  • Purpose: Town of Woldia, a semi-arid region in the Northern Wollo region of Ethiopia, faces water supply shortage in general, though the town possesses a running stream of clean water throughout the year. This study is aimed at analyzing the possibility of using rainwater for water scarcity and non-potable water needs of the Woldia University. A careful study and analysis have been made to assess the feasibility of using rainwater in place of the tap water supply. Research design and methodology: This study was done inside the main campus of Woldia University located in Woldia town. The runoff water from the roof of buildings was studied, by the time of rainfall in the town. Also, the budget needed for implementing a rainwater harvesting system was calculated. Results: The findings of the study clearly indicates that the requirements of the water to use for flushing, cleaning, and washing toilets in the administrative buildings and classrooms can be satisfied by using rainwater as an alternative to tap water. Conclusion: Based on the results the study finds it is benefitable for the Woldia University to install the rainwater harvesting system at the earliest to solve the water problems prevailing in the current situation.

  • This study aims to investigate and analyze the actual conditions of the ecological ponds built in the campus sites of the elementary, middle and high schools which currently manage ecological ponds in order to find problems and directions for improvement concerning the management of the ponds as a way to build nature-friendly ecological ponds which can be used as an ecological work-study site on school campus: this study also intends to provide systematic and technological directions for the management and operation of the ecological pond. This study has selected 10 schools in North Chungcheong Province, where ponds are constructed, and investigated actual conditions of the ponds based on the survey, analysis, and evaluation standards compatible with the school environments, and finally judged the general relevancy of the ponds. The results of this study make us conclude that the most important issue to be considered in the processes of selection and investigation for school ecological pond is the location of the pond.

Questionnaires were collected from 432 students and statistically analyzed according to residence type. One thirds of students took meals irregularly and skipped breakfast because of no time. Both Relative self-boarding and dormitory boarding group skipped breakfast more frequently than home group(p<0.01). The carbonated drink was most frequently chosen during late-night eating. The most favorite alcoholic beverage was soju and 54.7% of students drank soju 1~2 times per week near campus. Almost half of them took late-night foods 1~2 times per week at home(51.8%), near campus(25.8%), near home(15.6%), down town(6.9%). The percentage of late-night eating near campus was higher in dormitory boarding group than both home group and relative self-boarding group(p<0.001). Late-night foods were selected based on taste in 1~2 man won and enjoyed with 2~3 friends until 12 pm. The more in relative self-boarding group chose late-night foods based on taste than both home and dormitory boarding group(p<0.05). The main intake method for late-night foods was delivery. The results of this study suggest that nutritional education is required for relative self-boarding group to change dietary behavior and to select proper late-night foods for their health.

  • This study was conducted as a basic data for preparing future management alternatives by analyzing the status and characteristics of invasive alien plants by land-use type based on the formation of a new town in Goyang Siksa district. As a result, the invasive alien plants in the Goyang Siksa district were 20 families 46 genera 57 taxa; according to the land-use type, the residential area(Wi City apartment complex) is 7 families 10 genera 12 taxa, the public facilities area(Dongguk University campus) is 17 families 40 genera 47 taxa, the mixed forest is 5 families 10 genera 10 taxa, the rice paddy is 5 families 6 genera 7 taxa, river(Mt. Gyeondal creek) is 7 families 13 genera 15 taxa were appeared. The life-form of invasive alien plants in Goyang Siksa district is annuals, the origin is America, the introduction time is third period(1962~the present), and the diffusion grade is wide spread(5 grade) species. It was higher than other types. The naturalization index by location was 31.9% in river(Mt. Gyeondal creek), 21.2% in rice paddy, 16.7% in mixed forest, 15.5% in public facilities area(Dongguk University campus), and 8.5% in residential area(Wi City apartment complex). As a result of comparing the naturalization index by regions with the previous studies, it is judged that there are differences due to the environment such as urbanization progress, size, area, population inflow and location conditions. Although many new towns have been established to date, there is a lack of research on flora (including invasive alien plants) as a basic data for preparing management alternatives. Therefore, Through this study, basic data on the management of exotic plants by land use unit in urban areas can be provided.
