  • In this study, the effect of phosphoric acid (PA) as a fiber spinning aid on the strength increase of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nano-fibers by using modified mechano-electrospinning technologies has been analyzed. The medium carbonization temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ has been selected for the future economic production of these new materials. The concentration of PAN in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was fixed as 5 wt%. The weight fraction of PA was selected as being 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% in comparison to PAN. These solutions have been used to make the nanofibers. The mechano-electrospinning apparatus installed in KRICT was made by our own design. By using this apparatus the continous and highly aligned precursor nano-fibers have been obtained. The bundle of 50 well aligned nano diameter continuous fibers with the diametr of 10 microns with 6 wt% phosphoric acid for addition showed maximum mechanical properties of 1.6 GPa as tensile strength and 300 GPa as Young's modulus. The weight of final product can be increased 19%, which can improve the economical benefits for the application of these new materials.

  • Thin films of carbon-nano materials (CNMs) of different morphology have been successfully deposited on ceramic substrate by CVD at temperatures $800^{\circ}C$, $850^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ using plant based oils in the presence of transition metal catalysts (Ni, Co and Ni/Co alloys). Based on the return and insertion loss, microwave absorption properties of thin film of nanocarbon material are measured using passive micro-Strip line components. The result indicates that amongst CNMs synthesized from oil of natural precursors (mustered oil - Brassica napus, Karanja oil - Pongamia glabra, Cotton oil - Gossipium hirsuta and Neem oil - Azadirachta indica) carbon nano fibers obtained from neem's seed oil showed better microwave absorption (~20dB) in the range of 8.0 GHz to 17.90 GHz.

  • In this work, the effects of maleic anhydride (MA) content on mechanical properties of chopped carbon fibers (CFs)-reinforced MA-grafted-polypropylene (MAPP) matrix composites. A direct oxyfluorination on CF surfaces was applied to increase the interfacial strength between the CFs and MAPP matrix. The mechanical properties of the CFs/MAPP composites are likely to be different in terms of MA content. Surface characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and single fiber contact angle method. The mechanical properties of the composites were also measured by a critical stress intensity factor (KIC). From the KIC test results, the KIC values were increased to a maximum value of 3.4 MPa with the 0.1 % of MA in the PP, and then decreased with higher MA content.

  • Because of acute or chronic intoxication by carbon disulfide, viscose rayon industry is strictly subjected to environment regulatory approval. Recently, non-wood fibers are frequently considered as a raw materials for the manufacture of specialty paper for the higher physical strength and functionality. Among the non-wood fibers, hemp bast fiber is one of the most widely used materials in viscose rayon yarn industries. In this study, the handsheet for manufacturing the viscose rayon yarn was prepared with wood pulp fibers and hemp bast fibers. The proper mixing ratio of wood fibers and hemp bast fibers with dry-strength agent and nano-celluloses was analysed in terms of physical and mechanical strength of sheet for viscose rayon yarn. The papermaking conditions for high mechanical strength of sheet were obtained by mixing the SwBKP and HwBKP fibers with freeness level of 200 mL CSF. The dual polymer system by controlling the addition ratio of PVAm and anionic PAM was also important. The addition of nano-cellulose into wet-end furnishes increased the physical strength of sheet, and improved the paper structure for the production of viscose rayon yarn.

  • In this study, the process of preparation nonwoven with coated carbon nano fibers (CNFs) /poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) composite solution is described. The various contents of CNFs/PVDF-HFP composite coated nonwoven were prepared and characterized by morphological, mechanical, and electrical methods. Nonwovens are coated with CNFs/PVDF-HFP composite solution and decreased the pick up ratio with increasing CNFs contents in range from 0% to 16%. In the results of SEM images, it was clear that the CNFs were evenly distributed in coated nonwoven by SEM images, the existence of CNFs in coated nonwoven was confirmed regularly. The mechanical properties of various contents of CNFs/PVDF-HFP coated nonwoven were examined. The tensile linearity and compression linearity increased with increasing CNFs contents. The electrical properties of the CNFs/PVDF-HFP coated nonwoven increased with increasing CNFs contents.

  • In this work, the electroplating of copper was introduced on PAN-based carbon fibers for the enhancement of mechanical interfacial strength of carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle measurements. Its mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were studied by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results, it was found that the mechanical interfacial properties of Cu-plated carbon fibers-reinforced composites (Cu-CFRPs) enhanced with increasing the Cu plating time, Cu content and COOH group up to Cu-CFRP-30. However, the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs decreased dramatically in the excessively Cu-plated CFRPs sample. In conclusion, the presence of Cu particles on carbon fiber surfaces can be a key factor to determine the mechanical interfacial properties of the Cu-CFRPs, but the excessive Cu content can lead the failure due to the interfacial separation between fibers and matrices in this system.

  • To develop flexible electrode materials for wearable devices, we investigated the electrochemical characteristics of carbon fibers tow according to pretreatment. And an electrochemical non-enzymatic sensor was fabricated using glucose as a target. The carbon fibers tow was pretreated through desizing and activation processes, and activation was performed in two ways: chemical oxidation and electrochemical oxidation. Surface morphology of carbon fibers tow samples was observed by SEM and their electrochemical characteristics and sensing performance were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and chronoamperometry. Carbon fibers tow samples showed improved electrochemical properties such as reduced Ret, ΔEp, and increased Ip through pretreatment. And similar electrochemical properties were obtained with both activation methods. We selected electrochemically activated carbon fibers tow as the final electrode material for application of electrochemical sensor. The non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on this electrode has an enhanced sensitivity of 0.744 A/mM (in a linear range of 0.09899~3.75423 mM) and 0.330 mA/mM (3.75423~50 mM), respectively. Through this study, the possibility of using carbon fibers tow was confirmed as an electrode material. It is expected to be used as basic research for development of high-performance flexible electrode materials.

  • In this paper, the electrical and resistance heating properties of carbon fiber heating elements with different electroless Ni-P plating times for car seat were studied. The specific resistance and specific heat of the carbon fibers were determined using 4-point probe method and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), respectively. The surface morphology and temperature of carbon fibers were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermo-graphic camera, respectively. From experimental results, the nickel layer thickness and surface temperature of carbon fibers increased with increasing the plating time. However, the specific heat and specific resistance decreased with respect to the increased plating time. In conclusion, the electroless Ni-P plating could improve the resistance heating and electrical properties of carbon fiber heating elements for car seat.
