  • A new hybrid technique using several sub-populations having completely different evolutionary behaviors is proposed to increase the possibility to quickly find the global optimum of continuous optimization problem. It has three sub-populations. Two NPOSA algorithms showing good performance in the problem having a rugged fitness function are applied to two sub-populations and a self-adaptive evolutionary algorithm to the other sub-population. Sub-populations evolve in different manners and the interaction among these sub-populations lead to the global optimum quickly. The efficiency of this technique is verified through benchmark test functions. Finally, the algorithm with three sub-populations has been applied to seek for the optimal camera calibration parameters. After an error function has been defined using measured feature points of a calibration block, it has been shown that the algorithm searches for the camera parameters that minimize the error function.

  • In this paper, we experimentally investigated the precision of 3D positioning using 4S-Van images in photograrmmetric perspective. The 3D calibration target was built over building facade outside and was captured separately by two CCD cameras installed in 4S-Van. After then, we determined the interior orientation parameter for each CCD camera through self-calibration technique. With the interior orientation parameter computed, the bundle adjustment was performed to obtain the exterior orientation parameters simultaneously for two CCD cameras using calibration target image and object coordinates. The reverse lens distortion coefficients were computed and acquired by least squares method so as to introduce lens distortion into epipolar line. It was shown that the reverse lens distortion coefficients could transform image coordinates into lens distorted image coordinates within about 0.5 pixel. The proposed semi-automatic matching scheme incorporated with lens distorted epipolar line was implemented with scene images captured by 4S-Van in moving. The experimental results showed that the precision of 3D positioning from 4S-Van images in photograrmmetric perspective is within 2cm in the range of 20m from the camera.

  • A service robot can identify its own position relative to landmarks, the locations of which are known in advance. The main contribution of this research is that it gives various ways of making the self-localizing error smaller by referring to special landmarks which are developed as high gain reflection material and coded array associations. In this paper, the authors propose a set of indices to evaluate the accuracy of self-localizing methods using the selective reflection landmark and infrared projector, and the indices are derived from the sensitivity enhancement using 3D distortion calibration of camera. And then, the accurarcy of self-localizing a mobile robot with landmarks based on the indices is evaluated, and a rational way to minimize to reduce the computational cost of selecting the best self-localizing method. The simulation results show a high accuracy and a good performance.

  • In this study, the design of 4S-Van system is discussed fur the implementation of laser mapping system. Laser device is fast and accurate sensor that acquires 3D road and surface data. The orientation laser sensor is determined by loosely coupled (D)GPS/INS Integration. Considering current system architecture, (D)GPS/INS integration is performed far performance analysis of direct georeferencing and self-calibration is performed for interior and exterior orientation and displacement. We utilized 3 laser sensors for compensation and performance improvement. 3D surface data from laser scanner and texture image from CCD camera can be used to implement 3D visualization.

  • The development of still video CCD cameras has simplified dramatically the digital imaging process. Still video cameras have flexibility that allows digital image acquisition and on-board image storage without being connected to a computer. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the performance of digital close-range photogrammetric system using the still video camera for dimensional inspection and structural monitoring being required in various industries. Some sub-pixel measurement techniques, which is indispensable for digital image measurement, were suggested. The author carried out the self-calibration of a high resolution DCS420 still video camera and then test application of a structure. The self-calibrating bundle adjustments resulted in object space accuracies which exceed 1 :46,000. It is ascertained that this digital close-range photogrammetric system has high accuracy potential and task effectiveness for industrial applications.

  • Recently, UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) or drones have gained popularity for the engineering surveying and mapping because they enable the rapid data acquisition and processing as well as their operation cost is low. The applicable fields become much wider including the topographic monitoring, agriculture, and forestry. It is reported that the high geospatial accuracy is achievable with the drone photogrammetry for many applications. However most studies reported the best achievable mapping results using well-distributed ground control points though some studies investigated the impact of control points on the accuracy. In this study, we focused on the drone mapping of corridors such as roads and pipelines. The distribution and the number of control points along the corridor were diversified for the accuracy assessment. In addition, the effects of the camera self-calibration and the number of the image strips were also studied. The experimental results showed that the biased distribution of ground control points has more negative impact on the accuracy compared to the density of points. The prior camera calibration was favored than the on-the-fly self-calibration that may produce poor positional accuracy for the case of less or biased control points. In addition, increasing the number of strips along the corridor was not helpful to increase the positional accuracy.

  • Photogrammetric mapping procedures have gone through major developments due to significant improvements in its underlying technologies. The availability of GPS/INS systems greatly assist in direct geo-referencing of the acquired imagery. Still, photogrammetric datasets taken without the aid of positioning and navigation systems need control information for the purpose of surface reconstruction. Point features were, and still are, the primary source of control for the photogrammetric triangulation although other higher-order features are available and can be used. LIDAR systems supply dense geometric surface information in the form of three dimensional coordinates with respect to certain reference system. Considering the accuracy improvement of LIDAR systems in the recent years, LIDAR data is considered a viable supply of photogrammetric control. To exploit LIDAR data, new challenges are poised concerning the representation and reference system by which both the photogrammetric and LIDAR datasets are described. In this paper, registration methodologies will be devised for the purpose of integrating the LIDAR data into the photogrammetric triangulation. Such registration methodologies have to deal with three issues: registration primitives, transformation parameters, and similarity measures. Two methodologies will be introduced that utilize straight-line and areal features derived from both datasets as the registration primitives. The first methodology directly incorporates the LIDAR lines as control information in the photogrammetric triangulation, while in the second methodology, LIDAR patches are used to produce and align the photogrammetric model. Also, camera self-calibration experiments were conducted on simulated and real data to test the feasibility of using LIDAR patches for this purpose.

  • This paper describes an idea for determining self-localization using visual landmark. The critical geometric dimensions of a pentagon are used here to locate the relative position of the mobile robot with respect to the pattern. This method has the advantages of simplicity and flexibility. This pentagon is also provided nth a unique identification, using invariant features and colors that enable the system to find the absolute location of the patterns. This algorithm determines both the correspondence between observed landmarks and a stored sequence, computes the absolute location of the observer using those correspondences, and calculates relative position from a pentagon using its (ive vortices. The algorithm has been implemented and tested. In several trials it computes location accurate to within 5 centimeters in less than 0.3 second.

  • Image morphing to generate 2D transitions between images may be difficult even to express simple 3D transformations. In addition, previous view morphing method requires control points for postwarping, and is much affected by self- occlusion. This paper presents a new morphing algorithm that can generate automatically in-between scenes from un-calibrated images. Our algorithm rectifies input images based on the fundamental matrix, which is followed by linear interpolation with bilinear disparity map. In final, we generate in-between views by inverse mapping of homography between the rectified images. The proposed method nay be applied to photographs and drawings, because neither knowledge of 3D shape nor camera calibration, which is complex process generally, is required. The generated in-between views can be used in various application areas such as simulation system of virtual environment and image communication.
