Fabrication of TiAl alloy by centrifugal casting and its microstructure (원심주조법에 의한 TiAl 합금의 제조 및 미세구조 분석)

  • In this study, TiAl alloy was fabricated by a centrifugal casting method for turbo charge of automotive. Optimum conditions for defectless morphology using various ceramic mold were investigated. The crystal structure, microstructure, and chemical composition of the TiAl prepared by centrifugal casting were studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), microvickers hardness analyzer (HV). Two kinds of dendrite structures were observed with 4-fold and 6-fold symmetries. The FE-SEM, EDS and HV examinations of the as-cast TiAl showed that the thickness of the oxide layer (${\alpha}$-case) was typically less than $50{\mu}m$.

Flexural Behaviors of High Performance Hollow Core Slabs with Upper Strands (상부강선을 갖는 고성능 중공슬래브의 휨거동)

  • Hollow core slabs generally have not been used for a bridge or a parking slab in Korea. In this study, high performance hollow core slabs, which have been the most thick one in domestic are re-designed and examined for practical use. Flexural tests were performed on four 315mm deep hollow core slabs to investigate adaptability for high vehicle live loadings and composite action with topping concrete. The precast slabs were pre-tensioned with ten strands of 1/2 inch diameter at the lower of slab and four strands of 1/2 inch diameter at the upper of slab, and cast with 80 mm deep topping concrete. Tested hollow core slabs showed ductile failure behaviors which were conformed to the current Ultimate Strength Design Method for a span of 10m up to the live load of 1,000 kgf/㎡. The rectangular md round shear cotters which were used for the composite action between precast and topping concrete, developed sufficient strengths because cracking, even micro had not been developed at the end of slabs up to the pure flexural tensile failure.

Behavior of Steel-Concrete Composite Decks for PSC Girder Bridge with Various Shear Span Lengths (전단 지간의 변화에 따른 PSC 거더용 강-콘크리트 합성 바닥판의 역학적 거동)

  • Recently, steel-concrete composite structures are widely used in bridge and building constructions. In this paper, a new type of steel-concrete composite deck with profiled steel sheeting is proposed to replace the conventional cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck. Perfobond rib shear connectors were utilized to provide horizontal shear resistance between the profiled sheeting and the concrete. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed deck system, 8 full-scale deck specimens for PSC girder bridge were fabricated. The specimens were tested with four different shear span lengths to determine the horizontal shear resistance of the deck under a static monotonic loading. For comparison purpose, two reinforced concrete decks were also fabricated and tested. The horizontal shear resistance of the proposed deck system was calculated using the m-k method.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the horizontal shear strength on the interface between PC and cast-in-place concrete for PC composite beams. Six specimens were tested to examine the structural performance of the horizontal interface with different surface condition and stirrup detailing. Except for SF-291B specimen failed in flexural compression, strengths and deformation capacities of five specimens were determined by horizontal shear failure. Horizontal shear strengths by composite horizontal shear or shear friction in current codes could be used to predict the horizontal shear capacity of the interface for specimens. Also detailing for stirrup by PCI design provision could be used to accomplish the composite action in the interface.

  • Contemporary design and construction of steel-concrete composite structures employs the use of prefabricated concrete elements and demountable shear connectors in order to reduce the construction time and costs and enable dismantling of elements for their potential reuse at the end of life of buildings. Bolted shear connector with mechanical coupler is presented in this paper. The connector is assembled from mechanical coupler and rebar anchor, embedded in concrete, and steel bolt, used for connecting steel to concrete members. The behaviour and ultimate resistance of bolted connector with mechanical coupler in wide and narrow members were analysed based on push-out tests and FE analyses conducted in Abaqus software, with focus on concrete edge breakout and bolt shear failure modes. The effect of concrete strength, concrete edge distance and diameter and strength of bolts on failure modes and shear resistance was analysed. It was demonstrated that premature failure by breakout of concrete edge occurs when connectors are located 100 mm or closer from the edge in low-strength and normal-strength reinforced concrete. Furthermore, the paper presents a relatively simple model for hand calculation of concrete edge breakout resistance when bolted connectors with mechanical coupler are used. The model is based on the modification of prediction model used for cast-in and post-installed anchors loaded parallel to the edge, by implementing equivalent influence length of connector with variable diameter. Good agreement with test and FE results was obtained, thus confirming the validity of the proposed method.

  • Recent developments in multi-storey buildings for residential purpose have led to the extensive use of shear walls for the basic structural system. When the coupled shear wall system is used, joined together with cast-in-place concrete or mortar (or grout), the function of the continuous joints is a crucial factor in determining the safety of L.P. Precast concrete shear wall structures, because the function of the continuous joints(Vertical wall to wall joints) is to transfer froces from one element(shear wall panel) to another, and if sufficient strength and ductility is not developed in the continuous joints, the available strength in the adjoining elements may not be fully utilized. In this paper, the influence of the stiffness of vertical joints(wet vertical keyed shear joints) on the behaviour of precast shear walls is theoretically investigated. To define how the stiffness of the vertical joints affect the load carrying capacity of L.P.Precast concrete shear wall structure, the L.P.Precast concrete shear wall structure is analyzed, with the stiffness of the vertical joints varying from $K=0.07kg/mm^3$(50MN/m/m) to $K=1.43kg/mm^3$(1000MN/m/m), by using the continuous connection method. The results of the analysis shows that at the low values of the vertical stiffness, i.e. from $K=0.07kg/mm^3$(50MN/m/m) to $K=0.57kg/mm^3$(400MN/m/m), the resisting bending moment and shearing force of precast shear walls, the resisting shearing force of vertical joints and connecting beams are significantly affected.   • Cement based mortars are widely used to improve the soft ground of a dam site, highway construction, and karst voids. The mechanical properties of the mortar are well documented in literature, however very limited work is done on their physical properties such as electrical resistivity which is considered as one of the most important physical property known while improving the soft grounds. In this paper, electrical resistivity of the Portland cement mortars is examined by employing the Wenner technique. Cylindrical specimens with various water/cement ratios (w/c) ranges from 0.35, 0.45, 0.50 and 0.65 were cast and tested. The test results showed that the electrical resistivity of the mortar increases with increasing curing time and decreases with increasing water content and w/c. A reasonable, good relation was found between electrical resistivity and compressive strength of mortar.

  • Time dependent model for prediction of compressive strength development of concrete cured by microwave heating form was presented in this study. The presented model is similar to the equation which is given in ACI 209R-92 but the constants which is dependent on cement type and curing method in the presented model are modified by the regression analysis of the experimental data. Laboratory scale concrete specimens were cast and cured by the microwave heating form and drilled cores extracted from the specimens were fractured in compression. The measured core strengths are converted to standard core and in-situ strengths. These in-situ strengths are used for the regression.

  • Continuously contacting with camshaft the face of Valve Lifter made of cast iron brings about abnormal wear such as unfairwear or earlywear because it is heavily loaded in the valve train systems as the engine gets more powered. This abnormal wear becomes a defet namely over-clearance when the valve is lifting so that the fuel gas imperfectly combusted by unsuitable open or close aaction of the engine valve in the combustion chamber. The imperfect combustion in the end results in the major cause of air pollution and combustion chamber. Consequently to prevent this wear this study was to develop the valve lifter which is joined by brazing process with SCM435H and a tip by manufacturing the face as a superhardened which is joined by brazing process with SCM435H and a tip by manufacturing the face as a superhardened ceramics alloy which has high wear resistance. Having the excellent surface hardness with Hv1100-1200 the sintered body developed with superhardened alloy(WC) can endure the severe face loading in the valve train system. We experienced with various brazing alloys and obtained the excellent joining strength to the joint had 150MPa shear strength. Interface analysis and microstructure in a joint were examined through SEM & EDS Optical microscope. Also 2,500 hours high speed(3,000-4,000 rpm) and continuous (1step 12hr) engine dynamo testing was carried out to casting valve liter and ceramics-metal joint valve lifter so that the abnormal wears were compared and evaluated.

  • Valve lifter namely tappet is supported by lifter hole which is located upper side of camshaft in cylinder block transforms rotatic mvement of camshaft into linear movement and helps to open and shut the en-gine valve as an engine parts. The face of valve lifter which is continuously contacting with camshaft brings about abnormal wears such as unfair wear and early wear because it is severely loaded in the valve train system. These wears act as a defect like over-clearance and cause imperfect combustion of fuel during the valve lifting in the combustion chamber. Consequently this imperfect combustion makes the engine out-put decrease and has cause on air pollution. To prevent these wears therefore The valve lifter cast in me-tal developed into SiC ceramics valve lifter which has an excellence in wear and impact resistance As a results the optimum process conditions like injection condition mixture ratio and debonding process could be established. After sintering fine-sinered dual microstructure in which prior ${\alpha}$-SiC matches well with new SiC(${\beta}$-SiC) produced by reaction among the ${\alpha}$-SiC carbon and silicon was obtained. Based on the study it is verified that mechanical properties of SiC valve lifter are excellent in Vickers hardness 1100-1200 bending strength (300-350 Pa) fracture toughness(1.5-1.7 Mpa$.$m1/2) Through engine dynamo test-ing SiC valve lifter and metal valve lifter are examined and compared into abnormal phenomena such as early fracture unfair and early wear. It is hoped that this research will serve as an important springboard for the future study of heavy duty diesel engine parts developed by ceramics which has a good wear resis-tance relaibility and lightability.
