  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an intravenous injection case-based clinical performance examination for improvement of problem-solving skill, nursing process application, nursing skill, and learning satisfaction. Method: This study's design was a randomized control group design. A total 93 students (experimental group, 49 control group, 44) who were junior nursing students in South Korea were included in this study. Data were collected from August 12th to 19th, 2010 and analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Result: The mean score of problem solving skills, intravenous injection skill, and learning satisfaction were significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group. However, the mean score of nursing process application was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusion: These results indicate that the case-based clinical performance examination is effective for problem solving skill, nursing skill, and learning satisfaction. Therefore, it is recommended to adapt such teaching methods with integrated nursing practice education for various clinical skills development.

  • Korea has begun institutional education for the gifted since 2002. It has quantitatively expanded, but needs rather qualitative growth. The purpose of this study is investigating a case of scientific education for the gifted in Russia. Three principal of Russian science academy, one educational psychologist, and one education-government official had in-depth interviews for this study. All data from interviews were carefully analyzed. The Science education for the gifted in Russia gives us full assurance that students should reveal their potential ability with the specialized program in school. The Russian run various, particular academies because they try to search for potential ability in manifold areas. The people in charge of scientific education in Korea should make an effort to seek for varied routes in the way of searching for hidden originality and potential ability.

  • This paper explores the educational method of using films as a means to cultivate critical thinking abilities for engineering students. It provides a practical educational model that elaborates on how films could be used as case studies to draw relevant questions, and in the process of answering them, develop students' ability to think critically. The educational model proposes a learning method of enhancing critical thinking abilities through debates and essay writing on issues raised in films. Furthermore, the paper entails concrete learning objectives on critical thinking education, and standards to evaluate levels of enhancement. Through raising the critical thinking abilities of engineering students, this paper will contribute to the utilization of creative ideas in the process of engineering research. Furthermore, the concept of utilizing films as a model for education used in this study could be adapted for fields other than that of engineering.

  • The aim of this study was to confirm the effectiveness of learner-centered teaching models to reduce the dental anxiety. 18 children with age of 10 at the case group and 22 children with age of 10 at the control group was completed. Children from case group were participated in learner-centered oral health education, while those from control group were participated in instructor-led oral health education. Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) at each groups were measured before oral health education, after then, oral health education of two types at each groups were separately conducted during 1-hour, 2 times. Learner-centered oral health education adapted the systematic desensitization (Tell-Show-Do) was conducted for case groups. Instructor-led oral health education was performed by using the presentation file (PPT). The change of Dental Anxiety Scale (DAS) were compare between case and control groups to evaluate the effect of learner-centered teaching type. After oral health education, DAS of the case and control groups at the baseline were 9.61 and 11.14, respectively, and the average DAS decline of case and control groups after oral health education were 2.48 and 0.55, respectively. These findings show that a learner-centered teaching type is an effective oral health program to reduce of dental anxiety in childhood.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate gifted students' verbal-nonverbal interactions in small grouped classes and to classify them into characteristics. For this study, an instrument to measure gifted student's verbal-nonverbal interactions was developed. The subjects were 16 students of 5th and 6th grades at H-area gifted center in rural area. Video recorded was classified each 5minutes by researchers. The results were as follows; First, verbal interactions were about 27% and non-verbal interactions were about 73%. Activities unrelated to learning were about 20%. Second, high achievement gifted students enjoyed verbal interactions including discussions. Third, gifted students can be classified 3 types(Spoken-centered, Written-centered and Played-centered) by interactions. The results revealed that gifted student's verbal-nonverbal interactions played an important role in communication between students and teacher as well as students. Small-grouped instructions according to characteristic and levels of gifted students are needed in gifted science education.

  • In this study, the researcher tried to find out the effect of using a computer interface in teaching speed concept in the elementary school. The 4th and 5th pupils were sampled for this study. The school is located in a sub-urban agricultural area in Korea. In the study, the subjects were divided into two groups: experimental and comparison group. From the pretest, two groups did not show any difference in the understanding of speed concept. The computer interface and the programs to operate the interface and data analysis were developed by researcher. The interface is a modular type and designed ready to connect to microcomputer. The test items were consisted of (1) comparison of speed, (2) change of motion, (3) acceleration, and (4) deceleration. As the result, the researcher found the following results: 1. In case of speed comparison, no significant difference was found between experimental and comparison group. 2. In case of change of motion, acceleration, and deceleration, the experimental groups showed higher achievement both in 4th grade and 5th grade. However, the 4th graders showed more learning than the 5th graders. In conclusion, this study showed that the use of computer interface seemed to be very effective in teaching and learning speed concept in elementary school.
