  • As a continuation of the previous work, a second group of sixty solvent fractions prepared from twenty plant species were screened for their inhibitory effects on adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP)-, arachidonic acid (AA)- or collagen-induced rat platelet aggregation. The results suggested that five plant species including Angelica koreana, Cassia obtusifolia, Gastrodia elata, Paeonia lactiflora and Salvia miltiorrhiza are potential sources of inhibitors of platelet aggregation.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate cytoprotective effect of Korean medicinal plants on alcohol-induced cytotoxicity in liver cells. Out of the 120 plant extracts tested in this study, 53 plant extracts enhanced alcohol-induced cytotoxicity in liver cells by 50~80%, while other 11 plant extracts including Crataegus pinnatifida reduced cytotoxicity by 1~68%. The results of DPPH free radical test and LDL lipid peroxidation test on the plant extracts that sharply reduced cytotoxicity in liver cells shows that Crataegus pinnatifida and Cinnamomum cassia had antioxidative effect. This study reports that the plant extracts that enhance or reduce ethanol-induced cytotoxicity in liver cells can be research objects as cytotoxic plants or cytotoxicity-protective plants.

  • For the quality control of crude drug drink preparations, methods for identification of cinnamon components and quantitative determination of cinnamic acid were established. Cinnamon components were identified by TLC with benzene/ethyl acetate (1:1, v/v) on silica gel plate by spraying p-anisaldehyde-sulfuric acid. Cinnamic acid contents were determined at UV 280 nm by HPLC on $\mu$-Bondapak Cls column with acetonitrile/water/acetic acid (40:60:2, v/v). Recoveries of cinnamic acid in three crude drug drink preparations were between 84.1-90.2% compared to the content of the cinnamon extract.

  • Traditional Chinese medicine classifies peripheral nerve impairment as paralysis and arthromyodynia, and considers that it is the result of defects of meridians and vessels, QI and blood, bones and muscles. Huangqi (Astragalus) Guizhi (Cassia Twig) Wuwu Tang, as a Qi invigorating formula, is usually used to improve peripheral nerve impairment. In recent years, some scholars have conducted research into Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) treatment with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang and certain values of this treatment approach have been identified. CIPN is a type of blood-arthralgia Zheng in traditional Chinese medicine theory. In this review, we will discuss the treatment of CIPN with Huangqi Guizhi Wuwu Tang according to blood-arthtalgia Zheng.

  • The repellent activity of methanol extracts from 8 aromatic medicinal plant species and a steam distillate against blood-starved Aedes aegypti (L.) females was laboratory examined by skin test and compared with that of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (deet). Reponeses varied according to Plant species. At a dose of $0.1mg/\textrm{cm}^2$, potent repellency against adult mosquitoes was obtained with extracts of Cinnamomum camphora (94.1 %) Cinnamomum cassia bark (91.2%), Eugenia caryophyllata flower bud (72.2%), and Tilia amurensis (69.4%). Repellent activity of these plant extracts was comparable to that of deet (83.4%). The plants described merit further study as potential mosquito-repellent agents.

  • The methanol extracts of 162 herbal medicines were screened for the inhibitory activity against VHR dualspecificity protein tyrosine phosphatase (DS-PTPase). Seventeen medicinal plants, Scutellaria baicalensis, Cuscuta chinensis, Caesalpinia sappan, Arecae pericarpium, Rubus coreanus, Machilus thunbergii, Amsonia elliptica Cinnamomum cassia, Arisaema erubescens, Pueraria thunbergiana, Dendrobium moniliforme, Mentha arvensis, Peucedanum japonicum, Salvia miltiorrhiza, Leonurus sibiricus, Siegesbeckia orientalis, Prunella vulgaris showed potent VHR DS-PTPase inhibitory activity.

An improved method has been developed with substiluting agar slant lor Korean paper(Har7ji). This method was panicularly useful for legumes with rigid radicle such as Cn.xsin 1mnmame. With this method Bmr!,~li1rzobin,17 sp. stram CN9135 on C nonmne induced root nodules biginning at day 7 of the nodulation period in 6% of the l ~ l a ~ l s , and all of ihe plants nodulated 14 days after inoculation by strain CN9135.

  • In order to find out an anticariogenic substance, antibacterial activities of some medical herbs and spices against Streptococcus mutans were investigated. The essential oils of oregano, thyme, sage, fennel, nutmeg, rosemary, calamus and cassia cortex were shown antibacterial effect against S. mutans. The essential oil of oregano among other tested medical herbs and spices showed the most active antimicrobial activity. The essential oil of oregano inhibited the activity of glucosyltransferase from S. mutans. The minimal inhibition concentration of oregano essential oil was determined as 0.05nl/ml. The activity of glucosyltransferase from S. mutans was inhibited in the presence of oregano essential oil.

  • Fungicidal activities of Cassia obtusifolia extracts and their active principles were tested against Botrytis cinerea, Erysiphe graminis, Phytophthora infestans, Puccinia recondita, Pyricularia grisea, and Rhizoctonia solani, and compared with synthetic fungicides and two dihydroxyanthraquinones. At 1 g/l, the chloroform fraction of C. obtusifolia extracts showed fungicidal activity against B. cinerea, E. graminis, P. infestans, and Py. grisea, and the ethyl acetate fraction showed fungicidal activity against E. graminis and P. infestans. Danthrone was chromatographically isolated from the chloroform fraction and showed fungicidal activity against B. cinerea, E. graminis, P. infestans, and Py. grisea with 68, 100, 78, and $91\%$ control values at 0.5 g/l, respectively. Specifically, alizarin and quinizarin inhibited E. graminis, P. infestans, and Py. Grisea, but did not inhibit the growth of P. recondita and R. solani. These results indicate at least one of the fungicidal actions of danthrone.
