  • Infectious diseases precede a significant proportion of acute ischemic strokes in children. Here, we report a case of acute ischemic stroke in a 3-year-old girl with a Mycoplasma pneumonia-associated respiratory tract infection. She developed an acquired prothrombotic state of protein S deficiency and had increased fibrinogen and fibrinogen degradation product levels and increased titer of antinuclear antibodies. However, these conditions were completely alleviated at the 1-month follow-up examination. Infection with M. pneumoniae may cause a transient prothrombotic state that can potentially cause a thrombus.

  • It is common to install multiple lines in the same route. Recently, excessive sheath circulating current was partially measured in underground cable systems of KEPCO. Especially, the installation type, unbalance section length between joint boxes and zero sequence current by distribution cable have an effect on the rising of sheath circulating current in the underground transmission system. If excessive current flows in sheath, sheath loss which is reduced the transmission capacity is produced. This paper describes the relation analysis of sheath circulating current and burying types. And also, a detailed analysis on rising cause and characteristic of sheath circulating current by considering various unbalanced conditions presents using analysis and measurement regarding cable systems which have the problem of excessive sheath circulation current.

  • Autophagy is a lysosome-dependent intracellular degradation process that allows recycling of cytoplasmic constituents into bioenergetic and biosynthetic materials for maintenance of homeostasis. Since the function of autophagy is particularly important in various stress conditions, perturbation of autophagy can lead to cellular dysfunction and diseases. Accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates, a common cause of neurodegenerative diseases, can be reduced through autophagic degradation. Recent studies have revealed defects in autophagy in most cases of neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, deregulated excessive autophagy can also cause neurodegeneration. Thus, healthy activation of autophagy is essential for therapeutic approaches in neurodegenerative diseases and many autophagy-regulating compounds are under development for therapeutic purposes. This review describes the overall role of autophagy in neurodegeneration, focusing on various therapeutic strategies for modulating specific stages of autophagy and on the current status of drug development.

  • This paper introduces a mixture of background subtraction technique and K-Means clustering algorithm for removing shadows from video sequences. Lighting conditions cause an issue with segmentation. The proposed method can successfully eradicate artifacts associated with lighting changes such as highlight and reflection, and cast shadows of moving object from segmentation. In this paper, K-Means clustering algorithm is applied to the foreground, which is initially fragmented by background subtraction technique. The estimated shadow region is then superimposed on the background to eliminate the effects that cause redundancy in object detection. Simulation results depict that the proposed approach is capable of removing shadows and reflections from moving objects with an accuracy of more than 95% in every cases considered.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior and interest. Sleep problems are not uncommon in children with autism spectrum disorders. Symptoms of insomnia are the most frequent sleep problems in individuals with ASD. Sleep problems can cause significant difficulties in the daily life of children with ASD and their families. Genetic factor, deregulations of melatonin synthesis, extraneous environmental stimuli and psychiatric and medical conditions may cause sleep problems. The first line treatment of sleep problems in ASD includes managements for potential contributing factors and parent education about sleep hygiene care for child and behavioral therapy. Supplementation with melatonin may be effective before considering other medications, such as risperidone, clonidine, and mirtazapine.

  • Accurate detection and classification of faults on transmission lines is vitally important. High impedance faults(HIF) in particular pose difficulties for the commonly employed conventional overcurrent and distance relays, and if not detected, can cause damage to expensive equipment, threaten life and cause fire hazards. Although HIFs are far less common than LIFs, it is imperative that any protection device should be able to satisfactorily deal with both HIFs and LIFs. This paper proposes an algorithm for fault detection and classification for both LIFs and HIFs using Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System(ANFIS). The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested on a typical 154[kV] Korean transmission line system under various fault conditions. Test results show that the ANFIS can detect and classify faults including (LIFs and HIFs) accurately within half a cycle.

  • The identifying cause of leakage problems on mechanical seal in a feed water pump of power plant have been difficult because of technical limits of domestic mechanical seal manufacturer and the various conditions of power plants. This paper can get a conclusion through the consideration study and experiment test of mechanical seal characteristics of feed water pump depending on oxygen treatment as follows. The oxygen treatment increase dissolved oxygen and cause a corrosion on the mechanical seal stationary ring composed of antimony as well as leakage problems. For solving leakage problems of seal, to eliminate dissolved oxygen in the cooling water of seal with hydrazine injection can prevent leakage problems of mechanical seal in feed water pump.

  • Bulking phenomena and scum formation are common problem in suspended growth system like the activated sludge plants for wastewater treatment. Apart from wastewater composition, operating conditions, such as mechanical stress by insufficient oxygen supply, are often decisive for the occurrence of a bulking or scumming problem. There were the comparative aeration tanks in terms of sludge bulking caused by the difference of mechanical aeration facilities in the wastewater treatment plant of N paper mill company. In this study the cause of bulking was investigated through not only the biological isolation and identification but also a series of operational data consideration. On the basis of the investigation results for bulking cause, the operational criteria on dissolved oxygen concentration was derived to decrease the bulking problem.

  • ACSR of the catenary wires is corrosion degradation progressed by the effect of atmospheric pollution. ACSR which consists of galvanized steel stranded aluminum. The inside of Steel Reinforced is hot-dipped zinc coating steel wire and it takes charge of tension. If ACSR is exposed in atmosphere, the galvanic corrosion is occurred because it is contacted with aluminum. It is occurred the chemical reaction rapidly so that the local a defect is also occurred. If the catenary wires are exposed in atmosphere of pollution conditions, it may cause to reduce the mechanical strength by corrosion degradation and may cause to damage the wires by micro cracks. Accordingly, this study presents the effects of mechanical properties through the corrosion of ACSR.

  • Penetration of distributed generator(DG) to power distribution system can cause malfunction of existing protection schemes. Because grid interconnected DG can contribute fault currents and make bidirectional current flows on the system, fault contributions from DG can cause an interference of protection relay operation. Therefore, over current protection device of the distribution system with DGs need directional protection schemes. In this paper, improved directional protection algorithms are proposed for the distribution system with DG considering their fault characteristics. And than, these directional protection algorithms are tested and validated in various fault conditions. From the simulation results, it can be seen that the proposed directional protection algorithms are practically efficient for the radial distribution system with DG.
