  • In order to develop a new rockfall protection fence using high carbon steel wire rod (HSWR) material instead of the conventional wire rope material, the author has conducted the laboratory strength tests of both materials and their connections, and carried out evaluation of absorbing rockfall energy through the vertical field rockfall tests. The vertical filed rockfall tests showed that the new rockfall protection fence with 12 rows of the HSWR could absorb more rockfall energy than 50 kJ which stands for the typical design criteria. In addition, when the quantity of HSWR was increased up to the 16 rows, the capacity of absorbing energy was greatly improved. The new rockfall protection fence was successfully applied to the highway rock-cut slope. As a result of the filed application, its constructability was similar to the conventional fence, but its total image was improved as simple and clean. The total construction cost was saved up to 20% in comparison with the conventional one.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam-column joint regions using strengthening materials (steel plate, carbon fiber sheet, and embedded carbon fiber rod) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Six specimens of retrofitted beam-column joints are constructed using various retrofitting materials and tested for their retrofit performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the beam-column joint regions (LBCJ series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity due to the effect of crack control at the time of initial loading and confinement from retrofitting materials during testing. Specimens of LBCJ series, designed by the retrofitting of FRP in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 26~50% and its energy dissipation capacity by 13.0~14.4% when compared to standard specimen of LBCJC with a displacement ductility of 4.

  • Recently, transportations using hydrogen energy is being researched for the alternative energy of fossil fuels. To use them, processes of producing, storing and transferring are required. When carrying them in liquid under 90 MPa pressure, it costs less than in a gas status. Thus, a hydrogen pump is necessary and in this research we predicted the flow in the chamber using finite element methods (FEM) program ANSYS. As a result, when the valve was opened by 3 mm, between the 1st chamber and the 2nd chamber, the maximum velocity was decreased to 8.111 m/s by 10.6% (without valve, 9.075 m/s). In addition, pressure was also increased to 0.63 MPa by 1.6% (without valve, 0.62 MPa). When using these results, more efficient processes would be possible in designing them in detail.

  • In this study, experimental research was carried out to improve earthquake-resistant performance for the retrofitting of reinforced concrete beam-column joints using carbon fiber materials in existing reinforced concrete building. Six reinforced concrete beam-column joints were constructed and tested to evaluate the retrofitting effect of test variables, such as the retrofitting materials and retrofitting region(plastic hinge, beam-column joint) under load reversals. Test results show that retrofitting specimen(RPC-CP2, RPC-CR, RJC-CP, RJC-CR), using new materials(carbon fiber plate, carbon fiber rod and carbon fiber sheet), designed by the improvement of earthquake-resistant performance and ductility, attained more load-carrying capacity and stable hysteretic behavior.

  • Carbon-based materials have been known as ablative material and have been used for thermal protection systems. Ablation is an erosive phenomenon that results in thermochemical and thermomechanical changes on materials. Ablation resistance is one of the key properties that determines performance and life-time of the thermal protection material under ablative conditions. In this study, ablation properties of graphite, 3-dimensional (C/C) composites (needle-punched type and rod type) were investigated byusing a plasma wind tunnel which produce a supersonic plasma flow from a segmented arc heater with the power level of 0.4 MW. The mass losses and surface roughness changes which contain main result of the ablation are measured. A morphological analysis ofthe carbon-based materials, before and after the ablation test, are performed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and non-contact 3D surface measuring system. Electronic balance and a portable surface roughness tester were used for evaluation of the recession and mass loss of the test samples.

  • It is very difficult to find not only optimized welding condition but also fatigue characteristics of the dissimilar weld. In this study. Low carbon steel (SS41) and austenitic stainless steel (STS304) were welded by GTAW welding with STS309 stainless wire rod and Single Edge Notch specimens were used for the examination of fatigue behavior on welding heat cycle. The fatigue crack growth rate in HAZ of SS41 was the highest. The second was in STS304 bond line and the lowest was in HAS of STS304.

  • We have studied internal quality including chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonmetallic inclusion of test materials. We have analyzed tensile strength value, hardness value, impact value etc. In analyzing internal quality, all of the test materials showed typical ferrite+pearlite structure. But nonmetallic inclusion showed oxide and sulfide inclusions in medium carbon steels, and sulfide inclusion is S-free cutting steels. In ca+ S-free cutting steels, the calcium aluminate and sulfide complex inclusion had low-melting points as deformation of sulfide and oxide inclusion is existed. It was found that tensile strength and hardness give maximum value in medium carbon steels, where as minimum in Ca + -free cutting steels. But values of elongation, reduction of area impact are reverse. Fracture surface of impact specimen is ductile in free cutting steels but brittle in medium cabon steels.

  • Organic solvent tolerant bacterium, designated as strain BCNU 106 is a gram negative, rod-shaped aerobe and grows on benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) as a sole carbon source. According to 16S rDNA analysis and fatty acid analysis, strain BCNU 106 showed highest similarity to Pseudomonas syringae var. savastanoi (Pseudomonas savastanoi). Strain BCNU 106 was able to utilize toluene, ethylbenzene, both o-, m-, p-xylene , m-cresol and o-cresol. The degradation of o-, m-, p-xylene by strain BCNU 106 is particularly important, since o-xylene is a compound of considerable environmental interest, owing to its recalcitrance; and very few microorganism have been reported to utilize both o-, m-, p-xylene as a sole carbon source.

  • An experimental work is presented to evaluate the retrofit method for improving the flexural capacity of shear walls. Fives shear wall specimens are designed and retrofitted by using carbon fiber materials such as rod, sheet and plate. Cyclic horizontal loads are applied to the specimens under constant axial load, $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Test result shows that specimens with additional flexural reinforcement have the increased initial stiffness and deformation capacity. However, the strength is not improved as much as expected. This is because that the flexural reinforcement is pulled out from the foundation at the latter half of cycles. In order to maximize the flexural retrofit, therefore, it is required to study the anchorage behavior of the flexural reinforcement for retrofit.
