  • In Korea, diabetes mellitus, which causes micro and macrovascular complications, has been rapidly increasing during recent decades and has become a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 12.4% in 2011 and that of prediabetes, a condition of high risk for developing diabetes mellitus, is 1.5- to 3-fold greater than that of diabetes. The diabetes prevention programs in other countries were shown to reduce or delay progression from prediabetes to diabetes mellitus. However, these results are not applicable to Korean people because of genetic and environmental differences. Therefore, we need to plan and perform a diabetes prevention study in Korean. Based on these results, we should design intervention tools for a Korean diabetes prevention program. We can consider several preventive interventions with lifestyle modification suitable for Korean people and pharmacologic treatments such as metformin or alpha-glucosidase inhibitor.

  • Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has become one of the major public health problems for both mothers and children globally. Internationally, the frequency of excess weight and obesity has risen dramatically in women of childbearing age. There seems to be a greater risk of having GDM in overweight or obese women, resulting in problems during pregnancy, birth and neonatal development. Hospital management is a problem for obese pregnant females with GDM and places extra burdens on the healthcare sector. GDM can result in possible risks to the wellbeing of the mother, fetus, and infant, as well as clinically significant negative effects on the mental health of the mother. For females and their developing babies, diabetes may cause problems during pregnancy. Unsatisfactory diabetes control enhances the risk of complications and other birth related issues during pregnancy. It may also cause a woman to suffer severe complications. Numerous maternal and fetal effects are associated with GDM and multiple detection and management methods are also pursued globally in order to reduce the burden of health. An overview of gestational diabetes treatment is given in this review.

  • Recently, the number of people visiting the hospital is increasing due to diabetes. According to the Korean Diabetes Association, statistically, 1 in 7 adults over the age of 30 are suffering from diabetes. As such, diabetes is one of the most common diseases among modern people. In this paper, in addition to blood sugar, which is widely used for diabetes awareness, BMI, which is known to be related to diabetes, triglycerides and cholesterol that cause various complications in diabetics it was studied using random forest techniques and decision trees known to be effective for classification. The importance of each element was confirmed using the results and characteristic importance derived using two techniques. Through this, we studied the diabetes-related relationship between BMI, triglyceride, and cholesterol as well as blood sugar, a factor that diabetic patients should pay much attention to.

  • Diabetes Mellitus (DM), often simply referred to as diabetes, has developed into a major health concern affecting more than 200 million people worldwide with approximately 4 million deaths per year attributed to the presence of the disease. Diabetes mellitus is categorized as Type 1 and Type 2, where Type 1 diabetes represents a lack of insulin production, and Type 2 diabetes is characterized by a relative lack of insulin receptor (i.e., decreased sensitivity to the effect of insulin) and cased by a complex interplay between genetic factors and environmental factors. Up to date, various studies on the pathology and mechanism in terms of genetic experiments have been conducted and approximately hundreds of genes were reported as diabetes mellitus associated genes. At this point, to support studies on the cause and mechanism of diabetes mellitus, an efficient database system to provide genetic variants related to diabetes mellitus is needed. DMBase is an integrated web-based genetic information resource for diabetes mellitus designed to service genomic variants, genes, and secondary information derived for diabetes mellitus genetics researchers. The current version of DMBase documents 754 genes with 3056 genetic variants and 66 pathways. It provides many effective search interfaces for retrieving diabetes mellitus and genetic information. A web interface for the DMBase is freely available at http://sysbio.kribb.re.kr/dmBase.

  • Great efforts have been made to improve both the quality of life and life expectancy of diabetes by treating problems associated with chronic complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy and nephropathy. In particular, diabetes is an increased risk of developing several types of kidney disease, and the predominant cause of end-stage renal disease in patients with this disorder is diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, prevention of the occurrence and progression of diabetes and its complications has become a very important issue. The scientific observations of an animal model of streptozotocin-induced diabetes, spontaneously occurring diabetes and diabetic nephropathy in this study suggest that one of the Kampo prescriptions, Hachimi-jio-gan comprising eight constituents, is a novel therapeutic agent.

  • The Republic of Korea (ROK) has been putting much effort to deal with diabetes which is being increasingly found in all age groups due to inadequate diet. Diabetes is closely related to one's eating habits and lifestyle that often cause hyperglycemia so that it is essential for the diabetic patients to change them to improve or control the major symptoms of diabetes. This study introduces a software engineering solution to support these patients. The software designed for the solution lets the patients to easily recognize their sugar levels and current treatment schemes and then advises a more effective approach along with the essential information through the embedded push service. The major goal of this study is to support diabetes patients by providing a convenient but effective means to prevent or improve diabetic symptoms by patients themselves who will in turn change their lifestyles in a positive manner.

  • Currently, diabetes is the most common chronic disease in the world, affecting 23.7% of the population in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Diabetes may be the cause of lower-limb amputations, kidney failure and blindness among adults. Therefore, diagnosing the disease in its early stages is essential in order to save human lives. With the revolution in technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could play a central role in the early prediction of diabetes by employing Machine Learning (ML) technology. In this paper, we developed a diagnosis system using machine learning models for the detection of type 2 diabetes among adults, through the adoption of two different diabetes datasets: one for training and the other for the testing, to analyze and enhance the prediction accuracy. This work offers an enhanced classification accuracy as a result of employing several pre-processing methods before applying the ML models. According to the obtained results, the implemented Random Forest (RF) classifier offers the best classification accuracy with a classification score of 98.95%.

  • The prevalence of diabetes continues to increase worldwide, and the problem is also important in Korea, and about 14% of Korean adults have diabetes. Alcohol consumptions are increasing rapidly around the world and are recognized as one of the major problems in the country. Alcohol consumption is an environmental factor previously known to be associated with the risk of developing diabetes. Alcohol consumption can cause problems in the endocrine system and gastrointestinal function, and oxidative stress of acetaldehyde, an ethanol metabolite, can damage beta cells in the pancreas. In the present study, we found the effect of alcohol intake on fasting blood sugar and the difference between men and women in the risk of diabetes according to alcohol intake. In men, the high-drinking group had a higher risk of diabetes than the non-drinking group (OR, 1.41; P=0.058). In women, the Moderate-drinking group had a lower risk of diabetes compared to the non-drinking group (OR, 0.42; P=0.039). The high-drinking group had a higher risk of diabetes than the non-drinking group (OR, 2.97; P=0.034). The group that consumed more than the WHO's daily alcohol intake risk standard tended to have a higher risk of diabetes than the group that did not (OR, 5.48; P=0.001). This study suggest that moderate alcohol consumption reduce the risk of developing diabetes, and high alcohol consumption increase the risk of developing diabetes.

  • Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) can cause nonobstructive hydronephrosis. Congenital NDI (CNDI) is caused by a genetic mutation. This case report presents a 12-year-old girl who was incidentally diagnosed with nonobstructive hydronephrosis due to NDI caused by AQP2 gene mutation after being evaluated for microscopic hematuria found on routine health examination at school. The patient's medical and family history was unremarkable, and she complained of nocturia only at the time of the clinic visit. Bilateral hydronephrosis on abdominal ultrasonography prompted a water deprivation test, leading to diagnosis of NDI. Genetic study confirmed p.Asn (AAC)123Ser (AGC) in exon 2 of the AQP2 gene. Polyuria and hydronephrosis improved following arginine-vasopressin therapy. CNDI responsive to treatment should be considered as a possible cause of nonobstructive hydroureter.
