A Study on Corrosion Characteristics of Multilayered WC- $Ti_{1-x}$A $l_{x}$N Coatings Deposited on AISI D2 Steel

  • $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N multilayered coatings are performed by their periodically repeated structures of lamellae of WC-Ti/$WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ Nmaterials. The $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with variable Al content were deposited onto AISI D2 steel by cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. The electrochemical behavior of multilayered $WC-Ti_{1}$ -xA $l_{x}$ N coatings with different phases (WC- Ti$0.6/Al_{0.4}$ N, $WC-Ti_{0.53}$$Al_{0.47}$N, $WC-Ti_{0.5}$ $Al_{0.5}$ N and $WC-Ti_{ 0.43}$$Al_{0.57}$ N) was investigated in deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution at room temperature. The corrosion behaviors for the multilayered coatings were investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization) and surface analyses (X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES)). In the petentiodynamic polarization test, the corrosion current density of $WC-Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$N was lower than others.

  • In general, most of the GIS only deal with materials and geometric data which just include position, radius, length of the structure. Therefore it's hard to get corrosion data from it. But the one that an owner of metallic structures want to know is the integrity of the structure. Cathodic Protection System can not protect corrosion on the underground facilities perfectly but protect corrsion effectively. It therefore is necessary to monitor the facilities continually So, we need the development of GIS interconnected a corrosion prediction system on the view point of the efficiency of operation and the protection for a big accident. The results of the development of its system are described in this paper. It can do life prediction and interference analysis and also newest corrosion data should be updated regularly.

  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption, and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same routes, the close proximity of high voltage structures and metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Moreover, normal steady state and fault currents become higher as electric networks increase in size and power Therefore, there has been and still is a growing concern(safety of people marking contact with pipeline, risk of damage to the pipeline coating, the metal and equipment connected to pipeline, especially cathodic protection system) about possible hazards resulting from the influence of high voltage power system on metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline and water pipeline etc.). Therefore, we analyze the interference problems when the gas pipeline is buried with power cable in the same submarine tunnel. This paper present the results of the study about interference mechanism, AC corrosion limitation of safety voltage and analysis of induction voltage.

  • Direct solid analysis of various kinds of metal samples has been conducted by glow discharge. In this laboratory, the gas-jet assisted glow discharge(GJGD) device has been developed and characterized. The effect of changes in applied current, cell pressure and flow rate on atomic emission signals obtained from a jet-assisted cathodic sputtering was investigate. The emission intensities of Cu, Zn, and Ar were measured. They were increased with the current. But the intensities were decreased by increasing the flow rate of argon due to the diffusion and transportation of particles into plasma. By increasing the pressure of the cell, the intensities were greatly decreased because of enhancement of redeposition onto the surface of the sample.

  • Quaternary Ti-Cr-Si-N coatings were synthesized onto steel substrates (SKD 11) using a hybrid method of arc ion plating (AIP) and sputtering techniques. For the Syntheses of Ti-Cr-Si-N coatings, the Ti-Cr-N coating process was performed substantially by a multi-cathodic AIP technique rising Cr and Ti targets, and Si was added by sputtering Si target during Ti-Cr-N deposition. In this work, comparative studies on microstructure and evaluation of mechanical properties between Ti-Cr-N and Ti-Cr-Si-N coatings were conducted. As the Si was incorporated into Ti-Cr-N coatings, the Ti-Cr-Si-N coatings showed largely increased hardness value of approximately 42 GPa than one of 28 GPa for Ti-Cr-N coatings. The average friction coefficient of Ti-Cr-N coatings largely decreased from 0.7 to 0.35 with increasing Si content up to 20 at. $\%$. In addition, wear behavior of Ti-Cr-N coatings against steel ball was much improved with Si addition due to the surface smoothening effect and tribe-chemical reaction.

  • To minimize the risk of corrosion on buried pipeline and to maximize the efficiency of cathodic protection, various indirect inspection techniques have been used for decades. In the United States, 49 CFR has regulated the external corrosion direct assessment for buried pipelines. In Korea, there is no provision for external corrosion direct assessment but there is only, according to the KGS Code, provision that if the survey of the defects of buried pipeline and the leakage test for the pipe were conducted, it is deemed to leakage inspection. We, therefore, have suggested external corrosion direct assessment method appropriate to domestic status through the survey of the regulations and standards of UK and the USA and the investigation of domestic situation on coating damage detection method. The proposed external corrosion direct evaluation method was used as the basis when introducing the precision safety diagnosis regulation for the medium-pressure pipe in Korea.

  • The determination of DNA hybridization can apply the molecular biology research. clinic diagnostics. bioengineering, environment monitoring, food science and other application area. So, The determination of hybridization is very important for the improvement of DNA detection system. In this study, we report the characterization of the DNA hybridization by the electricalchemical methods. The probe oligonucleotide was used to determine the amount of target oligonucleotide in solution using Methylen Blue(MB) as the electrochemical indicators. The cathodic peak currents($I_{peak}$) of MB were linearly related to the concentration of the target oligonucleotide sequence in the range $1[{\mu}M]{\sim}0.1[{\mu}M]$. The detection limit of this approach was 0.01[nM]. As a result, the match oligonucleotide(CR-1) was most stable state and the peak of redox current measured by DNA hybridization detection sensors by using electrochemical method seem to be similar to 1-mer terminal mismatch oligonucleotide(MR-3). The MR-2, MR-3, MR-22 and MR-33 have each mismatching sequence of central and terminal. With this set the role of point mutations was to be investigated. Terminal mismatch oligonucleotide (MR-3, 33) is shown more stable state than central mismatch oligonucleotide(MR-2, 22). And 1-mer mismatch oligonucleotide(MR-2 or 3) is shown more stable state than 2-mer mismatch oligonucleotide(MR-22 or 33).

Properties Analysis of Environment Friendly Electrodeposit Films Formed at Various Current Density Conditions in Natural Seawater (천연해수 중 전류밀도 변화에 따라 형성된 환경친화적인 전착 코팅막의 특성 분석)

  • Calcareous deposits are the consequence of pH increase of the electrolyte adjacent to metal surface affected by cathodic current in seawater. It obviously has several advantages over conventional coatings, since the calcareous deposit coating is formed from coating (Mg$^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$) naturally existing in seawater. In consideration of this respect, environment friendly calcareous deposit films were formed by an electro deposition technique on steel substrates submerged in 48$^{\circ}C$ natural seawater. And the influence of current density, coating time and attachment of steel mesh on composition ratio, structure and morphology of the electrodeposited films were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy(EDS) and X-Ray Diffractor(XRD), respectively. Accordingly, this study provides a better understanding of the composition between the growth of $Mg(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ during the formation of electro deposit films on steel substrate under cathodically electrodeposition in $48^{\circ}C$ natural seawater. The Mg compositions, in general, are getting decreased regardless of current density but Ca compositions are getting increased as electrodeposition time runs. That is, $Mg(OH)_2$ compounds of brucite structure shaped as flat type is formed at the initial stage of electrodeposition, but CaCO$_3$ compounds of aragonite structure shaped as flower type is formed in large scale. Besides, $Mg(OH)_2$ compounds were much formed at 5 A/$\m^2$ environment condition compared to the 3 A/$\m^2$ and 4 A/$\m^2$ environment conditions. This is because that OH- which was comparatively largely generated at the metal surface is preferably combined with $Mg^{2+}$TEX>.

  • In order to efficiently recycle waste industrial nickel-cadmium batteries, anodic and cathodic materials were crushed by a cut mill and classified by sieves. We used wet magnetic separation method for eliminating iron components from the crushed powders. In addition, the acid leaching test for the obtained anode and cathode powders was carried out under various conditions by means of the wet process. At the optimum leaching conditions with 2.0 M $H_2SO_4$ at $90^{\circ}C$, 15 wt $H_2O_2$ and L/S=20 for 3 hours, the leaching efficiency of nickel and cadmium was 99%, respectively.

Cathodic Properties of $LiCoO_2$ Synthesized by a Sol-Gel Method for Lithium Ion Battery

  • $LiCoO_2$ powder was synthesized in an aqueous solution by a sol-gel method and used as a cathode active material for a lithium ion rechargeable battery. The layered $LiCoO_2$ powders were prepared by igniting in air for 12 hrs at 600 ℃ $(600-LiCoO_2)$ and 850 ℃ $(850-LiCoO_2)$. The structure of the $LiCoO_2$ powder was assigned to the space group R bar 3 m (lattice parameters a=2.814 Å and c=14.04Å). The SEM pictures of $600-LiCoO_2$ revealed homogeneous and fine particles of about 1 μm in diameter. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) of $600-LiCoO_2$ electrode displayed a set of redox peaks at 3.80/4.05 V due to the intercalation/deintercalation of the lithium ions into/out of the $LiCoO_2$ structure. CVs for the $850-LiCoO_2$ electrode had a major set of redox peaks at 3.88/4.13 V, and two small set of redox peaks at 4.18/4.42 V and 4.05/4.25 V due to phase transitions. The initial charge-discharge capacity was 156-132 mAh/g for the $600-LiCoO_2$ electrode and 158-131 mAh/g for the $850-LiCoO_2$ electrode at the current density of 0.2 mA/cm2. The cycleability of the cell consisting of the $600-LiCoO_2$ electrode was better than that of the $850-LiCoO_2$. The diffusion coefficient of the $Li^+$ ion in the $600-LiCoO_2$ electrode was calculated as $4.6{\times}10^{-8}\; cm^2/sec$.
