In this study, degradation of carbohydrates and composition of fermentative products were investigated in semi-continuous acid fermenter varying hydraulic retention time (HRT). Rice soup was used as a sole substrate for the acid fermentation. Solubilization efficiency of the substrate was higher than 70% for all HRT, however the gas conversion was ignorable implying that most of organic contents in the influent remained in the form of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and ethanol after acid fermentation. The VFAs were the predominant product and the VFAs conversion increased as the HRT decreased. The VFAs conversion reached the maximum value at 12 hr HRT accounting for 70% of the influent COD. Similar to VFAs, ethanol conversion was increased with the decrease of HRT and the maximum ethanol conversion efficiency was 8% at the HRT of 12 hr. Composition of VFAs was markedly dependent on HRT. As HRT increased, the composition of acetic acid was increased as a product of acetogenesis from butyrate, valerate and ethanol. This study demonstrated that HRT affected acid fermentation of a carbohydrate containing organic wastes producing VFAs and ethanol which could be effectively used to compensate the lack of carbon in wastewater for biological nutrient removal.
2-Hydroxy-6-(1-(3-phenylurylphenyl)ethoxy)-benzaldehyde ($\mathbf{2}$) has been synthesized in racemic form from 1,3-Dihydroxybenzene via formylation and reaction with 3-phenyluryl-methylbenzylbromide. The optically pure form of $\mathbf{2}$ was separated by normal silica column chromatography from the imine diastreomer which was obtained by the reaction of racemic mixture of $\mathbf{2}$ with optically pure leucinol. The absolute configuration of the separated enantiomer of $\mathbf{2}$ was decided from the energy calculation of the corresponding imine diastereomers. The activity of $\mathbf{2}$ as a chirality conversion reagent (CCR) for amino acids was determined by $^1H$ NMR analysis. The efficiency of $\mathbf{2}$ is not better than the previous CCRs based on binaththol. Compound $\mathbf{2}$, however, has lower molecular weight compared to other CCRs. This work demonstrates that asymmetric carbon can control the selectivity of amino acids.

Recently, methane has attracted much attention as an alternative carbon feedstock since it is the major component of abundant shale and natural gas. In this work, we produced methanol from methane using whole cells of Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b as the biocatalyst. M. trichosporium OB3b was cultured on NMS medium with a supply of 7:3 air/methane ratio at 30℃. The optimal concentrations of various methanol dehydrogenase inhibitors such as potassium phosphate and EDTA were determined to be 100 and 0.5 mM, respectively, for an efficient production of methanol. Sodium formate (40 mM) as a reducing power source was added to enhance the conversion efficiency. A productivity of 49.0 mg/l·h, titer of 0.393 g methanol/l, and conversion of 73.8% (mol methanol/mol methane) were obtained under the optimized batch condition.
Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the effects of Cordyceps Sinensis (CS) and Cordyceps Militaris (CM) on anti oxidation in the livers of ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats. Methods : Hepatotoxicity in rats was induced by carbon tetracWoride. $CCl_4-induced$ rats were administered with the extract of CS and CM. Results : In vitro, CS and CM didn't affect levels of lipid peroxide and the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase. However, hydroxyl radicals and DPPHL radicals were decreased. In vivo, in the ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats, lipid peroxide, the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase and superoxide radicals were increased but superoxide dismutase was decreased. After CS and CM were administered to ${CCl_4}-treated$ rats, levels of lipid peroxide, the activities and type conversion ratio of xanthine oxidase and superoxide radicals were decreased but superoxide dismutase was increased. Conclusions : These results suggest that CS and CM decrease the activities of free-radical-generating enzymes which form lipid peroxide and increase the activities of oxygen free radical scavenging enzymes.
Microalgae is one of the promising biodiesel feedstock with high growth rates compared to those of terrestrial oil crops. Despite its numerous advantages, biodiesel production from microalgae needs to reduce energy demand and material costs further to go to commercialization. During solvent extraction of microalgal lipids, lipid-extracted algae (LEA) cell residue is generated as an organic solid waste, about 80-85% of original algal biomass, and requires an appropriate recycling or economic disposal. The resulting LEA still contains significant amount of carbohydrates, proteins, N, P, and other micronutrients. This review will focus on recent advancement in the utilization of LEA as: (i) utilization as nutrients or carbon sources for microalgae and other organisms, (ii) anaerobic digestion to produce biogas or co-fermentation to produce CH4 and H2, and (iii) conversion to other forms of biofuel through thermochemical degradation processes. Possible mutual benefits in the integration of microalgae cultivation-biodiesel production-resulting LEA with anaerobic digestion and thermochemical conversion are also discussed.

Land use and land cover change (LULCC) due to human activities directly affects natural systems and contributes to changes in carbon exchange and climate through a range of feedbacks. How land use and land cover changes affect carbon exchanges can be assessed using multiyear measurement data from micrometeorological flux towers. The objective of the research is to assess the impact of land use and land cover change on carbon exchange in a heterogeneous cropland area. The heterogeneous cropland area in Haenam, South Korea is also subjected to a land conversion due to rural development. Therefore, the impact of the change in land utilization in this area on carbon exchange should be assessed to monitor the cycle of energy, water, and carbon dioxide between this key agricultural ecosystem and the atmosphere. We are currently conducting the research based on 10 years flux measurement data from Haenam Koflux site and examining the LULCC patterns in the same temporal scale to evaluate whether the LULCC in the surrounding site and the resulting heterogeneity (or diversity) have a significant impact on carbon exchange. Haenam cropland is located near the southwestern coast of the Korean Peninsula with land cover types consisting of scattered rice paddies and various croplands (seasonally cultivated crops). The LULCC will be identified and quantified using remote sensing satellite data and then analyzing the relationships between LULCC and flux footprint of $CO_2$ from tower flux measurement. We plan to calculate annual flux footprint climatology map from 2003 to 2012 from the 10 years flux observation database. Eventually, these results will be used to quantify how the system's effective performance and reserve capacity contribute to moving the system towards more sustainable configuration. Broader significance of this research is to understand the co-evolution of the Haenam agricultural ecosystem and its societal counterpart which are assumed to be self-organizing hierarchical open systems.

$CO_2$ emission has been gradually increased due to rising fossil fuel use. A gliding arc plasma scrubber (GAPS) was proposed to destruct $CO_2$. For optimum design of GAPS, a CFD analysis has been conducted in different configuration for the system. The parameters considered included gas injection velocity at the nozzle and gas flow rate to gap between electrodes. The reactor configuration affected velocity fields which caused changes in the mixture fraction and the retention time. The mixing effect of $CO_2$ and supplied gas ($CH_4$ and steam) was enhanced by installing a orifice baffle. This revealed that the orifice baffle is effective in $CO_2$ conversion by positioning the reactants in the gas into the center of plasma discharge.

Poisson's ratio, one of elastic constants of elastic solids, has not attracted attention due to its narrow range and difficult measurement. Transverse wave velocity as well as longitudinal wave velocity should be measured for nondestructive measurement of Poisson's ratio. Rigid couplants for transverse wave is one of obstacle for scanning over specimen. In the present work, a novel measurement of Poisson's ratio distribution was applied. Immersion method was employed for the scanning over the specimen. Echo signals of normal beam longitudinal wave were collected, and transverse wave modes generated by mode conversion were identified. From transit time of longitudinal and transverse waves, Poisson's ratio was determined without the information of specimen thickness. Poisson's ratio distribution of the carbon steel weldment was mapped. Heat affected zone of the weldment was clearly distinguished from base and filler metals.
Coal-water mixture(CWM) fuel has attracted much attention as a substitute fuel for oil by which high economics and short-term commercialization might be realized in comparison with other coal conversion technologies. There are many factors that affect the CWM combustibility, such as the physical properties of CWM, the performance of atomizer and burner, operating conditions, capacity and load of the boiler, etc. Particularly, atomization quality is extremely critical to achieving acceptable carbon conversion efficiency of CWM fuel and maintaining the flame stability, because the coal particles in the CWM droplets burn as agglomerates. This paper presents the R&D results about the CWM atomization characteristics, including the significance of CWM atomization the R&D results about the CWM atomization characteristics, including the significance of CWM atomization quality, the atomization and combustion mechanism, the type of CWM atomizer, size and size distribution of CWM droplets and some factors that influence the atomization performance.
Entercbacter agglomerans 6L was isolated from citron (Citrus junos) peel by using an enrichment culture containing (+)-limonene. It was able to metabolize limonene and grew well ($A_{600}$:4.5) on limonene as a sole carbon source. E. agglomernas 6L was highly resistant to limonene toxicity, and grew to 1.0 optical density ($A_{600}$) even at 5% (v/v) of limonene in Luria-Bertani media. ${\gamma}-Valerolactone$ and cryptone were detected as the major metabolic products of limonene by E. agglomerans 6L.
