Surface Treatment of Automotive Cast Parts of Magnesium Alloy

  • The surface treatments. Chrome/Manganese and Modified Chrome Pickle, that are treated to improve the anti-corrosion property which is needed to increased the probability of prototype product enabled the sand cast Magnesium test specimens to have better corrosion resistance than non-treated one. Sand cast Magnesium specimens which was treated only with chemical conversion coating had same corrosion resistance with the Steel specimens plated by Zinc, and the another one that had the finishing treatment(painting) worked on the chemical surface treatment had the corrosion resistance property to meet to FPO-3 requirement. We also investigated the multiple finishing system(chemical surface treatment + 3 coating) to test the severe condition that magnesium should to endure.

Development of Aluminium Alloy for Piston of Air Compressor (공기 압축기의 피스톤용 알루미늄 합금 소재 개발)

  • It is important not only to reduce the casting defects of piston but also to improvement in the mechanical properties(hardness) of piston for the air compressor. The blow hole is typical casting defects in the conventional cast of aluminium alloy(AC8A-T6) piston. Because of the heat treatment method, mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy for piston was decided on the heat treatment method and cycle. Therefore, we tested on the development of mechanical properties and on the casting defects of piston for the air compressor in accordance with the heat treatment and casting condition. After the heat treatment and casting was carried out as several times, and was compared with the imported piston. As a result of several investigations; microstructure, hardness and casting defects of piston was changed under the influence of the heat treatment and casting method. When the cooling rate was controlled and the uni-cast method used, it bas the same mechanical properties and microstructure.

Dynamo Test Research for Performance Verification of CV-NCM Cast Iron Brake Disk (CV-NCM 주철재 제동디스크의 성능 검증을 위한 다이나모 시험연구)

  • The study is to analyze dynamo test results for various commercial pads in order to verify the performance of brake disk with CV-NCM cast iron. The developed brake disk will apply to 200 km/h tilting trains that is being developed as one part of project for speed-up on Korean existing railroad. The test program is made out suitably for braking condition and performance of test equipment by referring UIC 541-3. Two kinds of resin pad and one kind of foreign sintered pad suitable for 200 km/h trains are used as various commercial pad for the dynamo test. The data aquisition for the maximum and smallest temperature, hot spot, etc. on disk and pad is performed by using the thermocouples and thermal imaging cameras. From this research, we obtained braking characteristics between CV-NCM cast iron disk and pad of various material and will be utilized usefully as basis data of performance optimization of developing sintered pad.

Corrosion Characteristics of Cast Stainless Steel under Plasma Ion Nitriding Process Temperature in Marine Environment (주조 스테인리스강의 해양환경 하에서 플라즈마 이온질화 공정온도에 따른 부식특성 연구)

  • In order to improve corrosion resistance for cast stainless steel in seawater, the characteristics of corrosion resistance after plasma ion nitriding was investigated. Plasma ion nitriding process was conducted in a mixture of nitrogen of 25% and hydrogen of 75% at substrate temperature ranging from 350 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours using pulsed-DC glow discharge plasma with working pressure of 250 Pa in vacuum condition. Corrosion tests were carried out for as-received and plasma ion nitrided specimens. The corrosion characteristics were investigated by measurement of weight loss and observation of surface morphology. In anodic polarization experiment, relatively less damage depth and weight loss were presented at a nitrided temperature of $400^{\circ}C$, attributing to the formation of S-phase.

Influences of Casting Conditions and Constituent Materials on the Production of Duo-castings (이중복합 주조체의 제조에 미치는 구성 재질과 주조 조건의 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of the pouring temperature, preheating temperature, surface condition and fraction of the wear resistant part on the production of duo-castings were investigated using a high Cr white cast iron with excellent abrasion resistance and a low Cr alloy steel with good toughness. The constituent materials of the duo-castings were designed to have high hardness, fracture toughness and abrasive wear resistance for the replacement of high Mn alloy steels with low abrasive wear resistance. In particular, the amount of abrasive wear of 17% Cr white cast iron was about 1/20 of that of high Mn alloy steel. There was an intermediate area of about 3mm due to local melting at the bonding interface of the duo-castings. These intermediate regions were different from those of the constituent materials in chemical composition and microstructure. This region led to fracture within the wear resistant part rather than at the bonding interface in the bending strength test. The bending fracture strengths were 516-824 MPa, which were equivalent to the bending proof strength of high Mn steel. The effects of various casting conditions on the duo-cast behavior were studied by simple pouring of low Cr alloy steel melt, but the results proved practically impossible to manufacture duo-castings with a sound bonding interface. However, the external heating method was suitable for the production of duo-castings with a sound bonding interface.

EFFECT OF MICROSTRUCTURE ON MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN FRICTION STIR WELDED CAST A356 ALUMINUM ALLOY

  • Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid-state joining process which can homogenize the heterogeneous microstructure by intensely plastic deformation arising from the rotation of the welding tool. The present study applied the FSW to an A356 aluminum (AI) alloy with the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure in the T6 temper condition, and examined an effect of microstructure on mechanical properties in the weld. The base material consisted of Al matrix with a high density of strengthening precipitates, large eutectic silicon and a lot of porosities. The FSW led to fragment of the eutectic silicon, extinction of the porosities and dissolution of the strengthening precipitates in the Al alloy. The dissolution of strengthening precipitates reduced the hardness of the weld around the weld center and the transverse ultimate tensile strength of the weld. Longitudinal tensile specimen containing only the stir zone showed the roughly same strength as the base material and a much larger elongation. Moreover, Charpy impact tests indicated that the stir zone had remarkably the higher absorbed energy than the base material. The higher mechanical properties of the stir zone were attributed to a homogenization of the as-cast heterogeneous microstructure by FSW.

Effect of a Matrix Structure on the Initiation of Fatigue Crack and Fatigue Strength in Nodular Graphite Cast Iron (구상흑연 주철재의 피로크랙 발생 및 피로강도에 미치는 기지조직의 영향)

  • It is required the superior materials for the parts of machines or structures, which could be endurable in severe load and environment. According to advancement of casting technology, nodular graphite cast iron is used as suitable for such condition. But nodular graphite cast iron is scattering of fatigue strength and low reliability. Therefore in this study, the effect of matrix structure and number of nodular graphite on the initiation of fatigue crack and fatigue strength. It was found that the material which has relatively high ferrite volume fraction was more easily cracked than other materials and fatigue limit was low. The material which has not found pinhole on the surface, the crack was initiated in graphite went through ferrite and propagated into through graphite, but separated graphite and ferrite grain boundary and combined with other cracks to fro large one.

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning is initial step to fabricate removable partial denture, and one of most important factor influencing the prognosis. Partial edentulous patients have various condition of remaining teeth and oral mucosa. Therefore, for the proper diagnosis and treatment planning for each patient, getting many informations from patients during initial examination and fabricating accurate diagnostic cast are required. Especially, because the use of various diagnostic tools and surveying of diagnostic cast will be a guide for the abutment teeth selection, oral preparation and design of partial denture, dentist should understand and be able to apply this procedure during diagnosis.

A Study on the Evaluation of the Friction and Wear Properties for Normalized Ductile Cast Iron (노멀라이징 열처리한 구상 흑연 주철의 마찰.마모특성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This study is mainly concerned with the friction and wear properties for the specimens of crank shaft which are made of ductile cast iron. The friction and wear tests were carried out for the nor-malized ductile cast iron specimens and their properties were compared with each other at reheat-ing temperatures(550^{\circC,\; 600^{\circ}C,\; 650^{\circ}$) and in dry condition at different friction velocity(0.94 m/s 1.88m/s 2.83m/s) range. After austenized at $910^{\circ}C$ it is observed that the higher the reheating temperature is the hardness becomes decrease which is supposedly attributed to the fact that the amount of pearlite austenite matrix is rduced by reheating after normalizing and that as the reheating temperature goes up the pearlite generated is less and the interval between the pearlites were widened at last to make pearlite globular. At the low velocity the friction coefficient increase in the beginning and gets stabilized as the sliding distance increases. As the friction velocity grows the friction coefficient decreases suppos-edly since the abrasive wear is heavier at low velocity than at the high velocity as the friction tem-perature at low velocity is lower than at high velocity.

Laser Assisted Surface Alloying of Cast Iron with Thermal Sprayed Titanium Coatings (티타늄 용사피막을 이용한 주철의 레이저 표면합금화)

  • Commercial flake graphite cast iron substrate was coated with titanium powder by low pressure plasma spraying and was irradiated with a $CO_2$ laser to produce the wear resistant composite layer. From the experimental results of this study, it was possible to composite TiC particles on the surface layer by direct reaction between carbon existed in the cast iron matrix and titanium with thermal sprayed coating by remelting and alloying them using laser irradiation. The cooling rate of laser remelted cast iron substrate without titanium coating was about $1{\times}10^4$ K/s to $1{\times}10^5$ K/s in the order under the condition used in this study. The microstructure of alloyed layer consisted of three zones, that is, TiC particule crystallized zone (MHV $400{\sim}500$), the mixed zone of TiC particule+ledebulite (MHV $650{\sim}900$) and the ledebulite zone (MHV $500{\sim}700$). TiC particules were crystallized as a typical dendritic morphology. The secondary TiC dendrite arms were grown to the polygonized shape and were necking. And then the separated arms became cubic crystal of TiC at the slowly solidified zone. But in the rapidly solidified zone of fusion boundry, the fine granular TiC particules were grouped like grape.
