By estimating environment light distribution, we can generate realistic shadow images in AR(augmented reality). When we estimate light distribution without sensing equipment, environment light model, geometry of virtual object, and surface reflection property are needed. Previous study using 3D marker builds surrounding light environment with a geodesic dome model and analyzes shadow images. Because this method employs candidate shadow maps in initial scene setup, however, it is difficult to estimate precise light information. This paper presents a novel light estimation method based on hierarchical light distribution model subdivision. By using an overlapping area ratio of the segmented shadow and candidate shadow map, we can make hierarchical subdivision of light geodesic dome.

With the advance of the environment where we can get various multimedia contents, adult image detection has become an important issue these days. In this paper, we suggest a method of robustly detecting navel areas from input images which can be usefully utilized in adult image detection. The suggested algorithm first extracts face regions and extracts candidate nipple areas using a nipple map. Our method then selects only actual nipple regions by filtering candidate areas with geometrical features and an average nipple filter. Subsequently, the method robustly detects navel areas by using the structural relation with the nipple areas and applying edge and saturation images. Experimental results show that the suggested algorithm can effectively detect navel regions.
This paper proposes an automatic segmentation method of cortical bone and trabecular bone and describes an implementation of structural analysis method of trabecular bone in micro-CT images. The proposed segmentation method extract bone region with binarization using a threshold value. Next, it finds adjacent contour lines from outer boundary line into inward direction and sets candidate regions of cortical bone. Next it remove cortical bone region by finding the candidate cortical region of which the average pixel value is maximum. We implemented the method which computes four structural indicators BV/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.Sp, Tb.N by using VTK(Visualization ToolKit) and sphere fitting algorithm. We applied the implemented method to twenty proximal femur of mouses and compared with the manual segmentation method. Experimental result shows that the average error rates between the proposed segmentation method and the manual segmentation method are less than 3% for the four structural indicatiors. This result means that the proposed method can be used instead of the combersome and time consuming manual segmentation method.

This paper describes a vision-based and real-time system for detecting road signs from within a moving vehicle. The proposed system has the standard architecture with adaboost algorithm to detect road signs in real time. And it uses the value of vortical plane in the process of extracting candidate areas in view of fact that there are vertically most of signs on roads. Although being useful for detecting objects in real time, the conventional adaboost algorithm deteriorates the performance of detection rate in complex circumstance by reason of using only integral images as features. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes the method that improves the reliability of candidates as using the value of vertical plane for extracting candidate area and improves the performance of the detection rate as using integral images to which we add the kind of feature prototype. The experiments of this paper show that the detection rate of the proposed method has higher than that of the conventional adaboost algorithm under the real complex circumstance of roads.

This paper describes facial component detection and skew correction algorithm for face recognition. We use a priori knowledge and models about isolated regions to detect eye location from the face image captured in natural office environments. The relations between human face components are represented by several rules. We adopt an edge detection algorithm using sobel mask and 8-connected labelling algorith using array pointers. A labeled image has many isolated components. initially, the eye size rules are used. Eye size rules are not affected much by irregular input image conditions. Eye size rules size, and limited in the ratio between gorizontal and vertical sizes. By the eye size rule, 2 ~ 16 candidate eye components can be detected. Next, candidate eye parirs are verified by the information of location and shape, and one eye pair location is decided using face models about eye and eyebrow. Once we extract eye regions, we connect the center points of the two eyes and calculate the angle between them. Then we rotate the face to compensate for the angle so that the two eyes on a horizontal line. We tested 120 input images form 40 people, and achieved 91.7% success rate using eye size rules and face model. The main reasons of the 8.3% failure are due to components adjacent to eyes such as eyebrows. To detect facial components from the failed images, we are developing a mouth region processing module.

This paper presents a fire detection algorithm with a minimal false detection rate, intended for a thermal imaging surveillance environment, whose properties vary depending on temporal conditions of day or night and environmental changes. This algorithm was designed to minimize the false detection alarm rate while ensuring a high detection rate, as required in fire detection applications. It was necessary to reduce false fire detections due to non-flame elements occurring when existing fixed threshold-based fire detection methods were applied. To this end, adaptive flame thresholds that varied depending on the characteristics of input images, as well as the center of gravity of the heat-source and hot-source regions, were analyzed in an attempt to minimize such non-flame elements in the phase of selecting flame candidate blocks. Also, to remove any false detection elements caused by camera shaking, one of the most frequently raised issues at outdoor sites, preliminary decision thresholds were adaptively set to the motion pixel ratio of input images to maximize the accuracy of the preliminary decision. Finally, in addition to the preliminary decision results, the texture correlation and intensity of the flame candidate blocks were averaged for a specific period of time and tested for their conformity with the fire decision conditions before making the final decision. To verify the fire detection performance of the proposed algorithm, a total of ten test videos were subjected to computer simulation. As a result, the fire detection accuracy of the proposed algorithm was determined to be 94.24%, with minimum false detection, demonstrating its improved performance and practicality compared to previous fixed threshold-based algorithms.
This paper describes a novel and efficient algorithm, which extracts focused objects from still images with low depth-of-field (DOF). The algorithm unfolds into four modules. In the first module, a HOS map, in which the spatial distribution of the high-frequency components is represented, is obtained from an input low DOF image [1]. The second module finds OOI candidate by using characteristics of the HOS. Since it is possible to contain some holes in the region, the third module detects and fills them. In order to obtain an OOI, the last module gets rid of background pixels in the OOI candidate. The experimental results show that the proposed method is highly useful in various applications, such as image indexing for content-based retrieval from huge amounts of image database, image analysis for digital cameras, and video analysis for virtual reality, immersive video system, photo-realistic video scene generation and video indexing system.

This paper proposes a method for segmenting objects from the background in IR(Infrared) images based on GrabCut algorithm. The GrabCut algorithm needs the window encompassing the interesting known object. This procedure is processed by user. However, to apply it for object recognition problems in image sequences. the location of window should be determined automatically. For this, we adopted the Otsu' algorithm for segmenting the interesting but unknown objects in an image coarsely. After applying the Otsu' algorithm, the window is located automatically by blob analysis. The GrabCut algorithm needs the probability distributions of both the candidate object region and the background region surrounding closely the object for estimating the Gaussian mixture models(GMMs) of the object and the background. The probability distribution of the background is computed from the background window, which has the same number of pixels within the candidate object region. Experiments for various IR images show that the proposed method is proper to segment out the interesting object in IR image sequences. To evaluate performance of proposed segmentation method, we compare other segmentation methods.

In this paper we propose an algorithm to extract the license plate regions from Korean car images. The idea of this paper is that we first find the four digits in the input car image and then segment the plate region using the digit information. Out method has advantage of segmenting simultaneously the plate regions and four digits regions. The first step finds and groups the connected components with proper sizes as candidate digits. The second step applies an serial alignment condition to find out probable 4-digits. In the third step, we recognize the candidate digits and assign the confidence values to each of them. The final step extracts the license plate region which has the highest confidence value. We used the Perfect Metrics classification algorithm to estimate the confidence. In our experiment, we got 97.23% and 95.45% correct detection rates, 0.09% and 0.11% false detection rates for 4,600 daytime and 264 nighttime images, respectively.

This paper presents a procedure to extract lane line models using a set of proposed methods. Firstly, an image warping method based on homography is proposed to transform a target image into an image which is efficient to find lane pixels within a certain region in the image. Secondly, a method to use the combination of the results of edge detection and HSL (Hue, Saturation, and Lightness) transform is proposed to detect lane candidate pixels with reliability. Thirdly, erroneous candidate lane pixels are eliminated using a selection area method. Fourthly, a method to fit lane pixels to quadratic polynomials is proposed. In order to test the validity of the proposed procedure, a set of black-box images captured under varying illumination and noise conditions were used. The experimental results show that the proposed procedure could overcome the problems of color-only and edge-only based methods and extract lane pixels and model the lane line geometry effectively within less than 0.6 seconds per frame under a low-cost computing environment.
