  • A correlation between fatigue damage and acousto-ultrasonic (AU) parameters has been obtained from signals acquired during fatigue loading of the single-lap joints of a carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates and A16061 plate. The correlation showed an analogy to those representing the stiffness reduction $(E/E_0)$ of polymer matrix composites by the accumulation of fatigue damage. This has been attributed to the transmission characteristics of acoustic wave energy through bonded joints with delamination-type defects and their influence on the change of spectral content of AU signals. Another correlation between fatigue cycles and the spectral magnitude of acoustic emission (AE) signals has also been found during the final stage of fatigue loading. Both AU and AE can be applied almost in real-time to monitor the evolution of damage during fatigue loading.

  • A novel silicon-containing arylacetylene resin (MSAR) modified by dipropargyl ether of bisphenol A (DPBPA) and dipropargyl ether of perfluorobisphenol A (DPPFBPA) was prepared separately. The curing behaviors of modified resins, DPBPA/MSAR and DPPFBPA/MSAR, were characterized with differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The kinetic parameters of modified resins were obtained by the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The results of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) revealed that the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the cured DPBPA/MSAR reached $486^{\circ}C$. According to the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the decomposition temperature ($T_{d5}$) of the cured resins and char yield ($Y_c$, $800^{\circ}C$) decreased as the dipropargyl ether loadings increased, especially in air. With the same weight loading, thermal stability of DPBPA/MSAR was better than that of DPPFBPA/MSAR. The carbon fiber (T300) reinforced composites exhibited excellent flexural properties at room temperature with a high property retention at $300^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, void behavior of composite laminate by local internal pressure gradient due to structural geometry and surface film application condition was experimentally evaluated through fabrication of spar/skin integrated structure specimens. Viscosity comparison and thermal analysis for both carbon fiber prepreg and surface film were conducted and cure characteristic and rate difference were analyzed. 2 types of spar/skin integrated structural specimens were prepared based on different application condition of surface film. Subsequently, those specimens were evaluated through visual surface inspection, non-destructive and destructive inspection. In a specimen #1 with full application of surface film, low pressurized area of composite laminate created by pressure gradient of structural geometry had voids. It exhibited that voids could not be evacuated and were locked in cured laminate by the influence of pre-cured surface film with relatively faster cure rate. In a specimen #2 without surface film, it revealed that all internal voids disappeared in the cured laminate. Therefore, it is verified that surface film acts as barrier film preventing void movement and evacuation during autoclave cure.

  • The cure kinetics of carbon fiber-reinforced prepreg for Vacuum Bag Only(VBO) process was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The total heat of reaction (ΔHtotal = 537.1 J/g) was defined by the dynamic scanning test using prepregs and isothermal scanning tests were performed at 130℃~180℃. The test results of isothermal scanning were observed that the heat of reaction was increased as the temperature elevated. The Kratz model was applied to analyze the cure kinetics of resin based on the test results. To verify the simulation model, the degree of cure from panels using different cure cycles were compared with the measurement. The simulation model showed that the error against the experimental value was less than 3.4%.

  • Upgrading or strengthening of existing reinforced concrete (RC) infrastructure is an emerging demand nowadays. Near Surface Mounted (NSM) technique is very promising approach for flexural strengthening of RC members. However, premature failure such as concrete cover separation failure have been a main concern in utilizing this technique. In this study, U-wrap end anchorage with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) fabrics is proposed to eliminate the concrete cover separation failure. Experimental programs were conducted to the consequence of U-wrap end anchorage on the flexurally strengthened RC beams with NSM-steel. A total of eight RC rectangular beam specimens were tested. One specimen was kept unstrengthened as a reference; three specimens were strengthened with NSM-steel bars and the remaining four specimens were strengthened with NSM-steel bars and U-wrap end anchorage using CFRP fabrics. A 3D non-linear finite element model (FEM) was developed to simulate the flexural response of the tested specimens. It is revealed that NSM-steel (with and without end-anchors) significantly improved the flexural strength; moreover decreased deflection and strains compared with reference specimen. Furthermore, NSM-steel with end anchorage strengthened specimens revealed the greater flexural strength and improve failure modes (premature to flexure) compared with the NSM-steel without end anchorage specimens. The results also ensured that the U-wrap end anchorage completely eliminate the concrete cover separation failure.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

  • In this study, the strength safety of a composite fuel tank which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of Al6061-T6 materials and composite layers of carbon/epoxy-glass/epoxy composites has been analyzed by using a finite element analysis technique. In order to enhance the durability of the composite fuel tank, an autofrettage process was used and compressed natural gas was supplied to the prestressed fuel tank. The FEM computed results on the stress safety of autofrettaged gas tanks were compared with a criterion of design safety of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. The FEM computed results indicated that the stress safety of autofrettaged fuels tanks shows instability at the dome zone and uniform stability at the parallel body, which provide an evaluation data for a strength safety of autofrettaged composite fuel tanks. The computed results show that the stress safety of 9.2 liter composite fuel tanks satisfied the safety criteria of four evaluation items, which are provided by US DOT-CFFC and KS and indicated a safe design.

  • If what the mechanical properties according to a layer have was found out by analyzing the already fabricated composite, it could be possible to develop the composite of the better performance than the existing products. In this study, we tried to calculate the mechanical properties of the inner prepreg lamina by applying the reverse design technique to the composite structure made by laminating prepregs. When the physical quantities obtained by the simple tensile test are used alone and the physical quantities obtained by the tensile test and the mode analysis are used at the same time, the results of this study show that the accuracy of the latter is higher Finally, the maximum error of $E_1$ predicted was 0.09% and the maximum error of predicted $E_2$ was 7%.

  • In this study, unidirectional and plain woven carbon fiber reinforced magnesium matrix composite laminates were fabricated by the liquid pressing infiltration process, and evolutions of the microstructure and compressive strength of the composite laminates under corrosion were investigated by static immersion tests. In the case of the unidirectional composite laminate, the main microstructural damage during immersion appeared as a form of corrosion induced cracks, which were formed at both CF/Mg interfaces and the interfaces between layers. On the otherhand, wrap/fill interface cracks were mainly formed in the plain woven composite laminate, without any cracks at the CF/Mg interface. The formation of these cracks was considered to be associated with internal thermal residual stress, which was generated during cooling after the fabrication process of these materials. As a consequence of the corrosion induced cracks, the thickness of both laminates increased in directions vertical to the fibers with increasing immersion time. With increasing immersion time, the compressive strengths of both composite laminates also decreased continuously. It was found that the plain woven composite laminates have superior corrosion resistance and stability under a corrosive condition than unidirectional laminates.

  • Currently, fluid transfer steel pipes take a lot of time and expense to maintain all facilities due to new construction and painting or corrosion and aging. Therefore, this study was conducted for designing a CFRP pipe structure with high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance as a substitute for steel pipes. The helical/hoop pattern was cross-laminated to improve durability, and HNT was added to suppress the moisture absorption phenomenon of the epoxy. The HNT/CFRP pipe was manufactured by a filament winding process, and performed a mechanical property test, and a moisture absorption test in distilled water at 70℃. As a result, the highest bending strength was obtained when the hoop pattern was laminated with a thickness equivalent to 0.6% of the pipe. The 0.5 wt% HNT specimen had the highest moisture absorption resistance. Also, the delamination phenomenon at the interlayer interface was delayed, resulting in the lowest strength reduction rate.
