  • Electroless nickel platings on carbon substrate were investigated for porous MCFC electrode applications. Acidic bath and alkaline bath were used in electroless nickel plating on carbon substrates. The rate of electroless plating in alkaline bath was faster than that in acidic bath. As pH was increased, the deposition rate was increased in both baths and the content of phosphorus in nickel deposit was decreased. The residual stresses of nickel deposit from acidic bath showed the compressive stress and on the other hand those from alkaline bath showed the high tensile stress. High tensile internal stress in nickel deposit caused the cracks over pH 11. Thiourea was added to both acidic and alkaline bath. The deposition rate of nickel was increased upto 0.5 ppm of thiourea and decreased. The maximum concentration of thiourea for the electroless nickel plating on carbon substrate was 1.5 ppm in both acidic and alkaline bath. Succinic acid was added to acidic bath. Addition of succinic acid up to 5 g/L increased the deposition rate of nickel and beyond which the deposition rate was decreased and maintained.

  • The kinetics of direct methanation over activated charcoal-supported molybdenum catalyst at 30 bar was studied in a cylindrical fixed-bed reactor. When the temperature was not higher than 400℃, the CO conversion increased with increasing temperature according to the Arrhenius law of reaction kinetics. While XRD and Raman analysis showed that Mo was present as Mo oxides after reduction or methanation, TEM and XPS analysis showed that Mo2C was formed after methanation depending on the loading of Mo precursor. When the temperature was as high as 500℃, the CO conversion was dependent not only on the Arrhenius law but also on the catalyzed reaction by nanoparticles, which came off from the reactor and thermocouple by metal dusting. These nanoparticles were made of Ni, Fe, Cr and alloy, and attributed to the formation of carbon deposit on the wall of the reactor and on the surface of the thermocouple. The carbon deposit consisted of amorphous and disordered carbon filaments.

  • A water-cooled calorimeter chamber with 8 cooling channels based on KSR-III sub-scale chamber has been designed and manufactured. One dimensional empirical correlation has been used at the design stage and full three-dimensional CFD analysis has been conducted to confirm the cooling condition for hot fire test is safe. Predicted heat flux is accurate around the nozzle throat when the thermal resistance of carbon deposit is considered. However relatively large difference is observed in chamber part.

  • The addition of organic compound containing -COOH, X$800_2$, -CHO group such as formic acid, formamide, formaldehyde or diethyleneamine to a chromium electroplating bath results in a chromium deposit in which carbon is incorporated. Such deposits have fewer defects than chromium layers produced by a conventional method. It was found that the as-deposited layers were amorphous and auger electron spectroscopy (AES) showed that carbon is distributed uniformly in the deposit. During heat treatment, Cr-C deposits began to crystallize at $400^{\circ}C$, and at $800^{\circ}C$ they were crystallized into chromium carbides and oxides. The effects of current density, amount of additives, applied current waveform on Cr-C alloy electroplating were examined.

  • Characteristics of micro carbon structures fabricated with laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LCVD) are investigated. An argon ion laser (λ=514.5nm) and ethylene gas were utilized as the energy source and precursor, respectively. The laser beam was focused onto a graphite substrate to produce carbon deposit through thermal decomposition of the precursor. Average growth rate of a carbon rod increased for increasing laser power and pressure. Micro carbon rods with good surface quality were obtained at near the threshold condition. Micro carbon rods with aspect ratio of about 100 and micro tubular structures were fabricated to demonstrate the possible application of this method to the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. Laser Raman spectroscopic analysis of the micro carbon structures revealed that the carbon rods are consisting of amorphous carbon.

  • Materials used as fuel cell electrode should be light, high conductive, high surface area for reaction, catalytic surface and uniformity of porous structure. Nickel is widely used in electrode materials because it itself has catalytic properties. When used as electrode materials, nickel of only a few im on the surface may be sufficient to conduct the catalytic role. To manufacture the nickel with porous structure, Electroless nickel plating on carbon fiber be conducted. Because electroless nickel plating is possible to do uniform coating on the surface of substrate with complex shape. Acidic bath and alkaline bathe were used in electroless nickel plating bath, and pH and temperature of bath were controlled. The rate of electroless plating in alkaline bath was faster than that in acidic bath. As increasing pH and temperature, the rate of electrolee plating was increased. The content of phosphorous in nickel deposit was higher in acidic bath than that in alkaline bath. As a result, the uniform nickel deposit on porous carbon fiber was conducted.

  • The study of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere is critical to understand the role of aerosols in human health and climate. Using standardized thermal optical transmittance methods, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were determined using a combustion sampling system for four types of agricultural crop residues (rice straw, red pepper stems, soybean stems, and green perilla stems) and eight types of forest trees (pine stems, pine needles, ginkgo stems, ginkgo leaves, maple stems, maple leaves, cherry stems, and cherry leaves). The aerosol particles between 0.056 and $5.6{\mu}m$ in size were analyzed using a Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactor (MOUDI). In the current study, the Carbonaceous Thermal Distribution (CTD) by carbon analyzer was discussed in order to understand the carbon fractions from the twelve types of biomass burning. Also, the concentration of OC, EC, WSOC, and water insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) detected in the emissions were described.

  • The experiment established optimal conditions for over-carbonization. With the use of the electron microscopy and X-ray phase analysis the regularities of carbon deposit formation in process of methane and propane pyrolysis on the zeolites, Kazakhstan natural clays, chrome and bauxite sludge containing metal oxides of iron subgroup, have been studied. In process of over-carbonization the trivalent iron was reduced to metal form. In addition, the carbon tubes of divers morphology had been impregnated with ultra-dispersed metal particles. The kinetic parameters of carbon formation in process of methane decomposition on the zeolite - CoO mixture surface were investigated by method of thermo-gravimetric analysis. The morphology and structure of formed carbon fibrils, with the metal particles fixed at their ends, have been investigated, the formation of branched carbon fibrils pattern, so called octopus, being found. Also, the walnut shells and grape kernel carbonization, their immobilization by the cells of selective absorption of heavy metal and sulfur dioxide ions have been studied. The example of metal-carbon composites used as adsorbents for wastewater purification, C$_3$- C$_4$ hydrocarbon cracking catalysts and refractory materials with improved properties have been considered.
