  • Nano-diamond (ND) was added during the carbon block preparation process to increase the thermal conductivity of the carbon block. Added ND controlled the generated pore of carbon block due to the volatilization of the binder pitch during the carbonization process. The ND was added to the kneading process of coke and binder pitch, and carbon blocks were prepared by pressing and carbonization. As the amount of added ND increased, the ND ratio of the carbon block increased. The added ND made a pass-way for generated gas by volatilizing the binder pitch during the carbonization process, increasing the density of the carbon block and reducing the porosity. The thermal conductivity of the carbon block was improved by increased density, lowered porosity, and the high thermal conductivity of added ND.

  • Landfill gas (LFG) generation characteristics in a construction waste landfill zone (block E) and mixed landfill zone (block A) were analyzed. During the period from October 2018 to April 2022, a total of 936×103 and 1,001×103 tons of waste were disposed in block E and block A, respectively. Out of this, 27.1% and 55.6% were biodegradable waste in block E and block A, respectively. The landfill masses of the two blocks were converted to be comparable. Then, the biodegradable waste and organic carbon were estimated by element analysis, biodegradable carbon by biochemical methane potential experiment (DC), and sulfate ion by acid decomposition. Results showed that biodegradable waste, organic carbon, biodegradable carbon, and sulfate ions in block A were 2.1, 1.6, 5.2, and 0.4 times greater than those in block E, respectively. The amount of LFG generated by block A was 4.8 times greater than that by block E. The average concentrations of methane (CH4) were 60.8% and 60.9% in block E and block A, respectively, which were unrelated to the nature of disposed waste. The average concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) were significantly high in block E (4,489 ppm) and block A (8,478 ppm). As the DC/SO42- of block E and block A were 0.35 and 4.56, respectively, increase in DC/SO42- caused increase in not only the total amount but also the concentration of H2S generated.

  • Concrete bricks and hollow concrete block products manufactured using ordinary portland cement react with salt and carbon dioxide absorbed from the soil and atmosphere in the use environment, causing contamination such as efflorescence. This is due to the reaction between calcium hydroxide, a cement hydration product, and carbon dioxide, producing and eluting calcium carbonate. This study was a preliminary study to compare and evaluate the reduction of efflorescence in concrete bricks and hollow concrete block products manufactured using carbon dioxide reaction hardening cement. The purpose was to evaluate the efflorescence occurrence in products using ordinary Portland cement.

  • An experimental study on the ultimate behaviors of the mild carbon steel (SPHC) fillet-welded connection is presented in this paper. Seven specimens were fabricated by the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). All specimens failed by typical block shear fracture in the base metal of welded connections not weld metal. Block shear fracture observed in the base metal of welded connection is a combination of single tensile fracture transverse to the loading direction and two shear fractures longitudinal to the loading direction. Test strengths were compared with strength predictions by the current design equations and suggested equations by previous researchers. It is known that current design specifications (AISC2010 and KBC2016) and Oosterhof & Driver's equation underestimated overly the ultimate strength of the welded connection by on average 44%, 31%, respectively and prediction by Topkaya's equation was the closest to the test results. Consequently, modified equation is required to be proposed considering the stress triaxiality effect and material property difference on the block shear strength for base metal fracture in welded connections fabricated with mild carbon steel.

  • In this study, high-density carbon blocks were manufactured using coke, binder pitch, and impregnated pitch, then the effect of pitch fluidity on the densification of carbon blocks during the impregnation process was investigated. A green block was manufactured through high-pressure figuration of coke and binder pitch, and a carbon block was obtained through a heat treatment process. An impregnation process was performed to remove pores generated by volatilization of the binder pitch during the heat treatment process. The impregnation process was carried out the high-pressure reaction step of impregnating the pitch into the carbon block followed by the pretreatment step of melting the impregnation pitch. Melting of the impregnation pitch was carried out at 140~200 ℃, and the viscosity of the impregnation pitch decreased as the heat treatment temperature increased. The decrease in the viscosity of the impregnation pitch improved the fluidity and effectively impregnated the pores inside the carbon block, reducing the porosity of the carbon block by 83% and increasing the apparent density by 5%.

  • This paper carried out the comparative analysis on ground impedance of a carbon block and a copper rod. Two types of grounding electrode were compared ; a carbon block (L : 1 m, ${\Phi}$ : 245 mm) buried at a depth of 0.8 m and a three-linked copper rod (L : 1 m, ${\Phi}$ : 10 mm) of equilateral triangles with 1 m spacing. Ground impedance depending on applied current source was evaluated by the application of a sine wave current with 60 Hz ~ 3.5 MHz, a fast-rise pulse with rising time of 200 ns, a standard lightning impulse of $8/20{\mu}s$ and a 600 Hz square wave. Ground impedance for both electrodes were almost the same value below 100 kHz, and increased rapidly afterwards. The maximum ground impedance appeared $400{\Omega}$ at around 1.5 MHz. Ground impedance of the carbon block was lower at the square wave and was higher at fast-rise pulse than that of the copper rod. Also, ground impedance as ages showed no difference for the last 8 months. From the results, it is likely that ground performance for both electrodes shows no difference against commercial frequency and lightning impulse current, while the copper rod shows better performance against a fast-rise pulse with rise-time of a few hundred ns.
