon causing a coolant leakage by the sealing poor of head-gasket because of D-ring part deformation contacting with cylinder liner top-part and cylinder head. He certified a fire breakout by short transferred to surrounding wiring of air-cleaner. The second example, a brake lining by return fault of break operating S cam causing with much wear of a rear 4 wheel brake lining repeatably was worn by friction. In the long run, it became the cause of fire. The third example, the researcher knew the fire cause was came about the short of wire by overload of tilting motor when the driver tilted up the cap to inspect a engine. Therefore, a heavy-duty fire must minimize the fire occurrence by thorough controlling.

  • Forest fire occurrence in Korea is highly related to human activities and its spatial distribution shows a strong spatial dependency with cluster pattern. In this study, we analyzed spatial distribution pattern of forest fire with point pattern analysis considering spatial dependency. Distributional pattern was derived from Ripley's K-function according to causes and distances. Spatially clustered intensity was found out using Kernel intensity estimation. As a result, forest fires in Korea show clustered pattern, although the degrees of clustering for each cause are different. Furthermore, spatial clustering pattern can be classified into two groups in terms of degrees of clustering and distance. The first group shows the national-wide cluster pattern related to the human activity near forests, such as human-induced accidental fire in mountain and field incineration. Another group shows localized cluster pattern which is clustered within a short distance. It is associated with the smoker fire, arson, accidental by children. The range of localized clustering was 30 km. Beyond of this range, the patterns of forest fire became random distribution gradually. Kernel intensity analysis showed that the latter group, which have localized cluster pattern, was occurred in near Seoul with high densed population.
