  • Carbonyl iron (CI) is successfully incorporated as an additive into a polystyrene (PS) matrix via a highenergy ball milling method, under an n-hexane medium with volume fractions between 1% and 5% for electromagnetic interference shielding applications by the combination of magnetic CI and an insulating PS matrix. The morphology and the dispersion of CI are investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, which indicates a uniform distribution of CI in the PS matrix after 2 h of milling. The thermal behavior results indicate no significant degradation of the PS when there is a slight increase in the onset temperature with the addition of CI powder, when compared to the as-received PS pellet. After milling, there are no interactions between the CI and the PS matrix, as confirmed by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. In this study, the milled CI-PS powder is extruded to make filaments, and can have potential applications in the 3-D printing industry.

  • Diosgenin (25 (R) - spirost-5-en-3$\beta$ -ol) was oxidized with 2,3-dichloro -5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone to form 25(R)-1,4,6-spirostatrien-3-one (1) as rigid cyclic $\alpha$,$\beta$-unsaturated carbonyl compound. This compound was reacted with $H_{2}O_{2}$, m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (mCPBA), NaOCl in the presence with (R,R)- or (S,S)-Jacobsen catalyst, tert-butyl-hydroperoxide (TBHP) in Mo$(CO)_{6}$, and in VO $(acac)_{2}$ catalyst, respectively, 25(R) -1,4,6-spirostatrien -3-one (1) was reduced with $NaBH_{4}$ L-Selectride, $LiAIH_{4}$,$BH_{3}$ $\cdot$$(CH_{3})_{2}S$, Superhydride, Red-Al, and lithium tri-tert-butoxyaluminium hydride. And 25(R)-4,6-spirostadien-3$\beta$-ol (4) was treated with $H_{2}O_{2}$, mCPBA, TBHP in D - (-) - and L-(+)-diisopropyltar-trate and $Ti(OiPr)_{4}$ condition (Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation), TBHP in $Mo(CO)_{6}$, and in $VO(acac)_{2}$ catalyst, respectively.

  • The poly(methylsilene) (1) was modified with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalyst and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, Mo, W) catalyst, producing the highly cross-linked isoluble polymer and the lowly cross-linked soluble polymer, respectively. An interrelationship between molecular weight and percent ceramic residue yield with metal within the respective group was not found. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weight and lower percent ceramic residue yield than the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts do. The catalytic activity of group 4 metallocene combinations appears to be higher at ∼100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls. The pyrolysis of the modified 1 yielded SiC ceramic.

  • The oligo(methylsilene) (1) was treated with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalysts and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, W) catalysts, producing the modified, cross-linked polymers. The average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yields of modified polymers increase as the catalyst goes down from Ti to Hf and similarly as the catalyst goes down from Cr to W. An interrelationship between average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yield is found within the respective group of catalysts, but is not observed as the catalyst goes down from Ti to W. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weights and similar percent ceramic residue yields as compared to the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts. The catalytic activities of group 4 metallocene combinations appear to be higher -100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls.

  • To use the filter materials for reduction of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke, the bead type cation and anion exchangers were synthesized by the suspension polymerization of GMA and DVB followed by the subsequent functionalization with sodium sulfite and diethylamine, respectively. FT-IR/ATR was used to characterize functionalized copolymer formation by sulfonation and amination, and the morphology change of ion exchangers according to the adsorption of cigarette mainstream smoke were observed by SEM. Ion exchange capacity, functionalization yield and adsorption properties of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke were investigated. The highest functionalization yields and ion exchange capacity were obtained at 5 wt% DVB content in co-monomer. The adsorption amount of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke of anion exchanger was higher than that of cation exchanger because of its electron delocalization in carbonyl group. The adsorption efficiency was increased in the presence of moisture. This results indicated that the anion exchanger was applicable for cigarette filter material because of its large ion exchange capacity and rapid ion exchange reaction.

  • CoMFA and CoMSIA model were derived and reviewed on the insecticidal activities of N-substituents (X) on the imidazol ring in imidacloprid analogues at the different alignment condition. Regarding the predictability ($q^2$ or $r_{cv.}^2$) and fitness ($r_{ncv.}^2$) of the two optimized models, the atom based fit (A) alignments were better than that of the field fit (F) alignment and, on the other hand, CoMSIA (A10) model was better than CoMFA (A5) model. Also, from the most optimized CoMSIA (A10) model, the insecticidal activity by N-substituents (X) was dependence on the electrostatic field and H-bond acceptor field. It is predicted that, from the contour maps with optimized CoMSIA (A10) model, H-bond acceptors at ortho- and meta- position will contribute for improving of insecticidal activities and, as the functional groups of carbonyl oxygen atom are charged negatively and positively charged at the ortho- position of benzyl group, insecticidal activities will also be improved.

  • The substitution reaction of Fe$(CO)_5$ by ethylene has been studied for plausible intermediates by means of extended Huckel calculations. Among various reaction mechanisms the favorable reaction pathway is via a dissociative mechanism in which ethylene approaches to Fe$(CO)_4$ unit. For Fe$(CO)_4$ fragment, the square planar conformation is found to be the most stable form by the extended Huckel calculations. Our calculations show that ethylene attacks square planar intermediate formed by removing one carbonyl from Fe$(CO)_5$ and then the unstable species thus formed is distored to the most stable trigonal bipyramid with the ethylene lying in the equatorial plane.

  • A general route for convergent syntheses of morindaparvin derivatives with 1,2-methylene-dioxyanthraquinone pattern is described. The anion of 2-methoxycyclohexanone (3), generated with lithium cyclohexylisopropylamine at -78 $^{\circ}C$, was sulfenylated with phenyl phenylthiosulfonate followed by elimination to afford ${\alpha},\;{\beta}$ -unsaturated carbonyl system 8. 6-Methoxy-2-cyclohexen-l-one (8) was condensed with the four phthalide sulfones derivatives 10a-d, to provide morindaparvin derivatives, 1a-d.

  • The anionic transition metal hydrides $(HW(CO)_4P(OMe)_3\;^-,\;HW(CO)_5\;^-,\;HCr(CO)_5\;^-,\;HFe(CO)_4\;^-)$ react with transition metal alkyl $(CpMo(CO)_3(CH_3)$ to yield $CH_4\;and\;CH_3CHO$ in addition to the inorganic products $(CpMo(Co)_3\;^-$, etc.). The reaction of these anionic metal hydrides with CpMo(CO)3{CH2CH(CH2)2} may lead to an elucidation of the reaction mechanisms involved; the organic product distributions are among $CH_4,\;CH_2\;=\;CHCH_2CH_3$, and $CH_3CH(CH_2)_2$, depending upon the anionic metal hydride used. These anionic metal hydrides also are reported to undergo a hydride-halide exchange reaction with organic halides; therefore, these similar reactions have been compared in terms of leaving group ability $(CpMo(CO)_3\;^-\;vs.\;Br^-)$ and the mechanistic pathways.
