  • A new series of carbazole based 2,4-disubstituted thiazole derivatives were synthesized. All the synthesized compounds were tested for their cytotoxicity against three different cancer cell lines A549, MCF-7, and HT29. Some of these compounds showed good cytotoxicity. These compounds were also evaluated for antioxidant activity. Compounds 3a, 3b, 3d-f and 3i showed higher antioxidant activity than standard BHT.

  • Many attention has been focused on developing new chemotherapeutic agents for a treatment of cancer from natural products. From Carpesium divaricatum S. et Z. (Compositae), various monoterpenoid compounds were isolated and exhibited mild antitumor activity against human tumor cell lines. These facts prompted us to explore the structure-activity relationship of these compounds. The synthesis of monoterpenoid compound was accomplished by Fries rearrangement, Grignard reaction, elimination, allylic oxidation, esterification and epoxidation as key steps. The results of in vitro cytotoxicity (A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF498, HCT15) of the synthesised compounds are as follows: First of all, epoxide moiety is prerequisite for cytotoxic activity in diester compound. Any kind of compounds with olefin or diol moiety instead of epoxide ring exhibited poor or mild cytotoxic activity respectively. Of o-acetoxy and isobutoxy epoxy esters, p-sub-stituted phenylacetate compounds exhibited high cytotoxic activities against SK-MEL-2 and HCT15.

  • For the development of novel antitumor agents, we designed and synthesized terpyridines, and their biological activities were evaluated. Although most of the newly prepared terpyridines showed strong cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines, [2,2';6',2"]-terpyridine displayed the most significant cytotoxicity.

  • The activity-oriented fractionation of Psoralea corylifolia led to an isolation of a (+) bakuchio 1 as an activ eprinciple of its antitumoral property in vitro 1 was observed to exhibit a mild cytotoxicity against five kinds of cultured human cancer cell lines, i. e. the A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF-498 and HCT15. The synthesized 2, 3-epoxide of (+)-bakuchiol 3 showed the similar activity as the (+) bakuchiol 1, whereas the other oxidation derivatives 4 and 5 including the acetyl (+) bakuchiol 2 showed a decreased activity.

  • Dibenzyl-g-butyrolactone and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-naphthoic acid $\gamma$-lactone (TNL) derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxic activity against some cancer cell lines. It was found that TNL derivatives with a shorter distance between C-4 in ring A and C'-2 in ring C were more cytotoxic, while dibenzyl-${\gamma}$-butyrolactones with a longer one were nearly inactive. In TNL series, presence of 3,4-dioxy group in ring A and 2-methoxy group in ring C was essential for the enhancement of the activity.

  • Two known modified dipeptides, trichodermamide A (1) and aspergillazine A (2), were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the metabolite of a marine-derived fungus Spicaria elegans, and were found to have a weak cytotoxic effect on three cancer cell lines P388, A-549, and HL-60 agreed. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the isolation of compounds 1 and 2 from the fungus Spicaria elegans and their cytotoxic effect.

Their chemical structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods to be (E)-3-hydroxymegastigm-7-en-9-one (1), (3S,5R,6S,7E)- megastigma-7-ene-3,5,6,9-tetrol (2), dendranthemoside B (3), icariside $B_2$ (4), sedumoside $F_1$ (5), luteolin (6), quercetin 3-0-${\beta}$-D-glucuronide (7), quercetin 3-0-${\beta}$-D-glucoside (8), isorhamnetin 3-0-rutinoside (9), alphitolic acid (10), maslinic acid (11), and N-methylasimilobine (12). Norsesquiterpenoids (1-5) and triterpenes (10-11) were isolated for the first time from this plant. Compounds 6 and 10-12 exhibited considerable cytotoxicity against four human cancer cell lines in vitro using a SRB bioassay.
