  • It is difficult to find a practical solution for the backward-motion control of a car-like mobile robot with n passive trailers. Unlike an omni-directional robot, a car-like mobile robot has nonholonomic constraints and limitations of the steering angle. For these reasons, the backward motion control problem of a car-like mobile robot with $n$ passive trailers is not trivial. In spite of difficulties, backing up a trailer system is useful for parking control. In this study, we proposed a mechanical alteration which is connecting $n$ passive trailers to the front bumper of a car to improve the backward motion control performance. Theoretical verification and simulations show that the backward-motion control of a general car with n passive trailers can be successfully carried out by using the proposed approach.

  • Recently, automatic parking assist systems are commercially available in some cars. In order to improve the reliability and the accuracy of parking control, pose uncertainty of a vehicle and some experimental issues should be solved. In this paper, following three schemes are proposed. (1) Odometry calibration scheme for the Car-Like Mobile Robot.(CLMR) (2) Accurate localization using Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) based redundant odometry fusion. (3) Trajectory tracking controller to compensate the tracking error of the CLMR. The proposed schemes are experimentally verified using a miniature Car-Like Mobile Robot. This paper shows that odometry accuracy and trajectory tracking performance can be dramatically improved by using the proposed schemes.

  • This paper deals with kinematic modeling of a car-like planar mobile robot consisting of four conventional fixed wheels attached on two parallel axles. The kinematic model of such a mobile robot requires the description of skidding and sliding frictional motion. Previous kinematic model proposed by Muir and Newman$^{[1]}$ does not include such frictional motions. Thus, does it result in least square solution in estimating a sensed forward velocity solution. A modified kinematic model is proposed by incorporating transnational friction motion into the original algorithm. It is shown that transnational friction motions should be included into kinematic model of the mobile robot to represent its real physical motion.

  • We proposed the KPP (Korea university Path Planner) in our previous works. The KPP is the path planning scheme of a car-like mobile robot in parking environment. The objective of this paper is to investigate the advantage of the KPP through the quantitative and qualitative analysis compared with conventional RRT. For comparison, we proposed travel time for performance index. This paper shows that the KPP shows outstanding performances from the viewpoint of travel time and computational efficiency compared with RRT.

  • This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.

  • Dubins showed that any shortest path of a car-like robot consists of exactly three path segment which are either arcs of circles of radius r(denoted C), or straight line segments(denoted S). Possible six types classified into two families, i.e. CSC and CCC. CSC includes 2 types(LRL and RLR) and CSC includes 4 types(LSL, RSR, LSR, RSL). This paper proposes new formulae for CSC family to find the shortest smooth path between the initial and final configurations of a car-like robot. The formulae is used for finding connection points explicitly between C\longrightarrowS and S\longrightarrowC which are necessary for real applications. The formulae have simple forms mainly because they are transformed into origin of their original coordinates of initial and target configuration, and derived from a standard forms which are a representative configuration of LSL and LSR type respectively. The proposed formulae, which are derived from the standard forms, are simple and new method.

  • In this paper, position control of a car-like mobile robot using a neural network is presented. positional information of the mobile robot is given by a laser range finder located remotely through wireless communication. The heading angle is measured by a gyro sensor. Considering these two sensor information as a reference, the robot posture is corrected by a cascaded controller. To improve the tracking performance, a neural network with a cascaded controller is used to compensate for any uncertainty in the robot. The neural network functions as a compensator to minimize the positional errors in on-line fashion. A car-like mobile robot is built as a test-bed and experimental studies of several controllers are conducted and compared. Experimental results show that the best position control performance can be achieved by a cascaded controller with a neural network.

  • By using the conceptual impedance and the elasticity of a serial chain of spring-damper system, a real-time collision-free trajectory generation algorithm is proposed. The reference points on a trajectory connected by the spring-damper system have a mechanism for self-Position adjustment to avoid a collision by the impedance, and the local adjustment of each reference point is propagated through the elasticity to a real robot at the end of the spring-damper system. As a result, the overall trajectory consisting of the reference points becomes free of collision with environmental obstacles and efficient having the shortest distance as possible. In this process, the reference points connected by the spring-damper system take role of virtual robot as global guidance for a real robot, and a cooperative optimization is carried out by the system of virtual robots. A control algorithm is proposed to implement the impedance for a car-like mobile robot.
