The purpose of the paper is to review the key factors of automation and information technology which have generally had the first and the most impact on traditional cataloging department and catalogers. Additioansl qualities and skills which the catalogers in this environment will need are indentified. The review is done through the examination of research reports and results of numerous library surveys. The overall climate of change is toward a process of conver gent evolution between catalogers and public service librarians. The heads of technical services departments and several catalogers in eight Korean academic libraries including National Central Library are interviewed to find out the present development of automation and any effect on cataloging staff in terms of work and organizational structure. It is too early to have any such changing impact as the automation is still in its implementing stage. However, they see the future when professional catalogers are expected to serve in much extended role as the automation stages are moving ahead.

This study was intended to investigate the quality control in technical services outsourcing in academic libraries. For this purpose, investigated related papers and the experience of outsourced technical services in three academic libraries. Data from senior librarians charged with revision of catalogs are gathered. Issues of catalogs production and quality control are explored and statistics of outsourcing is analysed. Quality control is a major factor of the success of technical services outsourcing operation. The some suggestions in order to enhance quality of vendor-supplied cataloging are presented.

The purpose of this study is to examine the perception of RDA by university library librarians and the level of perception of emotions, familiarity, understanding, introduction, obstacles, and education, and to secure basic data to improve awareness. The data needed for the study were obtained through a survey of 76 librarians in 4-year university libraries. As a result of the survey, 67.1% of librarians had listened to RDA, and school classes were the highest at 51.0% of cognitive means. Second, librarians perceived that they were more positive emotions than negative emotions about RDA, and that they were not familiar with RDA-related principles or concepts. In particular, it was recognized that the RDA itself and FRAD were not more familiar. The librarian recognized that they understood RDA-related principles or concepts at a normal level, and in particular, recognized that they did not further understand the authority and encoding. Third, librarians recognized the introduction of RDA at a slightly higher level than usual, but among the questions, 'RDA replaces AACR2' was recognized at a normal level. The librarian recognized the obstacles to the introduction of RDA at a higher level than usual, and in particular, the lack of education related to RDA was highly recognized. Fourth, librarians recognized the need for RDA-related education at a high level, especially the use of RDA Toolkit, changes in RDA records, differences between RDA and AACR2, and the need for RDA and MARC21-related education. In this study, based on the research results, a plan to improve librarian awareness of RDA was proposed.

This study is to find a resource description methods applying RDA 2020 through comparing original RDA and RDA 2020, identifying the characteristics of RDA 2020, and describing practical resources focusing on manifestation applying the rules of RDA 2020. Several things should be considered for practical cataloging manifestation by RDA 2020. First, it is necessary to figure out which among the four recording methods are allowed by the elements of entities. Second, each library should develop its own application profile which specifies the elements be used for the resource description, supports the practical resource description, and makes effective resource description based on minimum description. Third, a template for encoding format could be created based on the application profile. This study will be able to provide practical help when cataloging librarians describe resources with applying RDA 2020.

In this study we determine the level of awareness among academic librarians of ten technological tools as outlined in American Libraries. Towards this end, we conducted a survey targeting 156 academic librarians in 25 Korean university libraries. Questionnaires were designed to determine both the viability and level of acceptance of the ten technological proposals in question. Conclusions drawn after analyzing the responses to the survey were as follows: 1) Customer service can be improved by first drawing up a list of technological skills required for staff members. Methods to develop the cataloging service to more closely match individual user preferences and the use of SMS to send alerts proved to be the proposals, of the ten that were proposed, that not only bore the greatest necessity but also proved to be the most effective once they were implemented. 2) Proposals that proved to be the most difficult to implement were: Using technology to improve the cataloging service to make it more capable of evolving according to the individual preferences of users; the special event wiki for users; and improvements in customer service arising from identifying and drawing up a list of technological skills required for staff members.

The scope and the magnitude of change that are occurring in libraries today are exciting and the new developments in information technology challenging. A change in vision as well as activities and operations is required. Librarians need to make full use of information and multimedia technology to support this greatly expanded teaching venture. During the period of the 1st to 5th conference of Korean Society for Information Management produces 199 articles. The articles composed of 25 sub subjects of the knowledge of the library and information science. The professional librarians pointed out the essential curricula of the library and informations science education. This study aims to analyze the current status of continuing education for academic librarians based on the records of education. For this purpose, the study investigated the academic librarian's preferences for the topics of continuing education in terms of regional and monthly differences using the 30,404 education records in university and college library statistics of Korean Education and Research Information Service (KERIS). The results shows that 'academic database system' and 'cataloging' were the most preferred topics, and there were topical differences between the academic librarians in university and college.

This article investigated the lives and careers of three great librarians in India, USA, and Korea: S. R. Ranganathan, Melvil Dewey, and Bong-Suk Park, respectively. It also explored their influences and contributions. Their births and early years, and marriage; college years; commitment toward librarianship and careers; achievements in other areas; personalities; and commemorative activities, among others, were analyzed. Their contributions to librarianship and library community in the general theory of library science, professional education, classification and cataloging, library administration and management, and library associations and library movement were also investigated. Special focus was on Bong-Suk Park, with a special regard to his unrealized dream for the Korean library community as well as insufficient estimation related to him and his achievements.

This study proposed to assess courses which are currently offered in the Department of Library and Information Science, and to explore directions for improvement. Based on field librarians' needs and opinions about the courses, we suggested separating the required, core, and elective courses. We proposed six courses including 'Internship', 'Introduction to Library and Information Science', 'Cataloging and Classification', 'Library Management', and 'Information Retrieval' as required courses, and 5 courses including 'Practice in Cataloging and Classification', 'Information Resource and Service', 'Collection Development', 'Digital Library System', 'Introduction to Bibliography' and 'Records Management and Archives' as core courses. Finally, the remaining courses were recommended as selective courses which each department could select depending on their circumstances and faculty. The important components for substantial LIS courses are as follows: timeliness of training topics, expertise of educational contents, professionalism and qualifications of faculty, specialized educational materials, and increasing the major correlation between courses and professors.

This study aims to explore preferred title and authorized access points for religious works with sample bibliographic data and authority data. To this end, this study (1) reviewed RDA and recently revised KCR as cataloging rules, (2) investigated the preferred titles and authorized access points of religious works in major national libraries as a case study, and finally (3) suggested a method for constructing preferred titles and authorized access points for religious works in Korean libraries using sample data. The data needed for the study were collected through literature research and case studies, and additional email inquiry with the catalog librarians was conducted. As a result of the study, preferred titles and authorized access points for religious works were proposed in the form of KORMARC bibliographic and authority data.
