  • In order to investigate the light fastness of amino azo disperse dyes, some kinds of disperse dyes were prepared and dyed to polyester fabric under the different conditions, such as single or mixture state. After the dyed fabric was irradiated with carbon arc light for several hours, the color differences and K/S values of fabric were measured. The light fastness of amino azo disperse dye was decreased by the introduction of OH group to the dye molecule. But when the amino azo dye was mixed with the anthraquinone disperse dye, the light fastness was increased. It was considered that the dye molecules were aggregated on account of hydrogen bonding via OH groups, resulting the decrease of surface area of dye molecule which might be irradiated by the light.

  • In molding of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, it is very difficult to impregnate between the reinforcements and the matrix since the matrix has a high melting temperature and high viscosity. Therefore, most of composite molding processes are divided in the manufacturing processes of intermediate materials called prepreg and the forming of products from intermediate materials. The divided process requires additional facilities and thermoforming, and they increase the cycle time and cost of composite products. These problems can be resolved by combining the continuous fiber-reinforced composite molding process with injection molding. However, when a composite material is manufactured by inserting woven fabric into the injection mold, poor impregnation occurs on the surface of the molded product. It affects the properties of the composites. In this paper, through an impregnation experiment using cores with different heat transfer rates and pore densities, the reason for the poor impregnation was confirmed, and molding experiments were conducted to produce composite with improved surface impregnation by inserting the mesh. And also, the surface impregnation and deformation of composites molded using different types of mesh were compared with each other.

  • Structural battery has been researched extensively to combine the functions of the battery and structure without gravimetric or volumetric increments compared to their individual components. The main idea is to employ carbon fabric as the reinforcement and electrode, glass fabric as the separator, and solid-state electrolyte which can transfer load. However, state-of-the-art solid-state electrolytes do not have sufficient load carrying functionality and exhibiting appropriate ion conductivity simultaneously. Therefore, in this research, a system which has both battery and load carrying capabilities using glass fabric separator and liquid electrolyte was devised and tested to investigate the potential and feasibility of this structural battery system and observe electric properties. It was observed that elongating separator decreased electrical behavior stability. A possible cause of this phenomenon was the elongated glass fabric separator inadequately preventing the penetration of small particles of the cathode material into the anode. This problem was verified additionally by using a commercial separator. The characteristic of the glass fabric and the interface between the electrode and glass fabric needed to be further studied for the realization of such a load carrying structural battery system.

  • In this study, the effects of sulphuric acid on the mechanical performance and the durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) specimens were investigated. The carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) fabrics were used to evaluate the performances of the confined and unconfined ECC specimens under static and cyclic loading in the acidic environment. In addition, the use of CFRP and BFRP fabrics as a rehabilitation technique was also studied for the specimens exposed to the sulphuric acid environment. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber with a fraction of 2% was used in the research. Two different PVA-ECC concretes were produced using low lime fly ash (LCFA) and high lime fly ash (HCFA) with the fly ash-to-OPC ratio of 1.2. Unwrapped PVA-ECC specimens were also produced as a reference concrete and all concrete specimens were continuously immersed in 5% sulphuric acid solution ($H_2SO_4$). The mechanical performance and the durability of specimens were evaluated by means of the visual inspection, weight change, static and cyclic loading, and failure mode. In addition, microscopic changes of the PVA-ECC specimens due to sulphuric acid attack were also assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to understand the macroscale behavior of the specimens. Results indicated that PVA-ECC specimens produced with low lime fly ash (LCFA) showed superior performance than the specimens produced with high lime fly ash (HCFA) in the acidic environment. In addition, confinement of ECC specimens with BFRP and CFRP fabrics significantly improved compressive strength, ductility, and durability of the specimens. PVA-ECC specimens wrapped with carbon FRP fabric showed better mechanical performance and durability properties than the specimens wrapped with basalt FRP fabric. Both FRP materials can be used as a rehabilitation material in the acidic environment.

  • The object of this study is to design the Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS) having sandwich structures in the X-band ($8.2{\sim}12.4GHz$) frequencies. Glass fabric/epoxy composites containing conductive carbon blacks and carbon fabric/epoxy composites were used for the face sheets. Polyurethane(PU) foams containing multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) were used for the core. Their permittivities in the X-band were measured using the transmission line technique. The reflection loss characteristics for multi-layered sandwich structures were calculated using the theory of transmission and reflection in a multi-layered medium. Three kinds of specimens were fabricated and their reflection losses in the X-band were measured using the free space technique. Experimental results were in good agreements with simulated ones in 10dB absorbing bandwidth.

  • Through-the-thickness properties of thick-walled cylindrical composites are required to determine structural performances because interlaminar tensile stress is primarily responsible for structural failure of the composites during their curing process. It is necessary for evaluating the tensile properties to find individual test methods to find appropriate methods because there are no recognised international standards(test methods and test specifications) available for generating reliable tensile properties in the direction. This paper has performed an experimental Study to measure that properties of carbon fabric/phenolic composites are produced by domestic company. Several test methods using an aluminum specimen were compared and evaluated. The best method, found out, was adopted to measure transverse through-the-thickness properties of composite materials. The results show that strain trends on four faces of composite specimen are the same.

  • Cellulose-based rayon fibers or fabrics can be thermally decomposed very fast within a narrow temperature window during stabilization process. Therefore the stabilization stage is critically important for producing rayon-based carbon fibers. Consequently, in the present study the effects of isothermal stabilization and ultrasonic cleaning on the weight loss, chemical composition, microstructure, and fabric texture of cellulose-based rayon fabrics were explored. The temperature of the isothermal stabilization process performed in the range of $200{\sim}240^{\circ}C$ influenced the processing time, carbon and oxygen contents, cellulose structural change, and fabric texture. The ultrasonic cleaning, which was conducted prior to the stabilization process, played a role in shortening the stabilization time, increasing the carbon contents, decreasing the oxygen contents, and changing the XRD pattern. Also, it was considered that the ultrasonic cleaning contributed to retarding the weight loss, to reducing the thermal shrinkage, and further to reducing the fast physical change of rayon fabrics.

  • This paper decided the 3D shape of sandwich composite for the cradle of CT instrument, suggested the stacking sequence with satisfaction on structural criteria using the Finite Element Analysis, and introduced the manufacturing method to meet the X-ray transmission performance uniformly. The design of Cradle was considered the space between other parts, fixing method, and assembly condition with headrest part. It is decided the stacking sequence to meet the criteria that the deflection at the end point is less than 20 mm when it is applied to 135 kg load at the specific locations. In site of manufacturing method, at first, it is used the hand lay-up for carbon UD and carbon fabric/polyester resin, but it had the ununiform X-ray transmission performance due to the void and excess resin. For solving this problem, it was replaced with the infusion method for the first layer of face material and the application of carbon UD or fabric/epoxy resin prepreg for other layers. Therefor, the property of X-ray transmission was improved.

  • In order to improve dye uptime and wash fastness on dyeing of cotton fabrics with Amur cork tree, twitter ionic groups, acid groups, hydrophobic groups or cross linkage were introduced into cotton fabrics. Results obtained were as follows, 1 The optimum modification of cotton fabrics was carbosy methylation in the water solution containing 15% sodium chloroacetate and 15% sodium hydroxide and then introducing hydrophobic groups by treating in the solution containing $30m\ell$ DMSO and $3m\ell$ 2,4-TDI 2. Numbers of carbon, diisocyanate group than monoisocyanate group and aromatic compound than aliphatic compound in introduced hydrophobic groups were effective. 3. The dye uptake and wash fastness wore enhanced significantly by treating only with 2,4-TDI. 4. The wash fastness seems to correlate to the degree of swelling of the fabric during washing and also depend on the Interaction between dyes and acid groups as well as hydrophobic groups.
