광양만 잘피엽상에 서식하는 바다대벌레류의 계절변동 (Seasonal Variation of Caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda) on Blades of Zostera marina in Kwangyang Bay, Korea)

  • 1994년 6월에서 1995년 5월 사이 광양만 대도 주변의 잘피밭에서 Epifaunal sampler를 이용하여 매달 바다대벌레류를 채집하여 종조성과 계절변동을 조사하였다. 조사기간 동안 총 1과 1속 6종의 바다대벌레류가 출현하였다. 그 중 짧은팔바다대벌레 (Caprella tsugarensis)와 허리갈고리바다대벌레 (Csprella kroeyeri)가 각각 전체 개체수의 $53.9\%$$32.1\%$를 차지하며 우점하였다. 출현 종수, 개체수 모두 이른 여름철에 높았고 가을과 겨울철에는 낮아져 뚜렷한 계절변동을 보였다. 이러한 바다대벌레류의 계절변동은 잘피의 생체량 변동과 밀접한 관련을 보였다. 또한 어류의 포식압과도 연관이 있는 것으로 추정된다.

갈조류 양식 모자반(Sargassum fulvellum)과 해적생물에 대한 pH와 염분의 효과 (Effects of pH and Salinity on the Cultivated Brown Alga Sargassumfulvellum and Associated Animals)

  • The effects pH and salinity on the brown alga Sargassum fulvellum were investigated in the context of the removal of two major associated animals, Caprella scaura and Gammaropsis utinomi. Optimum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of S. fulvellum was also examined in the same experimental conditions as an index of stress. Experiments on pH and salinity tolerances of the two animal species indicated that mortality was more than 80% at extremes of pH (2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12) and salinity (0, 3.5, 7, 10, 44 psu) after a 5 min treatment. Lethal time (LT50) from pH 2 to pH 4 was less than 90 sec in C. scaura, and less than 70 sec in G. utinomi. From 0 to 10 psu, LT50 was less than 20 sec in C. scaura and less than 60 sec in G. utinomi. The quantum yield of S. fulvellum was not significantly different from controls within the pH range 4~10, and within the salinity range of 7-40 psu. When exposed to pH and salinity conditions outside these ranges, the effect of these factors on the removal of two animal species was higher, but quantum yield was highly reduced. These results indicate that the optimal conditions for removing the animal species without affecting optimum quantum yield were pH 4-10, and salinities 7-10 psu and 44 psu.

  • 저자가 1987년 2월에서 7월사이에 제주도 연안에서 채집한 바다대벌레과(Ca-prellidae)에 속하는 표본들과 1985년에 채집되어 단국대 생물학과에 보관되어있던 표본들을 대상으로 동정한 결과 5속 15종이 확인되었는데 이중 5속 5종은 한국 미기록 종이어서 새로이 기재하고 도판을 작성하였다. 이로써 Korean Straits를 제외한 한국연안에서 보고된 종은 모두 26종이 되었다.

Amphipods(Crustacea: Malacostraca) fauna from Chujado Island in Korea

  • A faunal study on Amphipods belonging to the class Malacostraca was conducted 26-29 August 2021 at 12 sites in Chujado Island, Korea. This study found that 68 amphipod species in 39 genera, 19 families were living on Chujado Island. Among these 19 families, the family Caprellidae (20 species) showed the highest abundance. Ampithoidae (7 species) and Dexaminidae (6 species) were subdominant families. The species Stenothoe valida Dana, 1852 (found at 10 of 12 sites) was the most frequent and widespread species. Caprella scaura Templeton, 1836 was identified at 9 of 12 sites and had the highest frequency of appearance among 20 species of Caprellidae. Among the 68 species, Ampithoe waialua J.L. Barnard, 1970 and Melita nagatai Yamato, 1987 are newly recorded species in Korean fauna. These newly recorded species are fully illustrated and compared with related species. We provide an amphipod fauna in Chujado Island with a list, figures, and a table.

  • On the basis of monthly samples, we investigated the seasonal variation and feeding habits of amphipods inhabiting Zostera marina beds in Gwangyang Bay. Dominant species $(>1\%$ of the total number of amphipods) consist of 5 gammarids (Gammaropsis japonicus, Jassa slatteryi, Pontogenia rostrata, Atylus collingi and Ceinina japonica) and 1 caprellid (Caprella tsugarensis). Mean densities of amphipods varied from the highest of $63,148\;ind.\;m^{-2}$ in-May to the lowest of $1,247\;ind.\;m^{-2}$ in September. G. japonicus and J. slatteryi dominated in summer whereas C. japonica in autumn and winter. C. japonica was found to be a carnivorous feeder consuming mainly harpacticoid copepods and unidentified crustaceans, whereas G. japonicus, J. slatteryi, and C. tsugarensis consumed both phytoplankton and detritus. Seasonal densities of amphipods were significantly related with the shoot standing crop of the eelgrass and its epiphyte. Also densities of amphipods displayed significant difference in related with the shoot density of the eelgrass among sampling stations. These results suggest that the biological interactions between the eelgrass and amphipods as well as between the carnivorous and the herbivorous amphipods may be important in the seasonal variation of amphipods inhabiting Z. marine beds.

안정동위원소 분석을 이용한 이식된 지네지누아리의 생태학적 기능 평가 (Isotopic Assessment of Ecological Function of a Transplanted Macroalgal Habitat (Grateloupia asiatica))

  • To assess the trophic function of an artificial macroalgal habitat, we compared the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of two amphipods (Caprella sp. and Ampithoe sp.) and their potential food sources in a transplanted macroalgal habitat (Grateloupia asiatica) with those in a natural habitat. There were no significant differences in the isotopic values of both consumers and their potential food sources between the transplanted and natural habitats. Such isotopic similarities between the two sites indicate a comparable resource consumer relationship. Additionally, our results showed similar isotopic niche areas and high dietary overlap (>65%) of the two amphipods between the transplanted and natural sites, suggesting that the transplanted habitat plays ecological roles similar to the natural habitat. Overall, isotopic assessment can provide information on the trophic function of diverse transplanted macroalgal habitats and improve post-monitoring efforts in the management of artificial ecosystems.

Amphipod (Crustacea: Malacostraca) fauna of the continental shelf region in the Southern Sea of Korea

  • A faunal study on the marine amphipods at eight sites of the continental shelf region in the Southern Sea, Korea was conducted from 16-17 August 2022. In this study, 26 amphipod species in 19 genera and 14 families were found. Among these 14 families, the family Ampeliscidae with six species showed the highest abundance, followed by the family Caprellidae with five species. Amphipods were collected using conical nets, MOCNESS nets, SM grabs, and trawls. When using the SM Grab for collecting benthic sediment, 15 out of a total of 26 amphipod species were surveyed, indicating the highest diversity of amphipod species. Out of the total 26 species, four identified species (Ampelisca pygmaea Schellenberg, 1938; Byblis longiflagelis Ren, 1998; Caprella iniquilibra Mayer, 1903; Primno latreillei Stebbing, 1888) and five unidentified species(Themisto sp., Liljeborgia sp., Dulichiella sp., Cranocephalus sp., Primno sp.) are newly recorded in Korean fauna. These newly recorded species are fully illustrated and compared with related species. We provide a list amphipod fauna in Southern Sea of Korea including figures and tables.

장봉도 갯벌의 쥐노래미(Hexagrammos otakii)와 조피볼락(Sebastes schiegeli)의 섭식생태 (Comparative Feeding Ecology of Sympatric Greenling Hexagrammos otakii and Schlegel's Black Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli in the Jnngbong Tidal Flat, Incheon, Korea)

  • The comparative feeding ecology of greenling Hexagrammos otakii and Schlegel's black rockfish Sebastes schlereli populations was investigated in the Jangbong tidal flat near Incheon, Korea. Monthly samples were taken using a modified otter trawl from November 1999 to January 2001. The stomach contents of 124 greenling and 115 Schlegel's black rockfish were analyzed. The diet of H. otakii was dominated by the amphipods Gammaropsis iaponicus, Caprella scaura, Isaeopsis sp. and Monocorophium acherusicum, the shrimps Latreutes mucronatus and Alpheus japonicus, the mysid Neomysis orientalis and the bivalve Mytilus edulis. In contrast, S. schlegeli mainly fed on the mysids N. orientalis, N japonica, and N. awatschensis, the shrimps Exopalaemon carinicauda, A. japonicus and L. mucronatus, and the fish Pholis fangi and unidentified gobiids. A comparison of the frequency and abundance of food items showed that crustaceans (e.g. amphipods, mysids and shrimps) were important foods for both species. Their main dietary components, however differed which is probably due to differences in the spatial distribution of the two species and their prey items. In conclusion, greenling and Schlegel's black rockfish, despite being sympatric on a tidal flat have distinct food habits and low dietary overlap (Schooner's index: 0.1). These results indicate, to some extent, resource partitioning for the maximum utilization of available foods in the tidal flat.

  • 본 연구에서는 톳 양식에서 pH 및 염분농도의 조절에 의한, 환경친화적인 해적생물 구제 방법을 개발하고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 톳의 내성범위를 구하고, 친환경적인 해적생물 구제법을 확립하고자 하였다. 톳에는 생리적 영향을 미치지 않는 친환경적인 해적동물 구제법으로서, pH 4 이하 조건과 pH 10 이상의 조건, 염분농도 10 psu 이하의 조건 및 44 psu 조건에서 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다.

통영 연안 가두리 양식용 그물에 가입되는 오손생물군집의 시·공간적 비교 (Spatial-temporal Variation of Fouling Organisms Recruited on a Fishing Net based on Community Structure, Tongyeong, Southern Coast of Korea)

  • To understand the composition and community changes of benthic species by water depth (5 m, 20 m, 30 m) in the cage facilities, net substrate made of fish cages were installed at intervals of 2 months from March to September 2019, which is the main period of sessile organism recruitment. Water temperature and salinity varied in the ranges of 1~5℃ and 1~4 mg/L at 5 m from June to August, respectively, and less difference was observed according to water depth in other investigation periods. A total of 37 benthic animals were recruited, and Kamptozoa unid., Caprella scaura and Jassa slatteryi were verified during the entire study period. Mytilus galloprovincialis, a Mediterranean mussel, showed seasonality dominant only from spring to early summer (March to July). The community structure classified by temporal and spatial factors, and Bugula neritina, Kamptozoa unid., and Sertularella sp. contributed to the formation of the community. The depth of 5 m was exposed to environmental changes in water temperature and salinity temporally, so there was a seasonal variation in the composition of the sessile organism, but at depths of 20 m and 30 m, there was less significant environmental change and it showed relatively stable than 5 m.
