  • A traffic route is an area associated with high risk for accidents due to the flow of heavy traffic. Despite this concern, most studies related to traffic focus solely on traffic distribution. Therefore, there is a need for studies investigating the characteristics of ships' routes and traffic patterns. In this study, an investigation was carried out to analyze the traffic distribution and pattern in 3 major traffic routes for 3 days. For the purpose of the study, based on the prevailing traffic conditions, the route was divided into 10 gate lines. The ships passing through the lines were also classified into either small, medium and large. ND-K-S (normal distribution, kurtosis, and skewness) test was carried out for the traffic distribution at each gate line based on the information analyzed on each traffic route. The analysis of the results obtained from the ND test showed that large vessels have normal distribution, medium sized vessels have satisfied normal distribution in one-way route only while small sized vessels do not have normal distribution. According to the result obtained from the K-S test, normal traffic pattern shows a significant difference between two-way route and one-way route. Results obtained from the K test result shows that in the case of one-way route, vessels have a traffic pattern using a wide range on traffic route. Further analysis shows that vessels concentrate on one side of route in case of two-way route. Results obtained from the S test show that, in case of one-way route, vessels have a normal traffic pattern according to center line. However, analysis pf the results shows that vessels are shifted to the right side of route in case of two-way route. Despite these findings, it should be noted that this study was carried out in only 3 ports, therefore there is need for investigation to be carried out in various routes and conditions in future studies.

  • Background: While many studies have concluded that local traffic density is positively associated with childhood leukemia, the results are inconsistent. We therefore performed a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. Methods: A systematic literature review was carried out using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from January 1979 to December 2013. We selected and assessed journal articles evaluating the relationship between local traffic density and the risk of leukemia in children. The analysis was carried out using STATA version 12.0. Results: A total of 11 articles, including 12 estimates of effect, were included in our meta-analysis. The summary effect size from the random-effects model, expressed as an odds ratio, was 1.03 (95% CI: 0.98-1.09, p=0.002). No significant association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia was found. Similar conclusions were found on subgroup analysis. Conclusions: The results of our meta-analysis suggested no association between traffic density and the risk of childhood leukemia. This implies that living in close proximity to roads with heavy traffic may not increase the risk of childhood leukemia. However, further high-quality prospective trials are needed to support these results.

  • In this paper we consider a local area network (LAN) of dual mode service where one is a token bus and the other is a carrier sense multiple access with a collision detection (CSMA/CD) bus. The objective of the paper is to find the overall cell/packet dropping probability of a dual mode LAN for finite length queue M/G/1(m) traffic. Here, the offered traffic of the LAN is taken to be the equivalent carried traffic of a one-millisecond delay. The concept of a tabular solution for two-dimensional Poisson's traffic of circuit switching is adapted here to find the cell dropping probability of the dual mode packet service. Although the work is done for the traffic of similar bandwidth, it can be extended for the case of a dissimilar bandwidth of a circuit switched network.

  • The prediction of short-term traffic flow is the theoretical basis of intelligent transportation as well as the key technology in traffic flow induction systems. The research on short-term traffic flow prediction has showed the considerable social value. At present, the support vector regression (SVR) intelligent prediction model that is suitable for small samples has been applied in this domain. Aiming at parameter selection difficulty and prediction accuracy improvement, the artificial bee colony (ABC) is adopted in optimizing SVR parameters, which is referred to as the ABC-SVR algorithm in the paper. The simulation experiments are carried out by comparing the ABC-SVR algorithm with SVR algorithm, and the feasibility of the proposed ABC-SVR algorithm is verified by result analysis. Continuously, the simulation experiments are carried out by comparing the ABC-SVR algorithm with particle swarm optimization SVR (PSO-SVR) algorithm and genetic optimization SVR (GA-SVR) algorithm, and a better optimization effect has been attained by simulation experiments and verified by statistical test. Simultaneously, the simulation experiments are carried out by comparing the ABC-SVR algorithm and wavelet neural network time series (WNN-TS) algorithm, and the prediction accuracy of the proposed ABC-SVR algorithm is improved and satisfactory prediction effects have been obtained.

  • In this paper, we classify the transfer method of overflowed traffic from microcell to macrocell in micor/macro overlaid PCS system using CDMA technology, and analyze the traffic characteristics of traffic transfer methods. Soft-handoff is charaterized by communications with a new bastation on the same CDMA frequency assignment before terminating communications with the old basestation. Therefore, soft-handoff is superior to hard-handoff with respect to Grade Of Service, but it decreases the carried traffic of system. Therefore, we analyze the effect of soft-handoff with respect to handoff area variation. In order to analyze soft-handoff effect, we resolve the probability of dewelling time in soft-handoff area, and calculates the carried traffic of microcell using this result.

  • This study investigated the effectiveness of traffic safety education by integrated activities on children's traffic safety knowledge. Subjects were 55 kindergarten children aged 5 years old. The subjects were divided into experimental and control groups. Traffic safety education by integrated activities were applied in the experimental group for 6 weeks. The traffic safety knowledge test was administered to the experimental and control groups for pre-test and post-test analyses. ANCOVA was carried out for both groups to verify the hypothesis of this study. There were statistically significant differences of the children's traffic safety knowledge score including walking, bike, and automobile between the experimental and control groups. To conclude, traffic safety education by integrated activities was very effective to increase children's traffic safety knowledge.

  • Traffic congestion has become a serious problem with the recent exponential increase in the number of vehicles. In urban areas, almost all traffic congestion occurs at intersections. One of the ways to solve this problem is road expansion, but it is difficult to realize in urban areas because of the high cost and long construction period. In such cases, traffic signal control is a reasonable method for reducing traffic jams. In an actual situation, the traffic flow changes randomly and its randomness makes the control of traffic signals difficult. A prediction of traffic jams is, therefore, necessary and effective for reducing traffic jams. In addition, an autonomous distributed (stand-alone) point control of each traffic light individually is better than the wide and/or line control of traffic lights from the perspective of real-time control. This paper describes a stochastic optimum control of crossroads and multi-way traffic signals. First, a stochastic model of traffic flows and traffic jams is constructed by using a Bayesian network. Secondly, the probabilistic distributions of the traffic flows are estimated by using a cellular automaton, and then the probabilistic distributions of traffic jams are predicted. Thirdly, optimum traffic signals of crossroads and multi-way intersection are searched by using a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm to realize real-time traffic control. Finally, simulations are carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the real-time stochastic optimum control of traffic signals.

  • This paper proposes a high performance QoS (Quality of Service) traffic transmission scheme to provide real-time multimedia services in wireless networks. This scheme is based on both a traffic estimation of the mean rate and a header compression method by dividing this network model into two parts, core RTP/UDP/IP network and wireless access parts, using the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. The improvement achieved by the scheme means that it can be designed to include a means of provisioning the high performance QoS strategy according to the requirements of each particular traffic flow by adapting the header compression for real-time multimedia data. A performance evaluation was carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed traffic transmission scheme.

  • In the telematics system, a reasonable path search time should be guaranteed from a great number of user's queries, even though the optimal path with minimized travel time might be continuously changed by the traffic flows. Thus, the path search method should consider traffic flows of the roads and the search time as well. However, the existing path search methods are not able to cope efficiently with the change of the traffic flows and to search rapidly paths simultaneously. This paper proposes a new path search method for fast computation. It also reflects the traffic flows efficiently. Especially, in order to simplify the computation of variable heuristic values, it employs a simplification method for estimating values of traffic-adaptable heuristics. The experiments are carried out with the $A^*$ algorithm and the proposed method in terms of the execution time, the number of node accesses and the accuracy. The results obtained from the experiments show that the method achieves very fast execution time and the reasonable accuracy as well.
