  • Vibration, buckling and dynamic stability of a cantilever rectangular plate subjected to an in-plane sinusoidally varying load applied along the free end are analyzed. The thin plate small deflection theory is used. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed to solve vibration and buckling of the plate. The dynamic stability problem is solved by using the Hamilton principle to drive time variables. The resulting time variables are solved by the harmonic balance method. Buckling properties and natural frequencies of the plate are shown at first. Unstable regions are presented for various loading conditions. Simple parametric resonances and combination resonances with sum type are obtained for various loading conditions, static load and damping.

  • This paper analyzes three cantilever-types of piezoelectric actuators of bimorph, unimorph and monomorph in same volume to maximize tip displacement. Tip displacement of each actuator is theoretically derived by using beam theory and numerically verified by FEM. It also investigates the tip displacements of each actuator due to the change of elastic layer. It shows that the piezoelectric actuator of bimorph generates the largest tip displacement among them.

  • The microfabricated test structures were used in order to evaluate the stress characteristics in films. The test structures were fabricated using surface micromachining technique, including HF vapor phase etching as an effective release method. The fabricated structures were micro strain gauge, cantilever-type vernier gauge and bridge for stress measurement, and cantilever for stress gradient measurement. The strain was measures by observing the deformation of the structures occurred after release etching and the amount of deformation can be detected by micro vernier gauge, which has gauge resolution of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The detection principles and the degree of precision for the measured strain were also discussed. The characteristics of residual stress in LPCVD polysilicon films were studied using these test structures. The stress gradient due to the stress variation through the film thickness was calculated by measuring the deflection at the cantilever free end.

  • Near-filed optical storage using cantilever aperture tip is a promising way fer next generation optical data storage. To enhance the speed of reading and writing data, gap between tip and media should be controlled fast and precisely within near field region. In this paper, several PZT actuators are analyzed far constructing dual servo control algorithm: coarse actuators(stact. PZT, bimorph PZI) for media surface inclination and One actuator(film PZT) for media surface roughness. Dynamic analysis of stack PZT, bimorph PZT, and film PZT are performed through the frequency response. Based on the frequency response and mathematical model, fast analog controller is designed.

  • This work has suggested corrugation beam as a new structure for mechanical resonators. Micro beam resonators based on 3C-SiC films which have two side corrugations along the length of beams were simulated by finite-element modeling and compared to a flat rectangular beam with the same dimension. With the dimension of $36\times12\times0.5{\mu}m^3$, the flat cantilever has resonant frequency of 746 kHz. Meanwhile, this frequency reaches 1.252 MHz with the corrugated cantilever which has the same dimension with flat type but corrugation width of $6{\mu}m$ and depth of $0.4{\mu}m$. It is expected that mechanical resonators with corrugations will be very helpful for the research of sensing devices with high-resolution, high-performance oscillators and filters in wireless communications as well as measurement in basic physics.

  • In this paper, an alternative analytical method is presented to evaluate the nonlinear vibration behavior of single and double tapered cantilever beams. The admissible lateral displacement function satisfying the geometric boundary conditions of a single or double tapered cantilever beam is derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method. Based on the Lagrange method and the Newton Harmonic Balance (NHB) method, analytical approximate solutions in closed and explicit form are obtained. These approximate solutions show excellent agreement with those of numeric method for small as well as large amplitude. Moreover, due to brevity of expressions, the present analytical approximate solutions are convenient to investigate effects of various parameters on the large amplitude vibration response of tapered beams.

  • A seismic evaluation is made of the response to horizontal ground shaking of cantilever retaining walls using the finite element model in three dimensional space whose verification is provided analytically through the modal analysis technique in case of the assumptions of fixed base, complete bonding behavior at the wall-soil interface, and elastic behavior of soil. Thanks to the versatility of the finite element model, the retained medium is then idealized as a uniform, elastoplastic stratum of constant thickness and semi-infinite extent in the horizontal direction considering debonding behavior at the interface in order to perform comprehensive soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses. The parameters varied include the flexibility of the wall, the properties of the soil medium, and the characteristics of the ground motion. Two different finite element models corresponding with flexible and rigid wall configurations are studied for six different soil types under the effects of two different ground motions. The response quantities examined incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that the wall flexibility and soil properties have a major effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining walls and should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. Furthermore, the results of the numerical investigations are expected to be useful for the better understanding and the optimization of seismic design of this particular type of retaining structure.

  • The dynamic characteristics of composite tool bars depend on the clamping conditions such as clamping force, stiffness and surface characteristics of clamping parts as well as the basic structures. Therefore, in this work, the effects of clamping part conditions on the dynamic characteristics of cantilever type composite machine tool structures with clamped joint were investigated because the cantilever type machine tool structures are ideal cases for composite application to increase the natural frequency and damping of structures. New design of the clamping part was developed in order to improve shear properties of the clamping part and dynamic characteristics of composite tool bars. From FE analysis and Impulse response tests, dynamic characteristics were obtained with respect to the clamping part conditions of the new design.

  • Silicate glass is usually a brittle and plate-like material, and it is difficult to measure the elastic modulus by the traditional method. This paper develops a test method for the glass elastic modulus based on the fundamental frequency of the cantilever beam with an elastic support and a free end. The method installs the beam-type specimen on a semi-rigid support to form an elastic support-free end beam. The analytic solution of the stiffness coefficients of the elastic support is developed by the fundamental frequency of the two specimens with known elastic modulus. Then, the glass elastic modulus is measured by the fundamental frequency of the specimens. The method significantly improves the measurement accuracy and is suitable for the elastic modulus with the beam-type specimen whether the glass is homogeneous or not. Several tests on the elastic modulus measurement are conducted to demonstrate the reliability and validity of the test method.
