Industrial application of WC-TiAlN nanocomposite films synthesized by cathodic arc ion plating system on PCB drill

  • Recently TiN, TiAlN, CrN hardcoatings have adapted many industrial application such as die, mold and cutting tools because of good wear resistant and thermal stability. However, in terms of high speed process, general hard coatings have been limited by oxidation and thermal hardness drop. Especially in the case of PCB drill, high speed cutting and without lubricant process condition have not adapted these coatings until now. Therefore more recently, superhard nanocomposite coating which have superhard and good thermal stability have developed. In previous works, WC-TiAlN new nanocomposite film was investigated by cathodic arc ion plating system. Control of AI concentration, WC-TiAlN multi layer composite coating with controlled microstructure was carried out and provides additional enhancement of mechanical properties as well as oxidation resistance at elevated temperature. It is noted that microhardness ofWC-TiA1N multi layer composite coating increased up to 50 Gpa and got thermal stability about $900^{\circ}C$. In this study WC-TiAlN nanocomposite coating was deposited on PCB drill for enhancement of life time. The parameter was A1 concentration and plasma cleaning time for edge sharpness maintaining. The characteristic of WC-TiAlN film formation and wear behaviors are discussed with data from AlES, XRD, EDS and SEM analysis. Through field test, enhancement of life time for PCB drill was measured.

FVA 증착법에 의해 합성된 ta-C 박막의 구조 및 물성 제어 (The control of the structure and properties of tetrahedral amorphous carbon films prepared by Filtered Vacuum Arc)

  • 진공 여과 음극 아크(Filtered Vacuum cathodic Arc, FVA) 증착법을 이용하여 초경질 다이아몬드상 카본 박막(tetrahedral amorphous carbon, ta-C)을 합성하였다. FVA 증착법은 이온화율이 높고, 치밀한 다이아몬드상 카본 박막 증착에 적당한 이온 에너지를 갖는 등의 장점을 갖고 있다. 하지만, 이때의 카본 이온 에너지는 아크 소스의 조작만으로는 쉽게 조절되지 못한다는 단점을 갖고 있다. 다양한 물성 조절을 위해, 본 연구에서는 기판에 바이어스 전압을 인가하여 ta-C박막의 기계적 물성을 제어하였다. 기판의 바이어스 전압이 증가함에 따라, 기계적 물성 및 밀도는 바이어스 전압이 -100 V인 경우에 최대값을 보였다. 최대 경도값 및 밀도는 각각 55$\pm$3 GPa, 3.6$\pm$0.4 g/㎤로 이는 RF PACVD나 이온빔으로 증착되는 DLC의 3~5배에 이르는 값이다. 조성 및 구조 분석은 Raman spectroscopy와 NEXAFS spectroscopy를 이용하여 조사하였다. 각 바이어스 전압에 따른 박막의 물성 변화는 박막내의 $sp^2$$sp^3$ 혼성결합 분율의 변화의 관점으로 이해할 수 있었다.

The influence of EAF dust on resistivity of concrete and corrosion of steel bars embedded in concrete

  • Essentially, when electrical current flows easily in concrete that has large pores filled with highly connective pore water, this is an indication of a low resistivity concrete. In concrete, the flow of current between anodic and cathodic sites on a steel reinforcing bar surface is regulated by the concrete electrical resistance. Therefore, deterioration of any existing reinforced concrete structure due to corrosion of reinforcement steel bar is governed, to some extent, by resistivity of concrete. Resistivity of concrete can be improved by using SCMs and thus increases the concrete electrical resistance and the ability of concrete to resist chloride ingress and/or oxygen penetration resulting in prolonging the onset of corrosion. After depassivation it may slow down the corrosion rate of the steel bar. This indicates the need for further study of the effect of electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) addition on the concrete resistivity. In this study, concrete specimens rather than mortars were cast with different additions of EAFD to verify the electrochemical results obtained and to try to understand the role of EAFD addition in influencing the corrosion behaviour of reinforcing steel bar embedded in concrete and its relation to the resistivity of concrete. The results of these investigations indicated that the corrosion resistance of steel bars embedded in concrete containing EAFD was improved, which may link to the high resistivity found in EAFD-concrete. In this paper, potential measurements, corrosion rates, gravimetric corrosion weight results and resistivity measurements will be presented and their relationships will also be discussed in details.

아크 이온플레이팅법에 의한 저온 CrN 합성 (The Low Temperature Deposition of CrN Films by the AIP Method)

  • CrN coatings were deposited by cathodic arc ion plating method on the SKD11 steel substrates. Atmosphere temperature of $350^{\circ}C$, arc current of 90 A, nitrogen partial pressure of 1.0-5.3 Pa, and negative bias voltage of 30-135 V were selected. The characteristics of microstructure were investigated with XRD. Hardness, adhesion and friction coefficient measured by microhardness tester, scratch tester, and ball on disk tribometer. Microstructures depended on nitrogen partial pressure and bias voltage. The preferred orientation of the films was changed from (200) to (111) with decreasing pressure and increasing bias voltage. Adhesion properties related with microstructure, but microstructure changes slightly influenced on hardness and friction properties. The critical load.($Lc_1$) and hardness of CrN films deposited at 5.3 Pa, -30 V condition were 55 N(HF1), $2157{\pm}47\;Hk_{0.025}$. The friction coefficient were about 0.5 under dry condition.

  • Diamond-like carbon(DLC) thin films are produced by using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc(FCVA) deposition system. Different magnetic components, namely steering, focusing, and filtering plasma-optic systems, are used to achieve a stable arc plasma and to prevent the macroparticles from incorporating into the deposited films. Effects of magnetic fields on plasma behavior and film deposition are examined. The carbon ion energy is found to be varied by applying a negative (accelerating) substrate bias voltage. The deposition rate of DLC films is dependent upon magnetic field as well as substrate bias voltage and at a nominal deposition condition is about $2{\AA}/s$. The structural properties of DLC films, such as internal stress, relative fraction of tetrahedral($sp^3$) bonds, and surface roughness have also been characterized as a function of substrate bias voltages and partial gas($N_2$) pressures.

후처리 적용에 따른 방식용 Al-3%Mg 용사코팅 층의 해수 내 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Characteristics in Sea Water of Al-3%Mg Arc Spray Coating Layer for Corrosion Protection with Sealing Treatment)

  • 해양환경 하에서 강재에 대한 방식 목적으로 Al-3%Mg 용사선재를 이용하여 아크 용사코팅을 실시하였다. 그리고 Al-3%Mg 용사코팅 층의 내식성을 개선하기 위하여 유/무기 복합 세라믹 후처리를 실시하였다. 후처리 적용에 따른 용사코팅 층의 다양한 전기화학적 실험 결과, 양극분극과 음극분극 실험 시 모든 전위구간에서 후처리 적용 시 전류밀도가 작게 나타나 내식성 개선이 확인되었다. 그리고 후처리된 용사코팅 층의 표면에서 관찰된 마이크로 크랙의 영향으로 자연전위 계측 시 심한 전위변동이 나타났으며, 양극분극 실험 시에는 후처리 층의 탈리손상이 용이하게 발생하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 타펠분석을 기반으로 외부 환경차단 효과를 나타내는 코팅 효율이 92.11%로 산출되어 Al-3%Mg 용사코팅 층의 내식성이 향상되었다.

$Co_2$ Corrosion Mechanism of Carbon Steel in the Presence of Acetate and Acetic Acid

  • The corrosion behavior of carbon steel (N80) in carbon dioxide saturated 1%NaCl solution with and without acetic acid or acetate was investigated by weight-loss test, electrochemical methods (polarization curve, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). The major objective is to make clear that the effect of acetic acid and acetate on the corrosion of carbon steel in $Co_2$ environments. The results indicate that either acetic acid or acetate accelerates cathodic reducing reaction, facilitates dissolution of corrosion products on carbon steel, and so promotes the corrosion rate of carbon steel in carbon dioxide saturated NaCl solution. All Nyquist Plots are consisting of a capacitive loop in high frequency region, an inductive loop in medial frequency region and a capacitive arc in low frequency region. The high frequency capacitive loop, medial frequency inductive loop and low frequency capacitive arc are corresponding to the electron transfer reaction, the formation/adsorption of intermediates and dissolution of corrosion products respectively. All arc of the measured impedance reduced with the increase of the concentration of Ac-, especially HAc. However, the same phenomenon is not notable after reducing pH value by adding HCl. HAc is a stronger proton donor and can be reduced directly by electrochemical reaction firstly. Ac- can't participate in electrochemistry reaction directly, but $Ac^-$ an hydrate easily to create HAc in carbon dioxide saturated environments. HAc is as catalyst in $Co_2$ corrosion. As a result, the corrosion rate was accelerated in the presence of acetate ion even pH value of solution increased.

Novel room temperature grown carbon based cathodes for field emission using diamond nano-particle seeding technique

  • Low field electron emission from novel carbon based cold cathodes is reported. The cathodes consisted of a layer of nanoseeded diamond and an over layer of nanocluster carbon films. The nanoseeded diamond was first coated on to thesubstrate. The nanocluster carbon films were then deposited on the nanocrystalline diamond coated substrates using the cathodic arc process at room temperature. The heterostructured microcathodes were observed to exhibit electron emission currents of 1 $\mu$A/cm$^2$ at fields as low as 1.5 to 2V/$\mu$m. The effect of the nanoseeded diamond size and concentration and the properties of different nanocluster carbon films on emission characteristics is presented.

  • Industrial use of physical vapor deposition(PVD) has been widely expanded during last two decades, and in the mean time plasma assistance in PVD has become an essential tool in preparing compound films with dense microstructure. The principles of electron beam-based plating, balanced and unbalanced magnetron sputtering and cathodic arc deposition. consisting three basic configuration of plasma assisted PVD(PAPVD)process, were reviewed. Recent technical development in PVD coating process were discussed. This paper tries to show tendency for developing new coating film on cutting tools.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films are deposited at room temperature using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) technique. The influence of negative bias voltage (applied to the substrate from 0 to -250V) on the $sp^3$ hybridized carbon fraction is examined by Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for C 1s core peak. For the first time, depth profile of C 1s, Si 2p, and O 1s XPS peaks for the deposited DLC film are obtained. DLC film is modeled as a multilayered structure. composing of surface, bulk, and interface. In addition, the x-ray reflectivity (XRR) is proposed as a method for estimating the density, surface roughness, and thickness of each layer constituting the DLC film. The estimated thickness of DLC film is in good agreement with the result obtained from the transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurement.
