  • This research was conducted to estimate the characteristics of carbon dioxide decomposition using an inorganic sludge. The inorganic sludge was composed of high amount (66.8%) of $Fe_2O_3$. Hydrogen could be reduced with 0.247, 0.433, 0.644, and 0.749 at 350, 400, 450, and $500^{\circ}C$, respectively. The carbon dioxide decomposition rates at 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, and $500^{\circ}C$ were 32, 52, 35, 62, 75, and 84%, respectively. High temperature led to high reduction of hydrogen and better decomposition of carbon dioxide. The specific surface area of the sludge after hydrogen reduction was higher than that after carbon dioxide decomposition. The specific surface area of the sludge was more decreased with increasing of temperature.

  • This study presents a surveying of methane and carbon dioxide at sanitary landfills. The following results are obtained. (1) The majority of methane and the half of carbon dioxide pour out from vertical gas vents. (2) The quantity of carbon dioxide in cove. soil was greater than methane. (3) Even though gas extrusion in side slop area was small, the quantity of gas extrusion in side slop area was much greater than in coversoil area as especially carbon dioxide rate. (4) As were carried raw refuse layer, methane extrusion was trace, but carbon dioxide was large. (5) Gas extrusion quantity were changed by the compaction of soil, and the operating area of refuse. (6) Carbon dioxide portioned much larger in the whole landfill, but methane portioned much larger in gas vent and coversoil.

  • The main mode of heat transfer of combustion gases at high temperature is thermal radiation of the participating gases, which are mainly carbon dioxide and water vapor. Therefore, the information of the emissivities of carbon dioxide and water vapor would be very important in the thermal performance analysis of a furnace. In this study, an exponential model for the emissivities of carbon dioxide and water vapor is derived as a function of the product of the partial pressure and characteristic length and a polynomial of reciprocal of temperature. Error analysis of the calculated values from the present model is performed for the temperature ranges of 555.6∼2777.8K and the partial-pressure-length product ranges of 0.09144∼609.6 cm-atm. For carbon dioxide, the difference between the values from the present model and the Hottels chart is less than 2.5% using a polynomial in 1/T of degree of 4. For water vapor, the model can predict the emissivity within 2.5% difference using a polynomial in 1/T of degree of 3.

  • For the environment protection, carbon dioxide as a natural refrigerant has been studied to use in an automotive air conditioning system. Hence, a numerical model has been developed to describe the evaporation phenomena of carbon dioxide flowing through very small diameter tubes. The two dimensional low-Reynolds $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was used to predict the flow phenomena of carbon dioxide in the two phase during its evaporation. Furthermore, the results obtained from the model were compared with the experiments for the validation. The heat transfer coefficient is lower, as the tube inner diameter becomes smaller. However, the amount of heat absorbed by a unit mass of carbon dioxide is greater due to more surface area. Therefore, the small diameter tube has advantage in terms of compact design of evaporator. When the inlet condition of pressure and temperature is low, the heat transfer coefficient is slightly high at the same size of tube because of the thermal properties of carbon dioxide.

  • Evaluation of the durability and stability of materials used in power plants is of great importance because parts or components for turbines, heat exchangers and compressors are often exposed to extreme environments such as high temperature and pressure. In this work, high-temperature corrosion behavior of 316 L stainless steel in a carbon dioxide environment was studied to examine the applicability of a material for a supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle as the next generation power plant system. The specimens were exposed in a high-purity carbon dioxide environment at temperatures ranging from 500 to $800^{\circ}C$ during 1000 hours. The features of the corroded products were examined by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, and the chemical compound was determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that while the 316 L stainless steel had good corrosion resistance in the range of $500-700^{\circ}C$ in the carbon dioxide environment, the corrosion resistance at $800^{\circ}C$ was very poor due to chipping the corroded products off, which resulted in a considerable loss in weight.

  • The electrolyte was brought into contact with air and potassium carbonate concentration was measured with various contact time in order to check the effect of carbon dioxide in the air on zinc-air cell. The relationship between potassium carbonate concentration in electrolyte and battery capacity was also studied. The potassium carbonate concentration increased due to carbon dioxide absorption with increasing contact time with air, but the cell capacity linearly decreased with increasing potassium carbonate concentration in the electrolyte. The rate of carbon dioxide absorption was mainly affected by the pore size of hydrophobic membrane. Our study showed that adapting the pore of hydrophobic membrane decreased the loss of cell discharge performance due to the presence of carbon dioxide or water vapor in the atmosphere.

  • Geological storage of carbon dioxide has been studying in advanced countries to reduce greenhouse gases and a pilot site for geological storage is also in operation in the deep saline aquifer. Seismic wave and electrical resistivity tomography methods are applicable to monitoring techniques and they are used to evaluate the distribution range and behavior of the carbon dioxide injected in the porous sandstone formations. This paper describes the construction of an experimental apparatus which consists of a high pressure vessel and a measurement system for geological storage of carbon dioxide. The experiment apparatus will be used to measure seismic velocities and resistivities during the injection of carbon dioxide at the supercritical phase in the porous sandstones.

  • The adsorption equilibrium data for the binary gas mixture system from the pure gas adsorption data of carbon dioxide and ethylene on ZSM-5 prepared were predicted. The binary gas mixture adsorption data have been examined against predicted values by two models-the vacancy solution model(VSM) and the statistical thermodynamic model(STM), using parameters obtained from the single component isotherm. The binary gas mixture data for the carbon dioxide-ethylene system were obtained for cation exchanged forms of ZSM-5 for the gas phase carbon dioxide mole fraction of 0.752 at $37^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The experimental adsorption phase diagrams were obtained for carbon dioxide-ethylene on sodium form ZSM-5 synthesized. The single component adsorption isotherms for carbon dioxide and ethylene were also obtained for this zeolite. The single component data were used to obtain parameters derived in two models. These parameters were, in turn, used to predict the binary mixture isotherms for this zeolite. Both the vacancy solution and the statistical thermodynamic models give satisfactory predictions of adsorption phase diagrams for the binary gas mixtures of carbon dioxide and ethylene on sodium exchanged ZSM-5. Also the correlation between the experimental data and the predicted values is generally in good agreement. The system appears to show ideal behavior with a relatively constant separation factor. The slight increase in adsorption capacity with an increase in ionic radius is due, in part, to the higher polarizability associated with larger cations.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present an efficient emission reduction ratio of plastic to reduce carbon dioxide, the main cause of greenhouse gases. Research design, data and methodology: This study calculated the absolute value of carbon dioxide by setting an equation through the emission coefficient using the US EPA's WARM model. Results: In the recycling ratio of 70%, it was found that the energy recovery ratio was 15.6%, which was the energy recovery ratio without generating carbon dioxide. When carbon dioxide is generated by changing plastic waste emissions, optimal efficiency is achieved by reducing emissions by 10% to 30% of energy recovery ratio, 20% to 50% of energy recovery ratio, and 30% to 80% or more of energy recovery ratio. Conclusions: The recycling rate should be set at a minimum of 70%, so that a carbon dioxide-free energy recovery rate could be obtained during the recycling process, supporting an eco-friendly basis for environmental policies aimed at this rate. In addition, it was possible to suggest that it is essential to reduce emissions by at least 30% for eco-friendly recycling measures that can achieve both economic and environmental feasibility in the energy recovery process through incineration during recycling in Korea.

  • Global warming caused by greenhouse gases is threatening our ecosystem. Moreover, our food system is in severe danger. Recently the local food system is emerging as an alternative food network, decreasing food miles and carbon dioxide emissions, protecting the safety of our foods, and helping local economy. However, carbon labelling for agricultural products has not been introduced yet in Korea. Accordingly, research on food miles and carbon labelling for agricultural products should be urgently conducted. The study compared the food miles and the carbon dioxide emission of major agricultural products. In addition, the food mileages of garlic and carrot are compared between Korea and China. The results show that radish has the highest carbon dioxide emission, and followed by onion and cabbage. These products are produced from Jeju island and have a high Shipment volume. Although Chinese Garlic and radish have lower shipping volume and food miles than Koreans, they have higher carbon dioxide emissions due to ship transportation. Based on these results some valuable implications can be identified. Current food distribution system, which heavily focuses on the Metropolitan area, should be changed into a local system, in which foods are consumed in the local area first then transported to other area.
