  • In this study, two series of CNT/$TiO_2$ electrodes were prepared. The decrease of surface area compared with that of the pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs) indicated the blocking of micropores on the surface of the CNTs; was further supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and field emission SEM (FE-SEM) observations. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites contained a mix of anatase and rutile forms of $TiO_2$ particles when the precursor was $TiO_2$ powder, whereas when the precursor was Ti ($OC_4H_7$) (TNB), the composites contained only the typical single and clear anatase $TiO_2$ particles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectra showed the presence of C, O and Ti peaks for all samples. It was found that catalytic decomposition of methylene blue (MB) solution could be attributed to synthetic effects between the $TiO_2$ photocatalysis and electro-assisted CNTs network, and that photoelectrocatalytic oxidation increased with an increase of CNT composition. It was also found that the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation efficiency for MB is higher than that of photocatalytic oxidation. Moreover, the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites catalyst prepared by the impregnation method demonstrates higher photoelectrocatalytic activity than the mechanical mixture with the same CNT content.

  • The composite photocatalysts of a Fe-modified carbon nanotube (CNT)-$TiO_2$ were synthesized by a two-step sol-gel method at high temperature. Its chemical composition and surface properties were investigated by BET surface area, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The results showed that the BET surface area was improved by modification of Fe, which was related to the adsorption capacity for each composite. Interesting thin layer aggregates of nanosized $TiO_2$ were observed from TEM images, probably stabilized by the presence of CNT, and the surface and structural characterization of the samples was carried out. The XRD results showed that the Fe/CNT-$TiO_2$ composites contained a mix of anatase and rutile forms of $TiO_2$ particles when the precursor is $TiOSO_4{\cdot}xH_2O$ (TOS). An excellent photocatalytic activity of Fe/CNT-$TiO_2$ was obtained for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. It was considered that Fe cation could be doped into the matrix of $TiO_2$, which could hinder the recombination rate of the excited electrons/holes. The photocatalytic activity of the composites was also found to depend on the presence of CNT. The synergistic effects among the Fe, CNT and $TiO_2$ components were responsible for improving the visible light photocatalytic activity.

  • A CNT-$TiO_2$ nano composite was prepared from titanium chloride ($TiCl_4$) via sol-gel process using multi walled carbon nano tube (MWCNT) followed by calcination at $450^{\circ}C$. Spectral analysis revealed that the formed $TiO_2$ resided on the carbon in anatase form. The effect of adsorption was investigated using aqueous solution of methylene blue and procion blue dye. The photochemical reaction of CNT-$TiO_2$ composite in aqueous suspensions was studied under UV illumination in batch process. The reaction was investigated by monitoring the discoloration of the dyes employing UV-Visible spectro-photometeric technique as a function of irradiation time. The catalyst composites were found to be efficient for the photodegradation of the dye.

  • Cobalt-loaded activated carbon fibers (ACFs) supported titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) photocatalyst was developed by sol-gel method. The Co-ACFs/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X.ray diffraction patterns (XRD), energy dispersive X.ray analysis (EDX) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. Decomposition efficiency of methylene blue (MB) solution by Co-ACFs/$TiO_2$ photocatalyst reached almost 100% under 300 min reaction. The MB molecules in the bulk solutions were supposed to be condensed around $TiO_2$ particles by adsorption of ACFs. Therefore, the photocatalyst possesses the combined effect of adsorption by activated carbon fibers and photocatalytic reactivity of $TiO_2$ on MB degradation. Due to the cobalt has electron transition effece, thus improved the photodegradation of MB solution.

  • Dense composites of titanium matrix and Al2O3 matrix with reinforcements of carbon or titanium carbide fibers were successfully fabricated by high-pressure self-combustion sintering method or combustion reacton under 30 MPa of uniaxial pressure with an aid of external heating in vaccum. It was found that the fibers were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and aligned in a phase perpendicular to the pressure axis. As a moel ratio of Ti/C or reaction time increased, the density of Ti-matrix composite increased Micro pores around fibers could be removed by using clean carbon fibers without sizing agent on their surface. The evolution of carbide fibers from carbon fibers was observed. The composition of the various phases around fibers were analyzed.

  • $CNT/TiO_2$ composites were prepared by using multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and various titanium alkoxide precursors. The composites were comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoactivity of the prepared materials under UV irradiation, was tested using the conversion of MB from model aqueous solution. Finally, according to the results of methylene blue (MB) removal experiment, we could see that sample CTOS have better MB removal effect than samples CTIP and CTPP.

  • The formation of titanium diboride ($TiB_2$ ) via the reduction of $TiO_2$ with boric oxide and carbon was studied in a partially reducing atmosphere of argon mixed with 4 vol.%H2. The effect of reaction time, temperature, partial pressure of nitrogen and $TiO_2/B_2_O3$ stoichiometric ratio on the reducibility of oxides has been studied. The phases formed were analysed by using X-ray rowder diffraction and scanning sosctron microscopic techniques. In this paper, we also investigated the presence of $CaC_2$ as a reducing agent on the reducibility of oxide mixtures and on the Ti-B-C-Ca-O phase equilibria. The morphology of $TiB_2$ formed in the presence of $CaC_2$ is compared with the microstructure of $TiB_2$ formed as a consequence of carbothermic reduction. The observed variation in $TiB_2$ crystals formed is also explained.

  • In this study, we have prepared three kinds of carbon nanometer tube $CNT/TiO_{2}$ electrodes through impregnation with different concentration titanium n-butoxide (TNB) solution. The prepared electrodes were characterized with surface properties, structural crystallinity, elemental identification and photoelectrocatalytic activity. The $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine CNT. This indicated the blocking of micropores on the surface of CNT, which was further supported by observation via SEM. XRD results showed patterns for the composites and a typical single and clear anatase crystal structure. The main elements such as C, O and Ti were existed for all samples from the EDX data. The catalytic efficiency of the developed electrode was evaluated by the photoelectrodegradation of methylene blue (MB). The positive potential applied in photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation was studied. It was found that photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) decomposition of MB solution could be attributed to combination effects between $TiO_2$ photocatalytic and CNT electro-assisted. Through the comparison between photocatalytic (PC) oxidation and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation, it was found that the PEC oxidation efficiency for MB is higher than that of PC oxidation.

  • Activity carbon (AC), Cu and $Cu_2O$ modified $TiO_2$ composites (Cu/$Cu_2O$-AC/$TiO_2$) were prepared using a sol-gel method. The characteristics of the composites were evaluated using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. A methyl orange (MO) solution under visible light irradiation was used to determine the photocatalytic activity. The degradation of MO was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. $Cu_2O$, Cu and the cooperative effect of the AC increased the photo-absorption effect, thus increasing in photocatalytic activity.

  • Granular bamboo-derived active carbons (AC) were impregnated (or coated) with $TiO_2$ nano crystalline powders. The photocatalytic activity of the $TiO_2$-impregnated active carbons ($TiO_2$/AC) were determined on the basis of the degradation rate of methylene-blue aqueous solution under UV irradiation. The active compounds of $TiO_2$ were impregnated onto the AC under moderate hydrothermal conditions (${\leq}200^{\circ}C$, pH 11). The mean size of $TiO_2$ particles calculated from BET surface area were found to be as 50 nm. The $TiO_2$ precipitates were coated on the cavities or pores on the surfaces of highly activated carbons. Since the hydrothermal process led to a lowering of the on-set temperature of the anatase-to-rutile transition of $TiO_2$ as low as $200^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$ crystallites of a pure anatase or a mixed form with rutile were successfully coated on the AC depending on the synthesis temperatures.
