  • Rapid industrial development in recent times has increased the demand for light-weight materials with high strength and structural integrity. In this context, carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) composite materials are being extensively used. However, laminated CFRPs develop faults during impact because CFRPs are composed of mixed carbon fiber and epoxy. Moreover, their fracturing behavior is very complicated and difficult to interpret. In this paper, the effect of the direction of lamination in CFRP on the absorbed impact energy and impact strength were evaluated, including symmetric ply (0°/0°, −15°/+15°, −30°/+30°, −45°/+45°, and −90°/+90°) and asymmetric ply (0°/15°, 0°/30°, 0°/45°, and 0°/90°), through drop-weight impact tests. Further, the thermal properties of the specimens were measured using an infrared camera. Correlations between the absorbed impact energy, impact strength, and thermal properties as determined by the drop-weight impact tests were analyzed. These analyses revealed that the absorbed impact energy of the specimens with asymmetric laminated angles was greater than that of the specimens with symmetric laminated angles. In addition, the asymmetry ply absorbed more impact energy than the symmetric ply. Finally, the absorbed impact energy was inversely proportional to the thermal characteristics of the specimens.

  • In this work, the grow of carbon nanotube (CNT) on carbon fiber was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of CNT-carbon fibers-reinforced composites (CNT-CFRPs) enhanced with decreasing the CNT content. The excessive CNT content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system. In conclusion, the optimum CNT content on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the CNT-CFRPs.

  • The purpose of this study was the Development of Retrofit Method for Beam Using Steel Plate Reinforced by Fiber Sheet.1. Additional reinforcements are not needed in the joining area of slab and beam web.2. Beam using carbon fiber reinforced plastic displays low effects in shearing effect.3. Beams reinforced steel plate by epoxy effect the capacities of strength. But the capacities of strength are rapidly reduced when adhesive surface be omitted. Thus details are needed in this case.4.Retrofit method for beam using steel plate reinforced by fiber sheet with epoxy rosin improves the capacities of strength and the initial stiffness, shows a large transformation since the maximum load likewise may be excellent to the shearing reinforcement.

  • The fiber composites have been investigated as lightweight structure material platforms for aerospace applications because their strength can be enhanced by adding reinforcement without a significant increase in weight. In this study, the fabrication and characterization of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced glass fiber composites are demonstrated to enhance the tensile strength of longitudinal direction along the glass fibers. Due to the reinforcement of CNT in epoxy layers, the yield strength of fiber/epoxy composites is enhanced by about 10 %. Furthermore, using scanning electron microscopy, analysis of fracture surfaces shows that mixed CNT in epoxy layers acts as necking agents between fractured surfaces of fiber/epoxy; thereby, initiation and evolution of crack across fiber composite can be suppressed by CNT necking between fractured surfaces.

  • This study has been investigated the Influence of layer thickness on the mechanical properties of cross laminated carbon fiber/epoxy composites. And also the difference of mechanical properties between cross laminated composites of unidirectional prepreg and fabric prepreg has been investigated. Experimental results are showed that the Interlamina Shear Strength(ILSS) of cross laminated carbon fiber/epoxy composites decreased with increasing thickness of unit ply and the decree of delamination in the laminated composites increased as ILSS decreased. Fracture toughness and impact values were found to increase as delamination occurs to some extent in the laminated composites. It Is also shown thats mechanical properties of cross laminates from unidirectional prepreg were better than those of cross laminates from fabric prepreg.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of the friction and wear according to the amount of ion-irradiation for the carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP). Unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites were fabricated with epoxy resin as a matrix and carbon fiber as a reinforcement, and its surface was modified by the ion-assisted reaction. When the amount of ion-irradiation was $1{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$, the friction coefficients of composites were about 0.1 and the wear mode was stable, whereas, the friction coefficient of non-treatment composites were about 0.16 and the wear mode was very unstable. But if the amount of ion-irradiation was $5{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$, the friction coefficients were higher rather than that of $1{\times}10^{16}$ ions/$cm^2$. Consequently, the amount of ion-irradiation was not in proportion to the friction coefficients, and it was conformed that the optimal conditions would exist between broth of them.

  • The studies of particulate reinforced composites have been conducted for many years. The nanocomposites to be studied vigorously in recent years are one of them. We fabricated and studied multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWNT)/epoxy composites which may be useful as matrix for continuous fiber-reinforced composites. We investigated tensile properties of MWNT/epoxy composites as a function of MWNT concentration, which were prepared by the fabrication method established in this study. Tensile stiffness and strength increased 19% at 0.5 wt% and 12% at 0.2 wt%, respectively. We observed the reaggregation phenomenon of MWNTS during curing, which should be controlled to obtain higher tensile properties.

  • The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is very essential for commercial and military purposes. We fabricated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/epoxy composites and studied the electromagnetic characteristics of the composites before we study the characteristics of MWNT-added glass fiber-reinforced composites. After setting up the fabrication process, we measured the permittivity of MWNT/epoxy composites with process variables and MWNT concentrations in X-band (8.2GHz~12.4GHz). We also observed re-aggregation phenomenon of MWNTs and investigated its effect on the permittivity. The permittivity of the composites was influenced by the degree of dispersion of MWNTs and increased almost linearly as MWNT concentration increases.

  • Using a commercial epoxy/carbon fiber composite prepreg (DMS 2224) as a model system, the cure kinetics of vitrifying thermoset system were analyzed by isothermal and dynamic-heating experiments. Focusing on the processing condition of high performance composite systems, a phenomenological kinetic model was developed by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and reaction kinetics theories. The model system exhibited a limited degree of cure as a function of isothermal temperature seemingly due to the diffusion-controlled reaction rates. The diffusion-controlled cure reaction was incorporated in the development of the kinetic model, and the model parameters were determined from isothermal experiments. The first order reaction was confirmed from the characteristic shape of isothermal cure thermograms, and the activation energy wes 78.43 kJ/mol. Finally, the proposed model was used to predict a complex autoclave thermal condition, which was composed of several isothermal and dynamic-heating stages.
