Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have been grown on Ni-coated TiN/Si substrate by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition using $H_2/CH_4$ mixture gas. We have investigated the Effect of process parameters on the growth of CNT. During the growth, microwave power, pressure, and growth temperature were varied from 300 W to 700 W, 10 Torr to 30 Torr, and 300 $^{\circ}C$ to 700 $^{\circ}C$. respectively. Then we controlled the size of CNTs. The structure of CNT was sensitively dependent on the process parameters.
Nano-wear behavior of amorphous carbon films was studied by Atomic Force Microscopy. The a-C films are deposited on Si(100) substrate by DC magnetron sputtering method. The influences of different surface roughness on the nano-wear are investigated. Nano-wear tests were carried out using a very sharp diamond coated tip. Its spring constant was 1.6 N/m and radius of curvature was 110 nm. Normal force used in the wear tests ranged 0 to 400 nN. It was found that surface depression occurred during scratching because of plastic deformation and abrasive wear (cutting St ploughing). Wear depth increased linearly with normal force. Changing the surface roughness variables according to the bias pulse control, the less surface roughness decreased the wear depth. The thickness did not affect the wear resistance.

While there are plenty of studies on synthesizing semiconducting germanium nanowires (Ge NWs) by vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process, it is difficult to inject dopants into them with uniform dopants distribution due to vapor-solid (VS) deposition. In particular, as precursors and dopants such as germane ($GeH_4$), phosphine ($PH_3$) or diborane ($B_2H_6$) incorporate through sidewall of nanowire, it is hard to obtain the structural and electrical uniformity of Ge NWs. Moreover, the drastic tapered structure of Ge NWs is observed when it is synthesized at high temperature over $400^{\circ}C$ because of excessive VS deposition. In 2006, Emanuel Tutuc et al. demonstrated Ge NW pn junction using p-type shell as depleted layer. However, it could not be prevented from undesirable VS deposition and it still kept the tapered structures of Ge NWs as a result. Herein, we adopt $C_2H_2$ gas in order to passivate Ge NWs with carbon sheath, which makes the entire Ge NWs uniform at even higher temperature over $450^{\circ}C$. We can also synthesize non-tapered and uniformly doped Ge NWs, restricting incorporation of excess germanium on the surface. The Ge NWs with carbon sheath are grown via VLS process on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate coated 2 nm Au film. Thin Au film is thermally evaporated on a $Si/SiO_2$ substrate. The NW is grown flowing $GeH_4$, HCl, $C_2H_2$ and PH3 for n-type, $B_2H_6$ for p-type at a total pressure of 15 Torr and temperatures of $480{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals clear surface of the Ge NWs synthesized at $500^{\circ}C$. Raman spectroscopy peaked at about ~300 $cm^{-1}$ indicates it is comprised of single crystalline germanium in the core of Ge NWs and it is proved to be covered by thin amorphous carbon by two peaks of 1330 $cm^{-1}$ (D-band) and 1590 $cm^{-1}$ (G-band). Furthermore, the electrical performances of Ge NWs doped with boron and phosphorus are measured by field effect transistor (FET) and they shows typical curves of p-type and n-type FET. It is expected to have general potentials for development of logic devices and solar cells using p-type and n-type Ge NWs with carbon sheath.
HTGR using a TRISO coated particles as nuclear raw fuel material can be used to produce clean hydrogen gas and process heat for a next-generation energy source. For these purposes, a TRISO coated particle was prepared with 3 pyro-carbon (buffer, IPyC, and OPyC) layers and 1 silicone carbide (SiC) layer using a CVD technique on a spherical $UO_2$ kernel surface as a fissile material. In this study, a spherical $UO_2$ particle was prepared using a modified sol-gel method with a vibrating nozzle system, and TRISO coating fabrication was carried out using a fluidized bed reactor with coating gases, such as acetylene, propylene, and methyltrichlorosilane (MTS). As the results of this study, a spherical $UO_2$ kernel with a sphericity of 1+0.06 was obtained, and the main process parameters in the $UO_2$ kernel preparation were the well-formed nature of the spherical ADU liquid droplets and the suitable temperature control in the thermal treatment of intermediate compounds in the ADU, $UO_3$, and $UO_2$ conversions. Also, the important parameters for the TRISO coating procedure were the coating temperature and feed rate of the feeding gas in the PyC layer coating, the coating temperature, and the volume fraction of the reactant and inert gases in the SiC deposition.

Vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes (VCNT) have attracted much attention due to their unique structural, mechanical and electronic properties, and possess many advantages for a wide range of multifunctional applications such as field emission displays, heat dissipation and potential energy conversion devices. Surface modification of the VCNT plays a fundamental role to meet specific demands for the applications and control their surface property. Recent studies have been focused on the improvement of the electron emission property and the structural modification of CNTs to enable the mass fabrication, since the VCNT considered as an ideal candidate for various field emission applications such as lamps and flat panel display devices, X-ray tubes, vacuum gauges, and microwave amplifiers. Here, we investigate the effect of surface morphology of the VCNT by water vapor exposure and coating materials on field emission property. VCNT with various height were prepared by thermal chemical vapor deposition: short-length around $200{\mu}m$, medium-length around $500{\mu}m$, and long-length around 1 mm. The surface morphology is modified by water vapor exposure by adjusting exposure time and temperature with ranges from 2 to 10 min and from 60 to 120oC, respectively. Thin films of SiO2 and W are coated on the structure-modified VCNT to confirm the effect of coated materials on field emission properties. As a result, the surface morphology of VCNT dramatically changes with increasing temperature and exposure time. Especially, the shorter VCNT change their surface morphology most rapidly. The difference of field emission property depending on the coating materials is discussed from the point of work function and field concentration factor based on Fowler-Nordheim tunneling.
Magnesium secondary batteries are attracting much attention due to their potential to replace conventionally used lithium ion batteries. Magnesium secondary battery cathode material Mo6S8 were synthesized by molten salt synthesis method and PVC as a carbon materials were added to improve electrochemical properties. Crystal structure, size and surface of the synthesized anode materials were measured through XRD and SEM. Charge-discharge profiles and rate capabilities were measured by battery test system. 2.81 wt% PVC coated sample showed the best rate capabilities of 85.8 mAh/g at 0.125 C-rate, 69.2 mAh/g at 0.5 C-rate, and 60.5 mAh/g at 1 C-rate.
In this research, C/SiC composites, i.e. activated carbon coated with SiC obtained from dichlorodimethylsilane(DDS) and hydrogen, have been made by chemical vapor infiltration(CVI) in a fluidized bed reactor. Activated carbons of sizes of 4~12, 12~20, and 20~40 mesh were used. After deposition the surface area, the amount and the shape of deposit of each sample were observed at different concentrations of reactant DDS, sizes of activated carbon, reaction pressures and reaction times. The experimental results showed that uniform deposition in the pores of sample was obtained at a lower concentration of DDS and a lower pressure. Additionally, from the observation that the pore diameter and the surface area have minimum values at a certain time of deposition, it was known that deposition occurred inside of the pore at first and then on the outside of particle. Small particles of SiC were deposited uniformly on the surface of activated carbon at lower DDS concentrations and lower reaction pressures. The results were confirmed by SEM, TGA, the pore size distribution analyzer and BET.
The growth of carbon nanotubes(CNTs) in anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) template and their application to a field emitter are described. AAO templates were fabricated by anodizing bulk aluminum and sputtered thin Al film on Nb-coated Si wafers. After Co catalyst had been electrochemically deposited into the bottom of the pores in AAO template, CNTs were grown by pyrolyzing $C_2H_2$. Depending on the reaction conditions, CNTs grew up to or over the top of the pores in AAO template with different structures. The morphology and structure of CNTs were observed with a scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. The diameter of CNTs strongly depended on the size of the pores in AAO template and the growing conditions. The electron field emission measurement of the samples resulted in the turn-on field of 1.9-2.2 $V/{\mu}m$ and the field enhancement factor of 2450-5200. The observation of high field enhancement factors is explained in terms of low field screening effect.

Circumventing problems lying in the conventional lithographic techniques, we devised a new method for the fabrication of nanometer scale metal wires inspired by the unique characteristics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Since carbon nanotubes could act as masks when CNT-coated thin Au/Ti layer on a SiO2 surface was physically etched by low energy argon ion bombardment 9ion milling), Au/Ti nano-wires were successfully formed just below the CNTs exactly duplicating their lateral shapes. Cross-sectional analysis by transmission electron microscopy revealed that the edge of the metal wire was very sharply developed indicating the great difference in the milling rates between the CNTs and the metal layer as well as the good directionality of the ion milling. We could easily find a few nanometer-wide Au/Ti wires among the wires of various width. After the formation of nano-wires, the CNTs could be pushed away from the metal nano-wire by atomic force microscopy, The lateral force for the removal of the CNTs are dependent upon the width and shape of the wires. Resistance of the metal nano-wires without the CNTs was also measured through the micro-contacts definted by electron beam lithography. since this CNT-based lithographic technique is, in principle, applicable to any kinds of materials, it can be very useful in exploring the fields of nano-science and technology, especially when it is combines with the CNT manipulation techniques.
Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes were synthesized on Ni-coated Si substrates using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The grain size of Ni thin films was varied with the RF power density during the RF magnetron sputtering process. It was found that the diameter, growth rate, and density of carbon nanotubes could be controlled systematically by the grain size of Ni thin films. With decreasing the grain size of Ni thin films, the diameter of the nanotubes decreased, whereas the growth rate and density increased. High-resolution transmission electron microscope images clearly demonstrated synthesized nanotubes to be multiwalled. The number of graphitized wall decreased with decreasing the diameter. Field emission properties will be further presented.
