During the installation of crude oil or gas pipelines, which pass through onshore buried pipelines or onshore pipeline from subsea pipeline to onshore plant, countermeasures need to be implemented so as to ensure a sufficient design life by protecting the steel pipes against corrosion. This can be achieved through impressed current cathodic protection method for onshore pipelines and through galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection method for offshore pipelines. In particular, in the case of impressed current cathodic protection, isolation joint flanges should be used. However, this makes maintenance control difficult with its installation having a negative impact on price. Therefore, in this study, the most suitable methodology for onshore pipeline protection between galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection and impressed current cathodic protection method will be introduced. In oil and gas transportation facilities, the media can be carried to the end users via onshore buried and/or offshore pipeline. It is imperative for the field operators, pipeline engineers, and designers to be corrosion conscious as the pipelines would undergo material degradations due to corrosion. The mitigation can be achieved with the introduction of an impressed current cathodic protection method for onshore buried pipelines and a galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection method for offshore pipelines. In the case of impressed current cathodic protection, isolation joint flanges should be used to discontinuity. However, this makes maintenance control to be difficult when its installation has a negative impact on the price. In this study, the most suitable corrosion protection technique between galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection and impressed current cathodic protection is introduced for (economic life of) onshore buried pipeline.

This study aims to find out the best anode location for buried pipelines. Numerical simulation program known as CATPRO (Elsyca, Belgium) were used for confirming the best location of anodes and the effects of impressed current cathodic protection system. Applied conditions for numerical simulation were similar to on-site environmental conditions for optimal application of cathodic protection system. Used criterion of cathodic protection was NACE SP 0169, which describes that minimum requirement for cathodic protection is -850mV vs. CSE. Various layouts for anodes' installation were applied, which were distance between anodes, anode installation location, and applied current. The areas where cathodic protection potential was lower than -850mV vs. CSE was limited up to 50m from anode installation locations. It was founded numerical analysis obtain cost-effective and efficient cathodic protection methods before design and application the impressed cathodic protection system to on-site environment.
A zinc mesh sacrificial anode cathodic protection method is recently being developed to protect the reinforced concrete structure in a marine environment. However, comprehensive information regarding the cathodic protection technology applied to reinforced concrete test specimens utilizing zinc mesh sacrificial anodes remains limited. Particularly, no research has investigated the effective range of sacrificial anode cathodic protection in a reinforced concrete structure regarding the transmission of protection current from zinc mesh sacrificial anode to the reinforced concrete structure, particularly concerning effects of temperature variations. This study examined the distribution of potential and current using a long single rebar and several segment reinforcing bars inside a horizontal beam. Vertical pile specimens were applied with a zinc mesh sacrificial anode to simulate concrete bridges or harbor structures. To check the effect of cathodic protection, cathodic protection potential and current of the reinforced concrete specimens were measured and 100 mV depolarization criterion test was performed. It was confirmed that effect of cathodic protection varied depending on resistivity and temperature. The cathodic protection test of pile specimens revealed that the maximum reachable range of cathodic protection current was 10 cm from the waterline as observed in the experiment.
There are two effective methods in use to protect ship ballast tank against corrosion. One is paint coating and the other cathodic protection(CP). The conventional cathodic protection design has mainly relied on the expert's experience. During the last two decades computer modeling has been significantly developed as an advanced design technology for cathoidic protection systems not only for ships, but also for offshore structures. However the present computer modeling of cathodic protection systems have some limitations simulating corrosion in the ballast tank with a deteriorated coating. In this study, "coating breakdown factor" considering coating degradation states with time has been attempted to improve the cathodic protection modeling using the data from literatures.

As the development of industry water quality of river is going to bad because of waste water of an industrial complex and general home agricultural chemicals exhaust of $SO_3$ and CO gas acid rain and so on. Corrosion damage of boiler factory equipment and so forth occur quickly due to using of the polluted water resulting in increasing leak accident. Especially working life of hot water boiler using the polluted water becomes more short and energy loss increases. The cathodic protection method is the most economical and reliable one to prevent corrosion damage of steel structures. Mg-base alloys galvanic anode protection of cathodic protection method is suitable for than application of hot water boiler using water with high specific resistance such as tap water. This paper is studied on the cathodic protection characteristics of how water boiler. In tap water and 0.001mol/$\ell$ NaCl solution the characteristics of anodic polarization of Mg-base alloys galvanic anode and tube material is investigated the measurement of cathodic protection potential according to the time elaspsed is carried out.
In rebar concrete structure, the corrosion of rebar can arise the deterioration of concrete structure and may affect the safety of the whole system. Recently, several methods for corrosion protection have been used and are more important for concrete structure using the sand including chloride ion. Among several protections, electrical cathodic protection has been expected to be one of the most useful methods in corrosion protection for reinforcement of concrete structures. The anode for cathodic protection needs high current density, high corrosion resistance and low overvoltage. To fill up the special qualities, the insoluble anodes were developed and these anodes were coated with metal oxide of $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$, $RuO_2$, and $IrO_2$. Lifetime of these anodes can be one of the important factors affecting the lifetime of concrete structure in cathodic protection. In this work, several anodes were made by sol-gel method and thermal decomposition method and the lifetime of these anodes was evaluated by NACE international standard test method, TM 0294-94. Also, we did analyze the properties of coated metal oxides.

Galvanic protection method is one the cathodic protection methods and is mostly used for corrosion prevention of heat exchangers and ship's hull. In this paper, it was investigated that how cathodic potential distribution was varied with according to the bare and painted steel plates in case of galvanic anode protection. The results obtained above were as follows. 1. Cathodic potential distribution of a painted steel plate was smoothed than that of the bare steel plate all over the cathodic surface area. 2. It was shown that polarization potential of the bare steel plate was somewhat shifted to negative potential, on the contrary that of the painted steel plate was somewhat shifted from negative potential to positive potential as time gone by beginning of galvanic anode method. 3. The applied current density in order to maintain constant protection potential(-770mv SCE) in the painted steel plate was less than that of the bare steel plate because of the high resistance polarization of the painted steel plate. 4. It was suggested that required number and life-time of anode for galvanic anode protection could be decided easily with corrosion prevention coefficient obtained by experimental data.
Steel corrosion is the most serious problem in RC structures. Even though patch repair method is normally applied in repair system, the effectiveness is not enough. Cathodic protection in active repair method to deteriorated RC structures. FEM model was developed to simulate the optimized cathodic protection condition. Iro oxidation, hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction were considered to expect current distribution. Moisture content in concrete which can affect the electrolyte conductivity was used as initial condition.
A marine structural material was well known to have high tensile strength, good weldability and proper corrosion resistance. Cu-containing high strength low alloy(HSLA) steel was recently developed for their purposes mentioned above. And the steel is free about preheating for welding, therefore it is reported that shipbuilding cost by using it can be saved more or less. However the marine structural materials like Cu-containing HSLA steel are being generally adopted with cathodic protection method in severe corrosive environment like natural sea water but the high strength steel may give rise to Hydrogen Embrittlement due to over protection at high cathodic current density for cathodic protection. In this study Cu-containing HSLA steel using well for marine atructure was investigated about the susceptibility of Hydrogen Embrittlement as functions of tensile strength, strain ratio, fracture time, and fracture mode, etc. and an optimum cathodic protection potential by slow strain rate test(SSRT) method as well as corrosion properties in natural sea water. And its corrosion resistance was superior to SS400 steel, but Hydrogen Embrittlement susceptibility of Cu-containing HSLA steel was higer than that of SS400 steel. However Hydrogen Embrittlement of its steel by SSRT method was showed with pheonomena such as decreasing of fracture time, strain ratio and fracture mode of QC(quasi-cleavage). Eventually it is suggested that an optimum cathodic protection potential not presenting Hydrogen Embrittlement of Cu-containing of HSLA steel by SSRT method was from-770mv(SCE) to - 900mV(SCE)under natural sea water.
For the longer service life of steel pile, cathodic protection is selected sometimes at corrosive environment. The cathodic protection design improvement was investigated in this study. The current demand for cathodic protection was calculated from the potentiostatic current monitoring of the steel specimen in the deaerated soil samples. In this study, the current distribution was studied using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) numerical analysis methods. The optimum layout of the anode was developed and confirmed by numerical analysis. Under the conventional design of the anode, the length of the anode hole is same as the pile length. We found that, at the bottom end of the pile, the current density is too high. When the anode hole length was 80% of the pile length, the current consumption at the end was reduced. The construction cost of anode hole drilling was decreased about 20%, as compared to the conventional design. Furthermore, the life of the anode materials could be extended by reducing the current consumption at the end section. Using this approach, the construction cost was reduced significantly without any under-protection area on the steel piles.
