When a substrate with a pixel-defining layer (bank) is coated, there arises capillary force due to surface tension and adhesive forces between a solvent and the bank layer. It brings in a degradation of film thickness and emission uniformities within pixels. With an attempt to suppress it, we have performed fluid flow simulations of capillary arise by varying the contact angle of bank and the bank structure. We have first demonstrated that the fluid flow model can reproduce the capillary phenomenon that was observed experimentally. It has been found that capillary arise can be suppressed using a hydrophobic material for the bank layer. Furthermore, it was suppressed by tilting the sidewalls outwardly (i.e., using a positive photoresistor). We can obtain very uniform films when the slope is $50^{\circ}$ with the contact angle of $40^{\circ}$.
The mobility of groundwater in the soil environment has an important role in the soil environment and absorption of plant. Therefore, studies on the mobility of groundwater considering the physical and chemical properties of soil is very important. In this study, movement of water due to change in soil particle size were observed by capillary rise. The height of the capillaries was measured according to capillary diameter, temperature and solution concentration. The inner diameter of each capillary itself is 0.012, 0.016, 0.024, 0.027 cm, and experiments were performed at $22^{\circ}C$. As a result, the height of the capillaries decreased with increasing capillary diameter, and the solution temperature but increased with increasing concentration. Changes in the height of the capillaries are interpreted to related with surface tension by the Young-Laplace equation. Also on the mobility of groundwater, the increase of water and soil temperatures can be significant factors caused by ion strength and global warming as well as pores in the soil particles. The results of this study is considered to provide the basic data on the behavior of groundwater in the soil environment.
The correlation between the bitter taste and the surface tension was found for bitter tasting, aqueous solutions. By the Szyszkowski's equation, the surface tension (STR) and taste curves (JND) were derived more clearly using the Techplot program. The specific capillary activity (log b values) for bitter tasting solutions are negatively correlated to the recognition threshold. It was shown that a more bitter substances has greater capillary activity. The correlation between the recognition threshold $(log\;C_{1})$ and the substance specific constant (a and b values) of sensory (JND) and surface tension values indicates good agreement. This means that the model of surface area adsorption in the solution/air system can apply also for the sensory model microvillus membrane in the mouth.

This paper deals with the flow caused by a two-dimensional pulsating source, which moves with a constant horizontal speed beneath the free surface. The analysis is based on lincar potential theory including surface tension effects. In the case of subcritical reduced frequencies $\tau<1/4(\tau=U_{\omega}/g$, U=constant speed, $\omega$=circular frequency, g=gravitational acceleration), six wave components arc found. Two of them are largely affected by surface tension, which propagate ahead of the source in the direction of and opposite to the steady translation, respectively. The rest are almost identical with those found by Haskind(1954), i.e. for which the surface tension effect is negligible. For low oscillation frequencies, the resonant frequency still exists at $\tau$ only slightly greater than 1/4. For oscillation frequencies greater than $\nu(={\omega}^2/g)>20$, the surface tension effect is so significant that it disperses generated waves and consequently the singular phenomenon is removed. However, in addition to the gravity breaking, capillary breakings occur when the translation speed coincides with the minimum capillary celerity.

In this paper, a high-speed imaging and an image processing technique have been applied to detect the position of a meniscus as a function of time in the micro capillary flows. Two fluids with low and high viscosities, ethylene glycol and glycerin, were dropped into the entrance well of a circular capillary tube. The filling times of the meniscus in both cases of ethylene glycol and glycerin were compared with the theoretical models - Washburn model and its modified model based on Newman's dynamic contact angle equation. To evaluate the model coefficients of Newman's dynamic contact angle, time-varying contact angles under the capillary flows were measured using an image processing technique. By considering the dynamic contact angle, the estimated filling time from the modified Washburn model agrees well with the experimental data. Especially, for the lower-viscosity fluid, the consideration of dynamic contact angle is more significant than for the higher-viscosity fluid.
Usual experimental adsorption isotherms as a function of relative humidity were constructed from adsorbed water contents in soils, which were kept more than 2 days in vacuum desiccators with constant humidities controlled by sulfuric acids of various concentrations. From the experimental data, the adsorption surface areas were calculated on the basis of the existing adsorption theory, such as Langmuir, BET, and Aranovich. Based on the Gibbs function describing chemical potential of perfect gas, the relative humidities in the desiccators were transformed into their chemical potentials, which were assumed to be the same as the potentials of equilibratedly adsorbed water in soils. Moreover, the water potentials were again transformed into the equivalent capillary pressures, heads of capillary rise, and equivalent radius of capillary pores, on the basis of Laplace equation for surface tension pressure of spherical bubbles in water. Adsorption quantity distributions were calculated on the profile of chemical potentials of the adsorbed water, equivalent adsorption and/or capillary pressures, and equivalent capillary radius. The suggested theories were proved through its application for the prediction of temperature rise of sulfuric acid due to hydration heat. Adsorption heat calculated on the basis of the potential difference was dependant on various factors, such as surface area, equilibrium constants in Langumuir, BET, etc.

The effect of capillary cross-section geometry on evaporation is investigated in terms of the meniscus shape, evaporation rate and evaporation-induced flow for circular, square and rectangular cross-sectional capillaries. The shapes of water and ethanol menisci are not much different from each other in square and rectangular capillaries even though the surface tension of water is much larger than that of ethanol. On the other hand, the shapes of water and ethanol menisci are very different from each other in circular capillary. The averaged evaporation fluxes in circular and rectangular capillaries are measured by tracking the meniscus position. At a given position, the averaged evaporation flux in rectangular capillaries is much larger than that in circular capillary with comparable hydraulic diameter. The flow near the evaporating meniscus is also measured using micro-PIV, so that the rotating vortex motion is observed near the evaporating ethanol and methanol menisci except for the case of methanol meniscus in rectangular capillary. This difference is considered to be due to the existence of corner menisci at the four comers.
This study was conducted to explore the tensile strength models in granular soil at the full range of unsaturated state. Direct tension experiments were carried out with a newly developed direct tension technique. The measured experimental data were compared with theoretical models developed by Rumpf and Schubert for monosized ideal particulate solids at the unsaturated state. To do this, the soil-water characteristic curve obtained from a suction-saturation experiment was used to define the unsaturation state and the negative pore water pressure with different water content levels, which are important factors in theoretical tensile strength models. The nonlinear behavior of the tensile strength for unsaturated granular soil at the pendular state is appropriately simulated with Rumpf's model. For the funicular and capillary states, the predicted trend by Schubert's model is properly matched with the experimental data: tensile strength steadily increases and reaches a maximum value and then decreases until it reaches zero. This comparison supports the concept that the tensile strength of unsaturated real granular soil can be approximately simulated with theoretical models.
Extensive investigations on cast to cast variations observed in steels have underlined the role of thermocapillary or surface tension driven fluid flow in welding operations. The behavior of weld pool under the electric arc is however affected by possible arc modifications linked to microchemistry variations in materials & this limits to some extent the real contribution from surface tension effects. Thus, electron beam welding with high vacuum was used to investigate thermo-capillary effects on thin austenitic stainless steels & nickel based alloys. The weld pool was monitored by video observations to estimate the importance of fluid flow during the melting & solidification phase. The results underline the importance of fluid flow on [mal solidification.
