High energy ball milling is employed to produce iron matrix- multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced composite. The damage caused to MWCNT due to harsh ball milling condition and its influence on interfacial bonding is studied. Different amount of MWCNT is used to find the optimal percentage of MWCNT for avoidance of the formation of chemical reaction product at the matrix - reinforcement interface. Effect of process control agent is assessed by the use of different materials for the purpose. It is observed that ethanol as a process control agent (PCA) causes degradation of MWCNT reinforcements after milling for two hours whereas solid stearic acid used as process control agent, allows satisfactory conservation of MWCNT structure. It is further noted that at a high MWCNT content (~ 2wt.%), high energy ball milling leads to reaction of iron and carbon and forms iron carbide (cementite) at the iron-MWCNT interface. At low percentage of MWCNT, dissolution of carbon in iron takes place and the amount of reinforcement in iron matrix composite becomes negligibly small. However, under the present ball milling condition (ball to metal ratio~ 6:1 and 200 rpm vial speed) iron-1wt.% MWCNT composite of good interfacial bonding can retain the tubular structure of reinforcing MWCNT.
A carbon composite was synthesized by mechanical mixing of ball-milled graphite and PVC powders, followed by pyrolysis reaction of PVC. Natural graphite ball milled under atmosphere of argon or air leads to a disordered structure. It appears that the electrochemical lithium intercalation reaction is dependent on the atmosphere in which the graphite is ball milled. The carbon composite obtained using air-milled graphite shows a high reversible capacity and high initial coulombic efficiency compared to argon-milled graphite. This is attributed to the enhanced thermal stability of a disordered structure in the air milled sample. For the one with air-milled graphite, the disordered structure is maintained during heat treatment, while argon-milled graphite is partially crystallized.
The cryogenic ball milling was performed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at an extremely low temperature to increase the dispersion of CNTs. The effects of milling speed and time on the deagglomeration and structural changes of CNTs were studied. FESEM was used to analyze the dispersion and the change of particle size before and after milling process. Transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis was also investigated the effect of cryogenic ball milling on the morphological characteristics of CNTs. The structural changes by the cryogenic ball milling process were further confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopic analysis. The results showed that the agglomeration of CNTs was significantly reduced and amorphous structure was observed at high milling speed. However, the milling time has no great effect on the dispersion property and structural change of CNTs compared with milling speed.
The development of hollow carbon balls by $CO_2$ oxidation of two types of carbon blacks was studied. Super P (SP) and Denka Black (DB) were used for this study. Specific surface area (SSA), structural parameters, and microstructures were examined using Brunauer, Emmett and Teller apparatus, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscope (TEM), respectively. The SSAs of both oxidized carbon blacks increased after oxidation. The SSAs of raw DB and SP were 73 $m^2/g$ and 60 $m^2/g$, respectively. Maximum SSAs of oxidized DB and SP were 152 $m^2/g$ and 253 $m^2/g$, respectively. The $d_{002}$ of DB and SP showed almost no change after oxidation. The Lc of raw DB ($38{\AA}$) and SP ($19{\AA}$) increased with increasing weight loss. The $L_c$ of SP increased up to $254{\AA}$ at 96% weight loss. The SSA increased about twice in DB (148 $m^2/g$) and about four times in SP (254 $m^2/g$) after 3 h oxidation compared with the original carbon blacks. Through TEM observation the outer parts of the oxidized carbon blacks showed a rigid shell structure and the inner parts looked empty. Generally it looked like an angular soccer ball, so we named it 'hollow carbon ball'. It is expected that the hollow carbon ball can be used as catalyst supports.
Milled carbon fiber (mCF) was prepared by a ball milling process, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) diffractograms were obtained by a $2{\theta}$ continuous scanning analysis to study mCF crystallinity as a function of milling time. The raw material for the mCF was polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber (T700). As the milling time increased, the mean particle size of the mCF consistently decreased, reaching $1.826{\mu}m$ at a milling time of 18 h. The XRD analysis showed that, as the milling time increased, the fraction of the crystalline carbon decreased, while the fraction of the amorphous carbon increased. The (002) peak became asymmetric before and after milling as the left side of the peak showed an increasingly gentle slope. For analysis, the asymmetric (002) peak was deconvoluted into two peaks, less-developed crystalline carbon (LDCC) and more-developed crystalline carbon. In both peaks, Lc decreased and $d_{002}$ increased, but no significant change was observed after 6 h of milling time. In addition, the fraction of LDCC increased. As the milling continued, the mCF became more amorphous, possibly due to damage to the crystal lattices by the milling.
The sonication mettled is widely used with surfactants to suspend individual single-walled carbon nanotubes in solution, and it is well known that sonication-induced tube cutting occurs. Recently, it is found out that ultrasonicated nanotubes yield simultaneous separation by tube length and diameter. Nanotubes that have been cut shortest possess the greatest enrichments of large-diameter species. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes are cut using a ball milling method. Similar fracture behavior is observed fur the ball milled nanotubes: i.e., large diameter tubes are cut shorter. The ability to separate carbon nanotubes by diameter and length will contribute to tile development of nanotube-based applications.
Grinding characteristics for aluminium and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) powder during traditional and planetary ball milling investigated from the viewpoint of particle behaviour with the aimat developing CNT-dispersed samples ground based on powder metallurgy routes. In this work, a comparison between the pure aluminium and CNT input aluminium grinding was carried out to determine grinding time effect on size reduction. We observed that the use of the curly small-diameter multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) attributed to the beneficial role of the MWCNTs as grinding aids. It is suggested that careful choices of the sizes of CNTs and Al powders would allow fine-grinding of composite particles with uniformly distributed CNT reinforcements thereby ensuring improved properties of the final composites produced by low-temperature compacting.
Single walled carbon nanotubes were mixed with various metal powders by mechanical ball milling and sintered by spark plasma sintering processes. Two compositional (0.1 and 1 vol%) of the single walled carbon nanotubes were dispersed onto the pure aluminum, 5052 aluminum alloy, pure titanium, Ti6Al4Vanadium alloy, pure copper, and stainless steel 316L. Each composite powders were spark plasma sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ and well synthesized regardless of the matrices. Vickers hardness of the composite materials was measured and they exhibited higher values regardless of the carbon nanotubes composition than those of the pure materials. Moreover, single walled carbon nanotubes reinforced copper matrix composites showed highest enhancement between the other metal matrices system. We believe that low energy mechanical ball milling and spark plasma sintering processes are useful tool for fabricating of the carbon nanotubes-reinforced various metal matrices composite materials. The single walled carbon nanotubes-reinforced various metal matrices composite materials could be used as an engineering parts in many kind of industrial fields such as aviation, transportation and electro technologies etc. However, detail strengthening mechanism should be carefully investigated.
Recently, there is an increase in the need for precision linear stages with vacuum compatibility in such areas as lithography equipment for wafer or mask manufacturing, mask mastering equipment for optical data storage and electron beam equipment. A simple design, high stiffness and low cost can be achieved by using ball bearings. However, a ball bearing have friction and wear problems just as in ambient air. In order to decrease the friction, a special finish, a diamond-like carbon (DLC) film coating, is applied to the surface of a guide rail by sputtering deposition. This paper presents the result of an experimental investigation on the control performance of a ball bearing-guided linear motion stage under two environmental conditions: in air and vacuum. A comparison between the results with and without the DLC coating was also considered in the experimental investigation.
