The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.
Bake hardenable steel utilizes the phenomenon of strain aging to provide an increase in the yield strength of formed components. An increase of the carbon content will improve the bake hardening response: more solutes are available to pin mobile dislocations and to form the clusters more rapidly. But aging resistance decrease as increasing solute carbon. In order to under-stand the compatibility between bake hardenability and aging resistance. The optimum solute carbon control methods during manufacture should be determined. In this paper, the effect of continuous heat cycle conditions such as soaking temperature, rapid cooling start temperature, cooling rate on BH(Bake Hardenability), AI(Aging Index), YP-El(Yield Point Elongation) and other mechanical properties have been investigated. and following results were obtained. In the case of soaking temperature, BH increases with higher soaking temperature because of NbC $dissolution(830^{\circ}C)$, Therefore the solute carbon and BH at $850^{\circ}C$ and $870^{\circ}C$ are higher than these at $810^{\circ}C$. But BH at $870^{\circ}C$ is a little lower than that at $850^{\circ}C$ owing to the ferrite grain size. The measurement of amount of dissolution C using IFT(Internal Friction Test) can explain the relation of solute carbon and BH.

Since carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are discovered, tremendous attentions have been paid to these materials due to their unique mechanical, electrical and chemical properties. Thereupon, many methods to produce a large scale of CNTs have been contrived by many scientists and engineers. Thus the examination of growth mechanisms of CNTs, which is essential to produce CNTs in large scale, has been an attractive issue. Though many scientists have been strived to investigate and understand the growth mechanisms of CNTs, many of them still remain controversial or unclear. Here we introduce representative growth mechanisms of CNTs, based on broadly employed fabrication methods of CNTs. We applied Thermo-electrical Pulse Induced Evaporation (TPIE) method based on field and thermal evaporation to synthesis of CNTs. However TPIE method was originally devised to fabricate graphene sheets and $Ge_2Sb_2Te_5$ nanostructures. While performing TPIE experiments to synthesize graphene, we eventually found experimental results widely supporting the growth model of CNTs proposed already. We observed the procedure of growth of CNTs obtained by TPIE method through Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). We believe this study provides an experimental basis on understanding and investigating carbon-based nanomaterials.
In this study, a hybrid metals such as copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) coated carbon fibers (Ni-Cu/CFs) was prepared by wet laid method to develop a randomly oriented sheet material for high-efficiency electromagnetic interference shielding with the enhanced durability. The prepared sheet materials show a high electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 69.4 to 93.0 dB. In addition, the hybrid metals coated Ni-Cu/CFs sheets showed very high durability with harsh chemical/thermal environments due to the effective corrosive and mechanical resistances of Ni surface. In this context, the Ni-Cu/CF sheet possesses longer service life than the Cu/CF sheet, that is, 1.7 times longer.

Recently, the applications of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become broader than ever when it comes to such industries as automotive, ships, aerospace and military because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. Thermosetting plastics like epoxy are frequently used as the binding matrix in CFRPs due to their high hardness, wetting characteristics and low viscosity. However, they cannot melted and remolded. For this reason, thermosetting plastic wastes have caused serious environmental problems with the production of fiber reinforced plastics. Thus, many studies have focused on the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) and recycling carbon fiber. In this study, recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was prepared from CFRPs using a pyrolysis method, which was employed to separate resin and carbon fiber. The degree of decomposition for epoxy resin was confirmed from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The RCF was cut and ground to prepare a carbon fiber composite sheet (CFCS). CFCS was manufactured by applying recycled carbon fibers and various thermoplastic fibers. Various characterizations were performed, including morphological analyses of surface and cross-section, mechanical properties, and crystallization enthalpy of CFCS at different cooling conditions.
The use of materials for modern lightweight auto-bodies is becoming more complex than hitherto assemblies. The high strength materials nowadays frequently used for more specific fields such as the front and rear sub frames, seat belts and seats are mounted to the assembled body structure using bolt joints. It is desirable to use nuts attached to the assembled sheets by projection welding to decrease the number of loose parts which improves the quality. In this study, nut projection welding was carried out between a nut of both boron steel and carbon steel and ultra-high strength hot-stamped steel sheets. Then, the joints were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by microhardness measurements and pullout tests. An indigenously designed sample fixture set-up was used for the pull-out tests to induce a tensile load in the weld. The fractography analysis revealed the dominant interfacial fracture between boron steel nut weld which is related to the shrinkage cavity and small size fusion zone. A non-interfacial fracture was observed in carbon steel nut weld, the lower hardness of HAZ caused the initiation of failure and allowed the pull-out failure which have higher in tensile strengths and superior weldability. Hence, the fracture load and failure mode characteristics can be considered as an indication of the weldability of materials in nut projection welding.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are one of the nanomaterials that were discovered by Iijima in 1991 for the first time. CNTs have long cylindrical and axi-symmetric structures. CNTs are made by rolling graphene sheets. Because of their large length-to-diameter ratio, they are called nanotubes. CNTs are categorized as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) or multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) based on the shell structures. CNTs are broadly used in various fields, such as scanning probe microscopy, ultra fine nano balance and medicine, due to their extraordinary thermal conductivity, electrical and mechanical properties. Because long, straight CNTs have the same shape as asbestos, which cause cancer in cells lining the lung, there have been many studies on the effects of MWCNTs on human health that have been conducted. Stable atomization of CNTs is very important for the estimation of inhalation toxicity. In the present study, electro-static assisted axial atomizer (EAAA), which is the instrument that uses MWCNTs and aerosolizes them by transforming the single fiber shape using ultrasonic dispersion and electric field, was invented. EAAA consists of a ultrasonic bath for dispersion of MWCNTs and a particle generator for atomizing single fibers. The performance evaluation was conducted in order to assess the possibilities of 6-hour straight atomization with stability, which is the suggested exposure time in a day for the estimation of inhalation toxicity.
Compressive strength of concrete compression members strengthend with carbon fiber laminate(CFL) were studied from the test results. Test parameters are spacing, thickness, width, ply and spliced length of carbon fiber laminates. Specimens strength with sheets failed with sudden tensile rupture of the laminate, which indicate very brittle failure mode. Test result shows that closer spacing and to increas thickness of CFL is more effective. But strengthening ratio with 1-ply CFL is more effective than that of specimen with 2-ply CFL. Compressive strength capacity of specimen splied 24cm shows almost similar strength to that of non-spliced specimen. The ultimate load carrying of specimen strengthened with CFL ranges 1.11~1.86 times of that of non-strengthened specimen.
In this paper, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) particles were added between the sheets of prepreg, and the effect of on many properties of BN-embedded carbon fiber reinforced plastics was investigated. The amount of BN particles which corresponds with 0 to 15 wt% of total resin weight was used as an additive material. The tensile strength and the inter-laminar shear strength of BN-embedded CFRP samples were improved by maximally 13.6%, and 6.7%, respectively. The tendency changes of thermal, electrical conductivities and the morphology of cross-section of CFRPs were also observed. This study suggests the possibility of controlling the characteristics of carbon fiber-BN-epoxy composites to use for aerospace applications.

This paper presents the results of an experiment comparing the current circular CFT columns and circular CFT columns that were additionally confined by carbon fiber sheets (CFS) under axial loading. The main experimental parameters are the numbers of CFS layers and the diameter-to-thickness ratio. 10 specimens were prepared according to the experimental parameter plans, and axial compression tests were conducted. From the tests, the failure procedure, load-axial deformation curve, maximum axial strength, and deformation capacity of the CFT columns and confined CFT columns were compared. The test results showed that the maximum axial strengths of CFT columns additionally confined by CFS are increased higher than those of the current CFT columns, and that local buckling can be delayed due to the confinement effect of CFS.
