  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel is designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The flow is visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersonic cascade with 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle is tested for various gaps between the nozzle and cascade. By the experiment, the flow is visualized and static pressure of the cascade was measured. And highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine are observed.

  • This paper reports the single-input-single-output cascade control by using 1-axis attitude control test-bench for quad-rotor UAV. The test-bench was designed as a see-saw shape using 2 motors and propellers, and to enable changing the center of gravity with the center of gyration using ballast. The experiment was carried out by constructing a PID-PID controller having a cascade structure with the test-bench. The SIMC based PID gain tuning process, which makes PID gain tuning easy, was grafted to cascade control. To graft SIMC method, the system parameter estimation result was conducted with second order time delay model by using Matlab-Simulink. Gain tuning was conducted by simulating with estimated system parameter. In this paper, the conventional application of SIMC was conducted and improved application was proposed for improving stability at tuning process.

  • In a double-passage cascade apparatus, only two blades are installed in order to increase the accuracy of experimental result by applying bigger blade than the size of multi-blades on the same apparatus. However, this causes difficulties to make correct periodic condition. In this study, sidewalls are designed to meet periodic condition without removing the operating fluid or adjusting tail boards. Surface Mach number on the blade surface is applied to a responsible variable, and 12 design variables which are related with sidewall profile control are selected. A gradient based optimization is adopted for wall design and CFX-11 is used for the internal flow computation. The computed result shows that it could obtain the same flow structure by modifying only the sidewalls of the double-passage cascade apparatus.

  • Nowadays, demands on super low temperature condition for industrial and commercial uses are thriving. Considering of its wide application in the present and the future, study of the super-low temperature refrigeration system should be actively carried out. This study is aimed to investigate refrigeration capacity and coefficient of performance(COP) of the cascade refrigeration system, as well as to get the system which can reach evaporator temperature of $-70^{\circ}C$. For this purpose, R290 and R170 are charged in high stage and low stage respectively. Finally the characteristics of system using R290 and R170 will be proposed. Additionally, In this experiment, the flow rate of air flowing through the LS evaporator and the compressor inlet pressure were varied to investigate the refrigeration capacity and coefficient of performance characteristics.

  • In a linear cascade experimental apparatus, when it adopts only few blades as well as satisfies the periodic condition between blades, it gives several advantages in experiment. In this study, wall design on a cascade experimental apparatus is conducted to obtain the periodic condition on two blades installed within a passage of which the width is double pitch. The Mach number difference on the blade surface obtained with the periodic and wall condition is chosen as an objective function, and twelve design variables which are related to the wall shape are selected. A wall shape is designed using a gradient-based optimization method. Adjustment of range and weighting function are applied to calculate the objective function to avoid unrealistic evaluation of the objective function. By applying these methods, the computed results show same flow structures obtained with the periodic condition.

  • In order to design and analyze the performance of an axial-flow pump it is necessary to know the flow deviation, deflection angle and pressure loss coefficient as a function of the angle of incidence for the hydrofoil section in use. Because such functions are unique to the particular section, however, general correlation formulae are not available for the multitude of hydrofoil profiles, and such functions must be generated by either experiment or numerical simulation for the given or selected hydrofoil section. The purpose of present study is to generate design correlations for hydrofoils with double circular arc (DCA) camber by numerical analysis using a commercial code, FLUENT. The cascade configuration is determined by a combination of the inlet blade angle, blade thickness, camber angle, and cascade solidity, and a total of 90 cascade configurations are analyzed in this study. The inlet Reynolds number based on the chord and the inlet absolute velocity is fixed at 5${\times}$10$\^$5/. Design correlations are formulated, based on the data at the incidence angle of minimum total pressure loss. The correlations obtained in this way show good agreement with the experiment data collected at NASA with DCA hydrofoils.

  • In order to reduce damages due to cavitation effects and to improve performance of fluid machinery, supercavitation around the cascade and the hydraulic characteristics of supercavitating cascade must be analyzed accurately. And the study on the effects of cavitation on fluid machinery and analysis on the performances of supercavitating hydrofoil through various elements governing flow field are critically important. In this study comparison of experiment results with the computed results of linear theory using singularity method was obtainable. Specially singularity points like sources and vortexes on hydrofoil and freestreamline were distributed to analyze two dimensional flow field of supercavitating cascade, and governing equations of flow field were derived and hydraulic characteristics of cascade were calculated by numerical analysis of the governing equations.

  • This paper presents a optimization of sigmoid activation function parameter using genetic algorithms and pattern recognition analysis in input space of two spirals benchmark problem. To experiment, cascade correlation learning algorithm is used. In the first experiment, normal sigmoid activation function is used to analyze the pattern classification in input space of the two spirals problem. In the second experiment, sigmoid activation functions using different fixed values of the parameters are composed of 8 pools. In the third experiment, displacement of the sigmoid function to determine the value of the three parameters is obtained using genetic algorithms. The parameter values applied to the sigmoid activation functions for candidate neurons are used. To evaluate the performance of these algorithms, each step of the training input pattern classification shows the shape of the two spirals.

  • In this study, we introduce the design methodology of an optimized Interval Type-2 fuzzy controller. The fixed MF design of type-1 based FLC leads to the difficulty of rule-based control design for representing the linguistically uncertain expression. In the Type-2 FLC as the expanded type of Type-1 FLC, we can effectively improve the control characteristic by using the footprint of uncertainty(FOU) of membership function. Type-2 FLC has a robust characteristic in the unknown system with unspecific noise when compared with Type-1 FLC. Through computer simulation as well as practical experiment, we compare their performance by applying both the optimized Type-1 and Type-2 fuzzy cascade controllers to ball and beam system. To evaluate each controller performance, we consider controller characteristic parameters such as maximum overshoot, delay time, rise time, settling time and steady-state error.

  • To examine the influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics, an experiment has been conducted in a four-vane linear cascade. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress were measured using hot wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surfaces liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique was used. The disturbance by the unsteady wake is characterized by the unresolved unsteadiness. The unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion of flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the suction surface increase with increasing unresolved unsteadiness.
