In this study, a concept of active sound enrichment (ASE) control system was implemented and demonstrated for improving engine sound quality inside the cabin of a passenger car during acceleration. Unlike the active noise control cancels the noise for disturbance rejection, the ASE adds additional sound to the noise for tracking control. This approach requires a new algorithm to provide additional artificial sound to the original engine sound using active control strategy to achieve a target sound profile, which is predefined to satisfy required interior sound quality. The ASE algorithm was implemented in a digital controller dSPACE DS1401 and real-time control experiment was accomplished in an actual car. The ASE control results show that the actively enriched sound of each engine order against RPM tracks the target profiles precisely and quickly and improves the discontinuity, the level ratios and the sound pressure level of each engine order. Thus it is anticipated the ASE system can be applied for the improvement of the engine sound quality inside the cabin during acceleration.

Unlike internal combustion engines, electric cars have little engine sound and very quiet, causing the following problems to occur. First of all, pedestrians are a threat to safety because they can't feel the car approaching. The driver is also unable to recognize how fast his car is driving at a certain speed. To solve these problems, electric cars should be artificially created and reused. This paper examines the problems of the Sampling engine sound currently being used and uses the engine sound to produce a sound engine sound for the solution. The sampling engine sound has some limitations in making natural engine sounds. To overcome this problem, we studied two methods of using software synthesizers. They found subtractive synthsizing and wavetable synthsizing, which compared wavetabe synthsizing with actual engine, sampling and subtractive methods to find the most similar to real engine sound. We found that data usage and production cost are more advantageous than sampling method and subtractive syndication method.

Hearing impaired persons are exposed to the danger since they can't be aware of many dangerous situations like fire alarms, car hones and so on. Therefore they need haptic or visual informations when they meet dangerous situations. In this paper, we design a dangerous sound detection engine for hearing impaired. We consider four dangerous indoor situations such as a boiled sound of kettle, a fire alarm, a door bell and a phone ringing. For outdoor, two dangerous situations such as a car horn and a siren of emergency vehicle are considered. For a test, 6 data sets are collected from those six situations. we extract LPC, LPCC and MFCC as feature vectors from the collected data and compare the vectors for feasibility. Finally we design a matching engine using an artificial neural network and perform classification tests. We perform classification tests for 3 times considering the use outdoors and indoors. The test result shows the feasibility for the dangerous sound detection.

Analyzing acoustic-structural systems such as automobiles and aircraft the FRF-based substructuring method is one of the most powerful tools. In this paper, an optimization procedure far the engine mount system of passenger car has been presented using the design sensitivity analysis based on the multi-domain FRF-based substructuring formulation. The proposed method is applied to an optimization problem of the engine mount system, of which objective is to minimize the interior sound over the concerned rpm range. The design variables selected are the stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushes. Plugging the gradient information calculated by the proposed method into nonlinear optimization software, we can obtain the optimal stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushings through design iterations. The optimized interior noise in the passenger car shows that the proposed method is very useful in the realistic situation.
This study analyzes the interior noise that is generated during acceleration of a passenger car in terms of car body structure and panel contribution. According to the transfer method, interior noise is classified into structure-borne noise and air-borne noise. Structure-borne noise is generated when the engine's vibration energy, an excitation source, is transferred to the car body through the engine mount and the driving system and the panel of the car body vibrates. When structure-borne noise resonates in the acoustic cavity of the car interior, acute booming noise is generated. This study describes plans for improving the car body structure and the panel form through a cause analysis of frequency ranges where the sound pressure level of the rear seat relative to the front seat is high. To this end, an analysis of the correlation between body attachment stiffness and acoustic sensitivity as well as a panel sensitive component analysis were conducted through a structural sound field coupled analysis. Through this study, via research on improving the car body structure in terms of reducing rear seat noise, stable performance improvement and light weight design before the proto-car stage can be realized. Reduction of the development period and test car stage is also anticipated.
Order spectrum analysis is widely used to grasp the features of noises due to powertrain system including engine and intake/exhaust system. It is known from many previous researches that order components related to the first and second firing frequencies of engine considerably affect the noise of car interior. The purpose of this paper is to find out the difference in sound quality: Pleasantness of car interior noise according to the change of its order spectrum. For this, car interior noises of 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines are recorded and their order spectrum levels are modified by applying adaptive digital filters. After subjective listening test employing paired comparison method is conducted, it is investigated that the level change of half-order components is a noticeable factor to improve Pleasantness of the car interior noises whereas level decrease of firing order does not always give the positive effect on its sound quality.

The international competition in car markets has continuously required the research about the sound quality of a car. The domestic carmakers have also invested a lot of money for the research and development of interior sound quality of passenger cars. Therefore, the aim of this research is to predict the customer's evaluation of a new vehicle. There are two major research works to achieve this goal in this research. The first one is to search questionnaires about the sound quality, which customers prefer, to identify the relationship between these questionnaires and sound metrics that is a psychoacoustics parameters, and to development sound indexes for the questionnaires. All tests for this work is proceed on the road test during acceleration. The second one is to balance the sound component (engine noise, booming noise, road noise and wind noise) of a passenger. This wok will be tested on the constant speed. All of research results will be contributed to the development of brand sound quality of a new passenger car.
This study is a study on System On Chip (SOC) that implements virtual engine sound in electric vehicles without engines, and realizes vivid engine sound by combining Adaptive Difference PCM (ADPCM) method and frequency modulation method for satisfaction of driver's needs and safety of pedestrians. In addition, by proposing an electronic sound synthesis algorithm applying Musical Instrument Didital Interface (MIDI), an engine sound synthesis method and a constitutive model of an engine sound generation system are presented. In order to satisfy both drivers and pedestrians, this study uses Controller Area Network (CAN) communication to receive information such as Revolution Per Minute (RPM), vehicle speed, accelerator pedal depressed amount, torque, etc., transmitted according to the driver's driving habits, and then modulates the frequency according to the appropriate preset parameters We implemented an interaction algorithm that accurately reflects the intention of the system and driver by using interpolation for the system, ADPCM algorithm for reducing the amount of information, and MIDI format information for making engine sound easier.
